University Drug Culture

Holy shit. I guess this is what you resort to when you live in a place with shitty weed.

I don’t know what degree requires 4-8 hrs of classes a week, sounds pretty pathetic… With classes and labs I spent between 24 - 36 hrs a week sitting behind a desk or in a lab during my undergrad, 5-6 classes a term at 3 hrs lecture each + 3 hrs lab or tutorial each for many of the classes, this is pretty typical for science and engineering here, top in course work and there isn’t much time to be high all the time. Most students I know like to drink a fair bit but I haven’t seen to many drugs, I know more people from high school who are regular drug users.
4-8 hours is likely denoting hours attended, not scheduled. It’s pretty clear from the article that the kids depicted are not the ones primarily interested in their classroom education.

I knew some super seniors who were taking hours as few as that. however, they knew from the start they weren’t going to wake up until after 12pm so it made sense.

I wonder if those people are still in college.

Part of it is due to the government’s drive to increase the number of people attending university for no other reason than to just INCREASE them. Many students reach the end of school, then just go through the motions - when they’d probably be better off starting out in employment.

Unless you go for one of the golden handcuff/gilded cage jobs which you have to sell your soul for - law, accountancy, banking - starting salaries are pretty much the same across the board whether you’re a graduate or not. And salaries for male arts/humanities graduates are actually LOWER on average.

Universities were never set up with the idea of degrees being tickets to economic life; they were - and the good ones still are - about learning.

I can’t wait for this…thank goodness for the year you have to take off as a transfer. Although, being a 23-year-old senior on the baseball team should be interesting. Especially when you consider I’m four months older than Justin Upton. What am I doing with my life…

Also, as long as the universities are making money and graduating a decent amount of students, they don’t care about these kids. Get that money.

Gotta disagree on teachers too…in California, teachers get paid based on how many graduate units you took in college. The more units of grad school, the more pay you get.

Haha, same with me - now I’m 22 with kids and a mortgage whilst other people my age are still smoking weed…

Yea you’re acting way too old. I’ll take my 23 years of age with some single freedom and a box of doobies, please. =)

It’s virtually impossible to physically overdose on Acid.

And the flashbacks people talk about are mostly a form of post-traumatic stress disorder.

I’d have to kill people to find acid around here…

Drinking and pot dominate at LSU.

If you’re a fucking idiot you’re going to get yourself into trouble with drugs, legal or not.

HAHAHAH - The kids these days - call that shit ecstasy? In my day MDMA was real MDMA!

Some years ago having been invited to a student ball I discovered some kids getting wasted on acid. Having not done any for several years I decided to join in.

Disappointing strength is all I can say.
That’s my experience. I actually took MDMA back in the early 80s when it was still legal. It was pharmaceutical grade and it really did what it was supposed to do…give you a love buzz. I took some again (street-bought) about 8 years ago. Very weak except for a speed buzz that I didn’t like.

That’s why I don’t do chemicals anymore. Can’t trust them. I do psilocybin mushrooms. Nature is usually a very trustworthy chemist! I have also done Ayahuasca and am looking forward to doing Iboga. I don’t do these often. About once a year.

My friend has a quote -

“If it ain’t from the ground, it ain’t coming round…”

I pretty much stick to marijuana here at college, mainly becasue I cxan’t find anything harder. Though, I do have a friend who’s got some acid, so perhaps I’ll try something new. But marijuana is a good drug to chill out to with mates, as long as its not ‘bush’.

LSD, as far as we know, is safe, if you do it properly (in a safe, secure place). Of course because it is Schedule 5, even doing research on it is difficult if not impossible, so it is true that we don’t know a lot. Of course people who are unbalanced emotionally or have a history of schizophrenia should not take it. If you want to look at sincere scienitific research being done on psychedelics, visit www.maps.org

However, people should know before taking it that it is an amplifier. If you want a recreational drug that will help you escape reality, drink alcohol. If you have a problem on your mind when you take LSD it will usually amplify the problem and you will not be able to escape it. Hence, the so-called “bad trip”. On the other hand, it can also lead to breakthroughs…for the most famous, see Aldous Huxley or Apple founder Steve Jobs (who said taking LSD was one of the top three things he had done in his life), Kary Mullis (winner of 1993 Noble Prize in Chemistry) and many, many others.

I have been around people who have taken lots of acid over the years and have yet to meet one who has had a “flash back” (maybe they exist, but you would think that living in San Francisco I would at least have come across one).

Similar to what Ghost says, if you give any kind of drug to the wrong person, it will screw them up, but LSD is no larger a culprit than the valiums that MDs prescribe.

I no longer wonder why Entheogens is the way he is.
GetSwole wrote:

Please expand.

At least entheogens knows what he’s talking about instead of having a bad case of diarrhea of the mouth.

Expand on what?..

I admittedly was just going by what I heard about LSD, but since the other posts you’ll notice I didn’t argue because obviously they knew far more than me.

Drug use in the U.S. has been declining, sorry I didn’t clarify that I was speaking about the United States.

Don’t get all bitchy, I’m not in here to bash drugs jesus, I could care less who uses what…everyone is so quick to get defensive. I don’t understand how what I said was diarrhea of the mouth, and I wasn’t putting Ethenogeans down I was just having fun. Whine much, fuck.

There is the drug scene here at school, but it’s pretty self-segregated, the only two things that are nearly universal are weed and booze. And I don’t smoke.

But I will say, judging by my travels, a few but admittedly small sample, and the foreign kids that come here to go to school all say the same thing. NO one else drinks as ridiculously out of control as American college students, and trust me I’m NOT bragging. Sometimes you don’t realize it until you go somewhere where there’s a “stereotypically” heavy drinking culture and it looks about 1/100th as intense as any given Saturday on any given campus with a major football team.

Like I said, not bragging, it’s actually pretty sad.
