UFC 81

I know everybody loves to hate on Herb Dean, but Mazegatti is the one that I think fucks up the most. I thought it was a poor decision on the standup, especially because Mir was moving his head around resulting in Lesnar hitting the back of his head. I don’t think it changed the outcome of the fight though…I also like how Stevey waited forever to break it up once lesnar was tapping, the old Mir would’ve busted Brock’s leg off with that extra time cause he used to crank those subs.

Does anybody know if Marty Morgan (assistant UofM coach) walked out with Brock?
I wasn’t paying attention at who was in his corner, but Morgan is definitely working with him. He was all over the place in the All Access episode featuring Lesnar.

My Predictions:

 • Nog via sub round 3
 • Mir via TKO round 2
 • Griffin via TKO round 2
 • Lytle via KO round 2
 • Eastman by KO round 2
 • Heath gets knocked out
 • Nakamura via sub round 2
 • Almeida sub round 1
 • Marquadt via UD
Mazagatti fucked that up pretty bad.

Yes and no.

We rewound it to see the hits to the back of the head and there were four. He should have stepped in after the first two and gave a warning. I don’t see why he took a point immediately without any warning.

I thought it was a bad call at first. Then when i saw the replay I agreed with it. I just watched it again and I definitely agree with it. Lesnar smacks him on the back of the head with a big hammer fist and the ref shouts “Watch the back of the head!”

He then hits him 3 more times. I don’t care if Mir was moving his head. It’s called being crafty. Lesnar was over excited and Mir was smart. It was a legit stand up because Mir got stunned by the ilegal blows and was in a bad spot.

hahahahahahahaha

Beautiful. I heart Nog 4ever.

This was a straight up thug style ass whipping.

I’m trying to get one of Almeida’s badss guillotine. Mir got the bonus, but I thought that was the best sub of the night. Also awesome to see Martin Rooney in his corner and Big Dog repping the Parisi Speed School gear.

Ok, for the uminformed can someone tell me why this was a title bout? I thought Couture was the HW champ. Did he beat Sylvia and retire again?
No, he beat sylvia, defended his title in a beatdown of Gonzaga in August and quit the ufc - both fighting and commentating - because a) they wouldnt sign fedor and b) werent paying randy the money he deserved/they were to other, lesser fighters. This was “interim” because dana is still proceeding along the intellectually dishonest course that this is all temporary and jsut needs to be worked out and randy will be back soon

My next post was going to say:

Donut, do you have the Almeida gif?

Big Dog can definetely make some noise in the MW division.

I don’t understand the hate for Herb Dean. He is one of the best refs in MMA today IMO.

I second everything everyone has said about Nog times 10. And Tim summed it up pretty well: He was getting pounded on for most of the fight, finally got him to the ground and submitted him like magic. Nog’s got mad heart.

I kept watching Tim tag him during the standup though and just kept saying “Put your hands up, Nog! Protect yourself, Jeezus!” He really does almost seem to block shots with his head! I was cheering REAL loud when he locked that choke in on Tim.

On a semi-related note, doesn’t the UFC/Dana look a little weak in a sense now, since their currenty HW champ (not to take anything away from Nog – he’s a stud) got completely dominated – 3 times! – by someone who is . . . not in the UFC? (Cough Fedor cough)!!

Not as bad as they would look with a champion who just got dominated by Randy Couture, who is no longer in the UFC. I’d wager way more people know of Randy’s ass beating on Tim than Fedor’s on Nog. And really, you can’t count their second fight because it was a NC, and their third fight Fedor clearly won but it was a much closer performance, and we even saw Fedor gas at the end.

As someone who primarily trains in BJJ, last night was so great to watch. Several great submissions. Mir did what I thought he would to Lesnar; survive his onslaught and catch him in an awkward position and lock on a sub. I didn’t like the point deduction, though, as Mir was turning his head as Lesnar was punching. Brock has potential; all he needs is to keep improving is his BJJ defense. Yeah it was only a minute, but Lesnar showed he’s the real deal.

Noguiera is indistructable. Seriously, how does this guy still have any gas in his tank? Sylvia had him out, yet he comes back and puts on an absolute BJJ clinic in the 3rd round. That sweep was awesome, and the setup to the guillotine was crazy fast. Syliva looked the best he has in a while, even in the loss.

Donut, thanks for posting that other sick guillotine. Marquardt also had a good choke out of Horn, who made the age-old mistake of leaving his neck exposed. Surprising it happened to “Gumby” who has over 100 pro fights.

I’m so pissed Lesnar lost. That strike to the head was bullshit. Frank Mir is one of the very few fighters in the UFC that I completely loath. Hopefully Lesnar will improve his technique and come back better. He has got lots of potential.

I watched it a bit drunk last night and was initially upset about the Lesnar stand up, but I’ve looked at it again probably a dozen times and I now support it. Lesnar first hit Mir a few times, was warned, and then hit Mir again a few more times when Mir was turning. And some of those strikes weren’t even back of the head, they were strikes to the neck. That’s dangerous.

And even if the stand up was wrong (and I still think taking the point away was overkill, but the stand up was fine), Lesnar just took him down again anyway, so the point is moot, and Mir wasn’t close to being knocked out the first time anyway, at least not to any legitimate punches. In the end, Lesnar simply lost because his submission defense hasn’t developed yet. It was a bad matchup for Lesnar and he did a great job, considering who he was up against. I hope to see him face Sylvia sometime.

Nog should retire. He looks about 15 years older than his biological age. Muhammad Ali was also known for a ridiculous chin and come from behind victories. Look at what happened to him. I’d say Tim wins that fight 7/10 times, and 2/10 times Nog wins while taking a severe beating, which is what happened last night. Nog should quit while he’s still a legend instead of turning into a Ken Shamrock.

The other fights were good stuff. I’d give this UFC an 8/10, definitely well above average, which is saying something considering that a pro wrestler was fighting.

Man…that was an awesome night for Jiu Jitsu…Heath got tossed like a used condom…that was crazy.
Higher Game wrote:

I think Nog still has a little bit of gas in the tank.

However, when he does decline, it is going to be very fast and very ugly. His ability to take a beating is going to eventually fade, and when it does he is going to be on the receiving end of some brutal knockouts. He’s not going to be able shrug off the copious amounts of abuse that he takes in nearly every fight forever.

It’s never pretty watching the decline of fighter who relied on durability & heart.

That toss was ridiculous. No idea where all that momentum came from.

Unbelievable also was how Nog recovered from the beating he was taking initially. I thought they were going to stop the fight in the first round. I def agree that he should retire for exactly the reasons that have just been mentioned. He can always coach and do some BJJ competitions which I would’ve thought aren’t quite as tough.
