This fight seemed dodgy. I looked at it in super slow motion. Silva didn’t land anything flush. In fact I only saw 2 punches that partially hit. Some were waaaay off even though Sonnen reacted to them. Sonnen was acting as if he was getting hurt badly yet NOTHING WAS HITTING. I call shenanigans!
…and what was up with Silva rubbing Vaseline all over his shoulders and chest?
I’d call your eye doctor instead…lol.
They played it in slow motion at my bar. Everyone in my group was outraged.

LOL…did the play the spinning backfist-to-atomic butt drop in slo-mo???
The broadcast did. He just spun and lost his balance yet he acted as if it was a big deal - i.e. didn’t get up right away.
He fucked up with that sloppy crap.
Sure, that spin was a “fuck up”, but a) he didn’t bounce back up - acted like he got hit or something, b) he acted waaay too hurt by the subsequent knee that didn’t hit anything, c) he curled up TWICE after NOTHING HIT HIM.
In earnest:
I agree with Big_Boss.
Half(but kinda wish I was all the way) kidding:
Aikido/Aikijutsu/internal martial arts do have certain “techniques”/“throws” where the nage/thrower is supposed to lead/control their opponent without touching them. It is supposed to be very, VERY fucking confusing to fall for it. Silva has trained with Seagal, who I think believes in that stuff.

Watching this fight makes me thing there’s something to that. When people fight Silva there seems to be a cloud of confusion that engulfs his opponents.
Watch the series of events that led to the fight beings stopped. 1 barely glancing blow and Sonnen goes down like a sack of potatoes, and watch every subsequent punch, Silva is not even close to hitting with any of them except one that hit the top of the forehead. Yet Sonnen was acting seriously hurt. Even though nothing was hitting and Sonnen was blocking properly, the fight was stopped.
BS.
What a fight. I thought Chael was doing very well on the ground, definitely sharpened his top game up from the last fight two years ago. Had a bit more trouble in the 2nd, but was definitely winning. Like humble said though, Silva is a fucking artist.
It’s a weird dynamic those two have with each other. Chael has Silva’s number in the sense that he’s a horrible matchup for him. Anderson, on the flipside, is too sharp and hits too hard.
Anyway, I was impressed all round. Would have liked it to continue a little longer, but that was some good MMA. Technical, aggressive grappling and striking, and a come out of nowhere finish.
I’m still confused as to what led to Chael turtling. I guessed it was the knee to the sternum, but that spinning back fist looked so off that I have a feeling Chael got tagged right before. Will rewatch.

The BS is leaning in the other direction,my friend. You ever been kneed in the sternum/solar plexus?? Ever had wind knocked out of you??? Did it give you instant energy to fight it off…or were you wishing to die instantly rather than be tortured by the pain and not being able to breath??
Big_Boss wrote:
Hmm…well the backfist might have been a little sloppy…but the setup wasn’t that bad. Silva just has crazy awareness. Watch the slip off the jab. He made Sonnen look almost as bad as Forrest.
Ah, looks like Silva tripped him, or at least contributed to him falling on his ass. He seems to be on his way down, hitting Anderson’s left leg sealed the deal.

Must of been the ninja black egg. LOL…come on dude…that knee did some damage. You don’t shake off a knee to the sternum in a matter of seconds…TRUST ME…lol. He was covering up because of the knee.
Yep, it landed flush, between Sonnen’s forearms IIRC.

I’ve gotten hit in the solar plexus. Sonnen got up after that. Seemed in worse shape but was up. Didn’t go for a takedown or anything and falls from a non-hit, then tko’d by a lot of other non-hits.

No. Don’t agree. There is nothing to it.
I am perfectly content explaining things in terms of physics/physiology. If I find out I should have been meditating under a tree and learning to control my Ki/Chi all these years instead of collecting injuries I am going to be one pissed off little cowboy.
Finding out that I just need to eat more and slap around Kelly LeBrock to be able to mind throw people, may just give me a case of terminal cognitive dissonance.

That’s part of the mystery. Why did Sonnen lay on the ground? After losing his balance, as it happened to others tonight, a fighter springs back up. He laid there waiting to be hit. Silva came slowly. If I’m ready to take a hit and I see it coming, it’s harder for it to disable me. Sonnen didn’t grab the leg and reverse. Weird.

The only other explanation is that money exchanged hands tonight. Silva is very rich, you know.

Yup. I think the knee crushed him. He could still move, but not with any real effect, and body shots often have a kind of “delayed reaction”. Then we have to add the fact Silva aims EVERYTHING, so even the things that don’t look all that hard have plenty of effect.
I am going to say a prayer that Seagal doesn’t demo some kind of acupressure meridian on the chest though.
I’ve gotten nailed by a body punch before (not a knee, which would hurt a fuck load more). Had trouble standing. I doubt Chael had all his faculties about him after that. It was an odd way to end the fight, but whatever. Silva’s the man. P4P of this generation of fighters.

Yep. You don’t simply just spring back to your feet in front of a precision striker with KO power.

If I don’t see it coming at all, a hit to the body will disable me. If I’m ready for it, it is hard to get hit so hard that I get disabled. Sonnen is a veteran, was in top condition, saw it coming, and it hit at an odd angle. I don’t think that could’ve done it.
“Also, I suggest really watching the final 30 seconds of Silva/Sonnen a few times to see how beautiful everything Silva does is. The slickness to set up the punch that hurts Sonnen before the missed spinning backfist, the pinpoint knee to the body and then the violent and focused finish? That’s as good as it gets in this sport, so enjoy.”

From bloodyelbow… Jeez, Silva is a ninja.
I think you were looking at it through rose-colored glasses. Silva was missing/off with most/all of his strikes.

Doesn’t matter if you see it coming or not, a well placed(key) knee to sternum/solar plexus is a game changer. I smell BS…sorry bro…if you see it coming more likely than not…you’re just not going to let it land cleanly shrug

Did he miss the strikes that counted?? NOPE. “Rose colored glasses” yield more sight than sand.

Missed this post.
I thought it was illegal at first, but it looked fine on the replay to me as well.
