University Drug Culture

Interesting article. Slightly extreme, but some truth in it to judge from my experience at uni. What’s it like in America?

This author obviously didn’t go to college in the seventies. This was just an average weeknight in the dorms back then. And that girl who passed out in the bathroom with the cocaine next to her? I would have snorted it all, before I helped her, or called 911.

But that was then. Just plenty of weed and beer seems to be the norm, now. This article seems way over the top to me, blaming drug use on boredom. Most people start taking drugs because it’s fun, and they like the way it makes them feel.

It’s just the same with drinking. Some will get sick. Some will develop an addiction. Some will die. Some will live to tell the story. It’s been happenning for hundreds of years.

i think most people go through a drug phase it just depends when they hit it. for most its in college when they get some freedom living in a dorm since theyre now unsupervised and have all this freedom all of a sudden. ecstacy, coke, weed, alcohol those are all pretty common since theyre more party drugs but some get more extreme into it and start doing oxycodone and heroin.

for me, i got all that drug shit out of my system at around 17. we used to all go to a friend of mine’s house and just get absolutely shitfaced and fucked up every single day. a lot of cheap vodka, pills, and weed. personally i would either get shitfaced out of my mind or take some Klonopins or Xanax and then snort Codeine pills and since Klonopins give you a “bean over” and codiene seems to have similar effects id be fucked for the first day then id just feel “nice” the next couple. im not sure how people do this at Universities though, it seems like theres way too much schoolwork involved to fall behind in. although me and my friends dropped out of high-school at that point…or wed do it in the summer. every day then was a fuckin party, 10-20 people at a house all hours of day and night, people just randomly coming in and out…shit was nuts, crazier than any party ive been to recently and we were 15-18 then.

Ha,ha, good post. Many youth look for their highs from substances. When you get older, if you’ve learned and grown, you look for your highs from things of substance. Mine are lifting and the outdoors now.

D

I don’t know what degree requires 4-8 hrs of classes a week, sounds pretty pathetic… With classes and labs I spent between 24 - 36 hrs a week sitting behind a desk or in a lab during my undergrad, 5-6 classes a term at 3 hrs lecture each + 3 hrs lab or tutorial each for many of the classes, this is pretty typical for science and engineering here, top in course work and there isn’t much time to be high all the time. Most students I know like to drink a fair bit but I haven’t seen to many drugs, I know more people from high school who are regular drug users.

Haha, same with me - now I’m 22 with kids and a mortgage whilst other people my age are still smoking weed…

During my undergrad (early 90s) most students took 16 to 21 hours, so 5 to 7 classes with a lab or two. Most of my undergraduate students now freak now freak out over four courses, many just taking three. Which would explain how five to six years for graduation has become the norm.

You’re making me nostalgic.

My favorite part.

Look at the links beside the story.

Maybe this will be clearer.

Ha!

Ok, that’s not funny but I can’t stop laughing.

im currently at uni, i am surprised by the amount of pills that are used by my peers. I dont have a problem with weed as there has never been a reported case of someone overdosing on it. weed is pretty rampant you can walk past the dorms and smell it…but i agree with one of the things said in this article, pretty much your peer pressured into taking pills too remain relevant…which is sad, a friend of mine one of her friends been fucking with pills and coke shes gone from the most attractive girl at my uni too completely dog faced

sorry about the long post

That’s what I was thinking!

I knew that one was coming! I wouldn’t change a thing though.

HAHAHAH - The kids these days - call that shit ecstasy? In my day MDMA was real MDMA!

Some years ago having been invited to a student ball I discovered some kids getting wasted on acid. Having not done any for several years I decided to join in.

Disappointing strength is all I can say.

Apparently kids do Cocaine in my HS bathrooms. Now it’s normal for me to hear stories how people took Xanax and went to a theme park or something.

Kids start smoking weed around 12 years old, and that’s the average.

Has this shit been going on forever? Or has our nation started to decline? That’s a serious question because I wasn’t around 20 years ago.

And it looks to me like the only safe drugs are weed and LSD, and let’s not forget Salvia

Look at statistics and you will see that drug use in teens and the population overall has drastically declined in the last 20-30 years.

and LSD is hardly safe boyo.

I can’t stand the thought of having kids someday because it’s inevitable that they will blaze teh chronic and maybe other things. And when they’re teens I can’t stand the thought of going out of town for even one night as I know they’ll turn my house into a fucking frat house.

For those who are parents, how the hell do you deal with this?
