Unequal Size, Strength, & Activiation

Sorry if I didn’t search the site enough but here is the issue. Due to an ankle surgery from years past and being right handed I am bigger, stronger and feel more activation on my right side (upper and lower body) during any particular lift.

I can visually and internally(?) notice that VMO and posterior adductors are not activated nearly how the right side is when doing single leg work. I try not to overcompensate when lifting heavy 2 footed but I don’t think its been that successful. Same thing with 2 handed pulls, pushes.

So how should I approach this: Do unilateral work until the cows some home (until that VMO and adductor complex gets in line) or what is the smart approach to balancing out the sides.

This is more important to me for athletic reasons than bodybuilding reasons, but I didn’t know where else to put this. Please let me know of any flaws in my line of thought. Thanks for your time.
