Ultimate Frisbee Anyone??

I was just curious if we had any Ultimate players here on the boards. I have been playing recreationally since high school and started playing in a few of the leagues here in the DFW area this year.

Don’t be shy, I know yall are out there.

Edit: By the way, I will be playing at Texas Two Finger this weekend with a scrub pick up team. Gonna be allot of fun!

Look like a good laugh

I play, hence my screen name. I founded and ran the league in Lincoln, NE and have done some coaching but only play sparingly (pick up and leagues) these days. There usually isn’t much about Ultimate that I felt was worthy of discussion on T-Nation, but if there are more players here, I 'd enjoy a good talk.

Not sure about Frisbee, but dogs sure seem to be amazing at it.

Got a couple of buddies who play every Tuesday. Always thought it sounded kinda gay, but went out 2 or 3 weeks ago and had a blast. Several of the dudes out there were ex college football and lacrosse players, so it got pretty competitive. Playing the disk is COMPLETELY different than playing a ball. I was by far the fastest and highest jumping dude out there, but I was getting my ass kicked by dudes who know the game. I’ll definitely play again.

You’re killing me ID.

More like this:

Except the quality of play here is far greater than any I have ever seen first hand.

Yeah, the majority of people who play are relatively unathletic people who do local leagues and pickup (aka me). Then there are college clubs which are pretty competive and full of people who did track or played soccer/lacross/football in highschool. And then when those people graduate, they go and play in open clubs. Here in Dallas off the top of my head we have Plex (premier Mens club), Crude (average Mens club), and Boheca (coed club). Austin’s ultimate community is about the same size as ours despite its much lower population. It’s premier club, DoubleWide, is considered one of the best in the US.

Anyway, if you are already pretty athletic, and if you throw and play 3-4 times a week, you can master the basics and be competitive with those people you were playing with. They can beat you out now due to their disc throwing and reading skills, and understanding of the game.

How old do you think the average player was at the pick up group? It usually hovers around 35 for the groups I attend.

^ A few of those dudes played football/lacrosse in college, not high school. I can 360 dunk a basketball and run a sub 4.6 40 at 5’9 and 30 years old, so I’d say I’m pretty athletic. I can’t throw that disk to save my life though. I’d say the ages ranged from late 20’s through mid 30’s. There were actually a few elements of the game that reminded me of basketball. When everybody started clicking and the game sped up it was incredibly fluid. I was more of a distraction than anything, but it was still a blast.

That is an exceptionally young and athletic pickup group… I cant do any of those things and I am a 6’1" 22 year old.

You would be amazed at how quickly you can get your throws down with 30 mins of throwing 3-4 times a week.

It’s prob a ruse. He covers himself with chalk so he can catch his opponents off guard.

But seriously, around here there are VERY few black players. This winter league, out of maybe 400 registered participants, I believe only 8 or so were black. So whenever we see one, we always put our token athletic black player on their token athletic black player, if we are lucky enough to have one.

I’m sure it’s like anything else, and repetition helps, but I’m pretty bad haha. If I try and launch it it just kinda boomerangs and slows the game down.

Be sure to dump it, and work on your throws on the sidelines.

It’s a great game, and the people it attracts are usually pretty great.

If I ever have to move for work, the first thing I’ll do is look up local pick ups to meet people.

That looks pretty intense!

I remember playing frisbee as drinking a couple of brews on the beach and tossing the disk back and forth. This is a whole new ball game, and reading the flight (if you’re an end) must take years to develope.
