First of all, hello to everyone on T-Nation. For a couple years now Ive been reading a lot of articles but this is the first time Ive ever felt the need to post.
Ive been taking whey for years now and just recently my gf has said that I should not take it. Her theory is that I am unable to digest it and her reasons behind this are as follows. That I am allergic to milk and whey is a product that comes from milk. Because I fart more often and they smell worse, and have worse body odor are allegedly indications that I am unable to digest it. It is furthermore her belief that taking something that you are sensitive to will block the absorption of other things your eating at the same time.
So she had me switch to rice protein which appears to be pretty good according to the labels marketing pitch. Although it does taste like chocolate flavored chalk powered and is a lot more expensive.
I donâÂ?Â?t take very much in a day even. Only 15g before, 15g during, and 45g after a workout; and then probly every second day I have a single 2 scoop shake at some point. IâÂ?Â?m 21 yo, 200 pounds, and 6âÂ?Â?1âÂ?Â? with a body fat of about 12-14% and I’m taking ON and Dymatize whey - In case anyone was going to take this into consideration.
Anyways though, is it a good idea to continue taking whey or is she right that I’m not able to completely digest is and should find an alternative source?

Just look for whey without lactose in it.
Whey does not contain lactose. At least not in any significant amount. Lactose is simply a sugar found in milk and is mostly removed during the processing of whey. People who are intolerant to milk (full blown clinical allergic reactions to milk are rare) do not produce enough lactase to process lactose leading to all those nasty side effects of drinking milk. It does not, however, affect the absorption of the protein and fat, so no the OP does not have any problems digesting whey due to lactose intolerance. Also, unless you produce close to no lactase, the small amount of lactose in whey will not affect you. If you want to test to find out if it is the whey protein leading to these side effects simply go to GNC and buy some lactase and use as directed.

Thanks to any responses in advance.
Whey actually comes from cheese. There are some isolates that are almost lactose free, but I don’t know if there are any the are 100% free.
Pea protein and rice protein are better sources, they just don’t get as much love because of their taste and perceived “less manliness” factor.
I stopped using whey altogether, using whole foods, pea/rice protein instead, and have been completely satisfied with my results.
Unless you’re unable to digest all protein there’s no reason that the whey you consume wouldn’t be digested.
Most “allergies” people have to milk are simply lactose intolerance which mcook123 nailed.
Higher protein diets yield nasty farts sometimes, that’s the way it is, if your woman can’t handle it better to find out now before you put a rock on that finger.

Agreed. I am more amazed that this is a surprise.
To those unaware, if you can’t deal with any extra amount of gas at all, maybe you should give up on those goals of adding another 20lbs of muscle because that takes a shit ton of food.
Gas does NOT equal “food allergy”.
Lactose intolerance does not equal “food allergy”.
Find a protein powder that agrees with you and inform your girl that she can either deal with it or leave…OR, you can become like the other 90% of whipped guys in the country and give up on your goals because she doesn’t like the aroma.
I’d just like to say (with a certain amount of pride) that I’ve sent my wife out of the bedroom, never to return, multiple times this week with SBD aromas rich with the perfect blend of eggy, cheesey, and beany textures.
In fact, I even sent myself from the room once this past week.
If I drink milk my ass smells like a broken sewage line. I cannot drink most protein supplements, but after lots of experimentation (and many dutch ovens in my bed), I finally found one I can handle with zero side effects: Iso-Pure. And, as luck would have it, it costs twice as much as most others out there, but I pay the extra cash and I am no longer “that guy” in the gym who smells like he needs his diaper changed.

Have you tried chewing your shake?

The mouth only secretes amylase, which acts on carbohydrates.
Chewing protein for extra amounts of time is futile.

Dude…if you smell like ass in the gym, you have bigger issues than protein intake.
this is a funny thread
and gross, especially the my ass smells like a broken sewage line part lol
i don’t like to have more than 30 grams of whey per day or it seems to build up in my lower GI tract
i also need occasional breaks from it or the same happens
that’s what i love about ANACONDA, the cashydlys seems like water

I’ve been bulking since October and I fucking smell like ass all the god damn time. I hate it.
No pain, no gain.
Plus all the people that are vain IN the gym, are the ones that dont make any gains. I sweat, I grunt, I smell like “I need my diaper changed” and I leave a trail of drip marks in my wake. Who the fuck cares. /thread

I’m guessing you don’t get much poonanny, eh?
Everyone farts, but if you “smell like ass all the god damn time” and “leave a trail of drip marks,” it’s time to re-evaluate what you’re eating.
