If I were her attorney, I’d plead that she was simply too stupid to understand the consequences of her actions, then shake out her pockets of all of the gum wrappers and other odd shiny objects that she picked out of ashtrays on the way to court that day as evidence of the validity of said plea.

Yeah. What I mean is like sure, she knew that stealing is bad. Stealing a laptop is a dick move, etc.
She probably didn’t quite grasp the concept that stealing that particular laptop carries with it like a dozen federal felonies. Like boom, your simple little life just ended, and now you’re in an irretrievable legal hellscape.

There may not be a next time! Federal time is often 100% fully served with service of the sentences being back to back, unlike state time where you get 2 days credited for each day served, concurrent sentencing, etc.
5 charges of 10 years means you’re literally gone from this world for 50 years.

Maybe l am looking past your comments as l feel exactly the same. My point was l am against wholesale nanny state that rewards people to lounge about on my tax dollar. Or taxing our future to give people making 150k/ yr a payment because? Or corporate welfare, energy and soybean farmers - lm looking at you.

I don’t disagree. How prevalent is the issue of folks taking advantage of social welfare to just lounge around? Are there official numbers on that? Do you know if they take into account mental health issues? Or addiction issues?
Are you asking how many white collar workers are in Fortune 500 companies getting corporate payments? 
Addiction is a sticky wicket for me, but refusing mental health care issues is morally bankrupt to me.

I know that the word “privilege” has been horribly misused by the woke cultists in the last several years, but I cannot think of a better word to describe some of the behavior I’ve seen on videos shot inside the Capitol.
One of them - apparently a white nationalist celebrity - was yelling “you’re not allowed to touch me” to the cops that were trying to get him and others removed from the building. And the worst part is that he seemed to really believe what he was saying.
Personally, I have a provisional theory - the concept of tipping is to blame.

I agree. But I also think that addiction is something that should be treated as well - the addict has to want to get help, just like the alcoholic has to finally say “I’m not ok”.
It brings up a whole host of hard questions but I don’t think most people who make a bad decision in their life want to ruin it. Addiction takes the person over, until they essentially become someone else. That’s got to be the definition of mental illness.

The numbers can be a bit tricky because we aren’t great at measuring stuff in that area. It’s like when Ted Cruz was mentioning during an Obama year (I forget the details) about the labor force participation being low. Which is weird because my grandma is 96 and would be counted as not working. And that senior in high school working on his grades and playing basketball? Also counted. In med school and studying instead of working? You guessed it. Counted. So if life expectancy increased and we had a million more people living to 100 one could make the misleading argument that the economy wasn’t incentivizing work because look at the labor force participation!
Which is why I said the number of people just sitting on their ass doing nothing but getting handouts is completely overstated. We don’t have great statistics that look into those things and tell a story. Where some may see a 30 year old not leaving the driveway at 8am everyday and that person is included in that and think he’s a bum perhaps he’s taking care of someone? I work with some kids who require all day care. If a loved one doesn’t work because they stay home with them are they lazy? Worthless? Welfare queens? “I was behind them and they were using their food stamps on steak”.
Well open fire, because there is a big part of tipping that I think is horribly wrong too.
