If I were Carwin I’d be embarrassed by that performance. A chance to take the belt from the guy who’s been running his mouth since he set foot in the UFC, and you gas out basically after your opening rush? That’s Tank Abbot 1994 level fight prep.
I’ll admit, I was surprised Brock took as much punishment as he did without going down. Didn’t think he had it in him.

We don’t really know how good Brock’s chin is
About that chin… think we got a decent idea now.
Yup, I’d say that his conditioning and the ref giving him the benefit of the doubt to continue fighting saved him more than his chin though. He was definitely rocked in the first, may have even gone out for a second or two, so I wouldn’t say he’s got a chin of granite or anything. But he definitely doesn’t have a glass jaw either.
Also, I’ve gotta give props where they are deserved. Clearly he has been working on and improving on his submissions. So kudos to him and his jiu jitsu coaches for that.
Another thing to consider is that Carwin clearly burned himself out trying to finish Brock in the first. It’s not necessarily that his conditioning sucked (although I would’ve expected it to be a little better from training at altitude), more so that he put all of his eggs (energy wise) into one basket and when it didn’t work out the way he expected he didn’t have really anything left. No one is going to truly be able to give 100% effort and then be able to immediately continue working at a high work rate. Had he had another round or so I bet he would have been able to recover, but Brock was smart to not let him do so.
The adrenaline of fighting for the real title against the someone who could actually match him physically could have also contributed to him gassing.
It was good to Lesner win. He went through alot with the illness and came back and beat a very good heavyweight. After watching the fight I think the biggest threat to Lesner will JDS. The stand up of Lesner needs to improve alot if he is gonna stand with someone of that quality. That fight would be fun to watch as you get Stand up vs Wrestling which is what got me into MMA to start.
As for the Fedor would kill them both people. I dont think you can say any top fighter would beat any other top fighter. Until they go in the cage you dont know. Who would of thought Fedor loses to Werdum in the first round? Anything can happen in a fight some people need to learn this.

Agreed…you have to wonder if his corner(Greg Jackson camp) failed him in not pushing for him to not do that. Carwin didn’t even try to establish any kind stable position control because he just “knew” he had Brock finished…definitely a huge mistake.
Carwin was completely done in 2nd round. No footwork/movement…hands completely down…etc. Definitely made Brock’s “takedown” very easy. I guess Brock inherited Mir’s horseshoe…lol.
But I do give Brock props for hanging in there…and using the basics of ground fighting…position/control first…then do whatever you want to do. This was a fight that humbled both guys…evident by Brock’s behavior afterward.
Shane Carwin’s post-fight response from another forum:
[i][b]He showed the heart of a Champion last night. Most men would fold under that kind of pressure.
I really appreciate all the support and messages. I am honored to have had the chance to fight for the belt and will be working my ass off to get another shot.
There are a lot of deserving fighters out there and now it is Cain’s turn to see what he can do. I will be back in the mix soon enough.
As for my health, I am good. My body began to seize up towards the end of the 1st and it was totally locked up in between rounds. I told my Coaches I could not move my legs. I have never felt like that before in my life. I had to answer the bell so I did what I could do and went out like any warrior would do and tried to fight through it.
Being a Champion is about living and fighting through adversity. Brock Lesnar has done jsut that, not only in coming back to submit me but throughout his medical struggles too. I hope I can earn another shot someday.
For me I am going to do a signing today and then head home to be with my family and spend a little quality time on the lakes in my Malibu Boat. It has been a long camp and a even longer set of camps waiting for this fight. I need a rest.
Thank you to my coaches, sponsors and manager for everything you have done and continue to do for me. You guys have made this a fun journey and one I would travel anytime.
My goal is to win the UFC Heavyweight Title, I want to be the best fighter on the planet. I will be working hard and doing everything I need to do to earn that title.
For now I will settle for loving father, husband and loyal friend…

SIDENOTE Did anyone see The Rock backstage congratulating Brock? Looks like he’s got his testicles back after finishing Disney movies…he was fucking huge.

Yeah, I’m sure Carwin was well-conditioned, he just smelled blood and wanted to go in for the kill. No HW could throw bombs for a minute like that and not tire out…had Brock not been so popular and a titleholder, I’m sure the ref would have stopped it
sardines12 wrote:
No Cain Vel¡zquez would not have gassed doing that.
Anyone will gas themselves out if they throw caution to the wind and go 100% all out for a minute straight, including Cain. True that Cain might be able to sustain a higher work rate for longer periods than Carwin was able to, but that’s not the same as going all out.
You’ve also gotta remember than Carwin’s greater mass/musculature requires greater amounts of energy to power than Cain’s lighter mass/musculature. But then Cain likely isn’t as powerful or strong as Carwin is. There’s always trade off when it comes to that stuff.

lesnar… well, i do give him props for preparing appropriately. carwin’s gas tank was just pitiful. that tap out of his has… damn… haunting?
if there is a god please do not allow a quick rematch.
I’m fairly sure that it’s a done deal that Cain is the #1 contender adn had the winner of this fight. Since that match wont happen before oct at earliest, more like Dec/jan, and then Dos Santos is teh likely challenger, you’re talking about somewhere in the neighborhood of a year before Carwin will have a shot - if he rebuilds himself in the interim by beating … who? Who do you put Carwin against now?
Fedor has put that kind of punishment on guys for multiple rounds at a time without gassing.
Watch his fights versus Noguiera.

Loser of JDS Roy Nelson should fight Shane.

This is all true, but still: what you described IS part of fighting endurance; if you cannot pace yourself, you’ve got a BIG, GAPING hole in your game. And you’re definitely not a champion.
Same with the adrenaline.
Fedor or Velasquez, with the right strategy, would absolutely smother such an opponent.

Not denying that one bit. Carwin was foolish to put not pace himself like that. But, to his credit, he’s been successful in finishing every other opponent he’s ever faced up to this point with that same strategy. Hopefully he’ll learn from this and pace himself better if/when they meet again.
