the link was in the last ufc 77 thread but it just took you too a site with an embedded player. downloaded the player from cnet just to be sure and then tuned into the mma tv channel. bam. the resolution pretty much sucked but whatever. i literally fell asleep during vera v sylvia, thank god I woke up in time to see franklin visit the dr. to get surgically removed from the octagon.

But yeah, in other news, Anderson Silva is my messiah. I have never seen such a pimptacular beatdown in my entire life. His dance, spinning backfist to flying knee, knocking him out twice, it gave me a boner. Even the Rich Franklin shirt wearing girls in front of us were wet with the glory of that ass kicking. I’m with ya. If it was physically possible, I would have his children.

He is the PERFECT champion. From the way he fights to his mental strength to how he conducts himself. Flawless.

This was one of the most predictable UFC cards ever. Sylvia/Vera turned out exactly how I thought it would: big Tim using his size and strength and boringness to beat the overhyped Vera. And of course, Anderson Silva destroyed Rich Franklin, again. At least it is gold compared to how the next one is going to be.

79 will be love/hate, since Serra/Hughes is going to be a 5 round ground war, an acquired taste. I think we’ll be in the 80’s before we get to another truly spectacular event, like Knockout was.

Afraid not. Though I dreamt about choking out the fuckwad standing next to me who chanted USA! USA! in every fight, including the MacDonald vs Okami fight. Explain that one to me. He also was excited about the possibility of Brock Lesnar vs Wanderlei Silva. I hate people.

Haha. That’s hilarious. You had to know you would have some goon next to you, though.

All I can say is holy shit. A complete and total dismantling. Silva looks unstoppable.

Anderson Silva is a sexy sexy man. That was scary. I’m happy that Franklin got a few flurries in for the crowd, but the outcome was never in doubt really. The commentators actually got something right…every fight with Silva you get this sense that it’s only a matter of time before he gets you. And boy did he get Rich. His clinch is ridiculous, and his striking efficiency is sickening.

On another note, very classy, and I’m now an even bigger fan than I was before. Still hurts to see Franklin go down that way twice though, I’ve liked him a lot for a quite a while.

Yeah, even Silva seemed sorry to see Rich go down like that. He kept apologizing after the fight to Franklin for having to kick his ass.

Watching the outcome of this fight brings up another interesting question. Where does Franklin go from here? It’s pretty obvious that he’s just not going to beat Silva, Silva is in a different league. So where does Rich go? Does he try to cut down to 175 (doubtful he could make that cut)? Does he try to bulk up to light heavyweight (personally think that the upper level LHW guys would eat him for breakfast)? Or what?

Unless Silva somehow gets into contract arguments, or loses the belt via either some lucky Ko/submission, or Hendo decides to drop down to middleweight, Rich is pretty much destined to be a middle of the road fighter for the rest of his career. That’s a tough pill to swallow.

Rich is still a top 5 middleweight and he is a recognizable face. The money will be fine, much better than teaching, even if he never becomes champion again. Besides, sometimes a guy just has your number, and Rich might have a chance at championship if someone, probably a world class wrestler, beats Silva. I’m hoping Lindland comes back, but I’m not holding my breath.

I think Rich is primed for endurance and strength, but his fast twitch muscles are underdeveloped. He just doesn’t have the kind of speed and power needed to stand with Silva, and he lacks the wrestling ability to ground him. If you look really carefully, Silva hurts Franklin with one of his upkicks sometime in the middle of the first round, something that wouldn’t have happened to a better wrestler. Franklin is well rounded but he has no particular specialty to fall back on, which really hurts him.

I suspect Silva’s weakness is wrestling + ground and pound and traditional Western (non Muay Thai) kickboxing, since Rich did land a few good leg kicks on him. Silva’s strengths are jiu-jitsu and clench fighting. But he is overall just a very balanced, intelligent fighter.

Very true. Now that Randy and Chuck are gone from the title scene for the time being, Anderson could very well become the “peoples champion”. He is incredibly classy, friendly gentleman who truly cares and respects everyone that he faces.

Is it just me, or did there seem to be a bit of a bias in the commentating?

Any thoughts on the Brock Lesnar signing? Who should he fight first?

Orlovski? Kongo? Cro Cop?

What did everyone think about Sylvia’s post fight comments about Kongo?

For one thing, he kept calling him “Chech.” (?)

Other than that, I assume he called out Kongo because Kongo would be a pretty easy win for him. Kongo has never been terribly impressive overall, and has beaten no one of substance. (Beating a CroCop who was fighting at 20% of his potential doesn’t mean much).

So yeah, Sylvia could probably use his size and weight and pretty easily employ the same SnP (stand n’ pray) tactic that worked for him against Vera with Kongo.

I disagree whole heartedly, and feel that Kongo’s size and stand up skills make him the worst heavyweight match up for Tim. Nog would struggle to get him down, Arlovski’s been beaten twice by him now, and Randy is gone.

I highly doubt that Kongo would be a easy win for Sylvia. Kongo will do to Sylvia what Vera could have done if he was 6’4" and 230-240 solid…not flabby…pounds. Kongo has the stand up skills and range along with clinch skills and strength to give Tim problems.

Maybe if he takes Kongo down…but it remains to be seen if Timmy will shoot for takedowns and grapple…especially if he’s still having issues with back surgery at time of fight. Is it me or does Sylvia not feel comfortable grappling?? Interesting matchup though…but we all know that doesn’t make for good fights. Personally, I would rather see Sylvia vs. Gonzaga.

Perhaps you’re right, but I’m getting to the point where I’d just rather not see Sylvia fight people, period. His fights tend to be rather boring, at least as of late.

If he did fight Gonzaga, though, my money would be on Gonzaga.

I’m surprised that you say you’re only now getting to that point. I’ve refused to buy a card featuring tim sylvia ever since that 5 round snoozefest of a boxing match he had with arlovski in july of 06. I couldnt find anyone around sat night, and I hate going out by myself. I knew franklin was fighting silva and decided to check the other matches to see if it was worht buying. as soon as i saw sylvia was fighting i said screw this

I didn’t get to see the show on Sat. as I had to work, but was able to watch most of the fights thanks to the links in the thread.

Man, Silva is a beast! He completely dominated Franklin, who looked shell-shocked after about the 3-min. mark of the opening round. I thought Franklin started off well, but after Silva shook off the takedown and started to lock in the Thai clinch, you could see Franklin’s body language change. He was saved by the bell in the first and it was only a matter of time from that point.

Silva is so friggin’ accurate with his strikes. It’s a lot of fun to watch. I have no idea who will challenge him next. It likely doesn’t matter as he’s set up for a long title run.

I know Randy will get votes because he’s Randy (don’t get me wrong, what he did this year is incredible), but for my money, Silva is the Fighter of the Year.

I would’ve liked to have seen a better effort from Vera. Sylvia is such a pile of crap. He does just enough to eke out a decision. When’s the last time he looked to finish someone? I wonder if Vera would’ve been more aggressive had he not broken his hand?

I’m right with you on that one. He’s kind of been swept out of thought as of late, but I think he’s the best HW in the UFC. Out of everyone there, I think Randy was the only one with the right tools to handle his combination of size, grappling prowess, and striking power.

I was thinking about this too and also agree. That’s a powerful guy and I think he would hurt Silvia standing up and do well on the ground.
