Trump: 2020 and Beyond

For over four years we have heard about TDS. The sufferers talked about Trump’s lack of integrity, class, intelligence, character, honesty, vanity, etc. They talked about his lack of a sense of responsibility and compassion. The called him a man-baby, buffoon, criminal, corrupt, racist, sexist, xenophobe.

On the GOP side, they tried to manage Trump. They didn’t see him as a threat because they believed they could use him to get what they want. They could take advantage of his political naivety and ego; his need for flattery (showing he never read The Prince). Now they are faced with the reality that Trump is not just some brash New Yorker, a reality tv star and clown. He really is a piece of trash and a genuine scumbag. Even now he can’t show any remorse or sadness for what happened. A police officer was murdered. A follower was so driven to defend him she was killed. But what does he do in this moment when people are wondering what the hell is going on with this country when they see people in Nazi shirts? People wearing horns. People walking around with zip ties. A gallows. Bombs were found. Trump blames the democrats. Trump says he did nothing wrong. He goes to the border to do what? Is this time to rekindle the whole Mexican rapists line? This was probably his last chance to demonstrate some semblance of humanity, dignity and maturity and instead he chooses to go out like an angry child. I can see why the GOP would like to move on and not have to face up to their role in all of this.

The crazy thing is that despite Trump showing his true colors, yet again, the faithful won’t abandon him.

This is a HUUUUUGE opportunity for the GOP to win back moderates, claim a bipartisan win supported by the large majority of the country and very vocally and clearly put country ahead of party… and rid their party of the utter stench of trump and his most loyal. They need to turn on that orange POS. And it sounds like that might be happening. They should have done this at countless points in time over the past 5 years, but if they do it now, THAT would help heal/bridge the gaping chasm existing in our country.

FBI is pursuing information about a person or people who helped to plant pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic headquarters last week.

D’Antuono said the bombs were real – and had timers.

“We don’t know exactly why they didn’t go off,” he added.

I would say insurrection is an absolutely appropriate term. And coup as well.

Lol. I would be supremely shocked if Trump has read anything longer than a newspaper article in the last 40 years let alone any classic literature.

Yes. I won’t trust them but at least if try finally turn the corner I’ll have hope we can heal the country.

I think they can risk losing the people in horns, nazi shirts, the proud boys and believers in QAnon. Those people need to be marginalized and not validated.

It was a violent attack on congress encouraged and supported by the ousted president in an attempt to maintain power, or at the least intimidate or punish those involved in supporting the democratic transfer of power.

  1. totally agree. They need to know there is no place at the table.
  2. I’m worried they make up a much larger block of voters than you think. And im also worried that they skew disproportionately military and LEO. Lets not forget that all living former Joint Chiefs of staff felt the NEED to pen an open letter telling the military they needed to follow the constitution and rule of law, not a single man and a conspiracy theory.

Neither.

Why? Because each one believes that they are holding the clean end of the turd.

Just ask them. They’ll tell you. Loudly.

Until the GOP cuts ties with the trump/Q contingent, they are holding the dirty end.

Once they go back to <2015 GOP, I would agree with you.

Dude, you’re a solution just looking for problems.

Way too damn sure that you’re right.

Nothing problematic happened in the last week?

Coup et al

Headline News (cnn) has had a graphic saying Capitol Invasion on any time l have clicked there this morning. But then shows bros smiling and taking selfies.

My conflict is when does a security apparatus (in this case, Capitol Police backed by Secret Service) actually shoot interlopers that have broken in, refused orders, have weapons? What if an an actual determined group had actually grabbed people rather than lecterns or sat in chairs for selfies?
Not sure if these have been addressed upthread.

Oh no. The past 12 months have been a wonderful demonstration of grace and dignity from both parties and all of their constituents.

Especially that thread that got deleted where in you tried to cancel a dude because he didn’t lock step in line over a word.

It’s fucking laughable how you seize every opportunity to loudly proclaim why “those” people need to be silenced or eliminated.

Its been addressed a bit. Scary, right?

On NPR this morning a reporter was saying how tight the security was around the capitol now, and how far out the secured perimeter extended (blocks). They were saying part of the issue is that the capitol building is a tourist attraction and is a public building, so security had traditionally been pretty darn lax- tourists milling around while congressional leaders walked through the rotunda a few steps away.

Right, bad people on both sides argument. Sweet. you stay classy over there.

And yeah, it was bullshit that poster was calling me a derogatory homophobic name (which is banned on this site) after i expressed how offensive i found it.

I really miss the days when we debated policy and outcomes. Nationally of course, but I mean even on this forum. I’d like to have them back.

These freaks and conspiracy theorists and the actions of the POTUS are taking attention away from topics of value and importance that could make life better for all of us in the country, even if we don’t agree on everything.

You have Totally reinvented that so that you can maintain your victim status, which is necessary to justify attacking everything you don’t like.

This is a problem for me. Earlier I said that one of the outcomes of this riot was going to be tightening of security and an even great chasm between the governing and the governed. One of the uniquely American aspects of our capital is the fact that you CAN be that close to the government physically. You can watch laws being made, you can walk close to Congresspeople.

Why? Because we believe government is by the people and for the people. That kind of thing doesn’t exist in most or maybe any other nation on earth.

Losing that is a PROBLEM. Because although the gap between law maker and citizen has been growing (mentally and actually) for the better part of a century at least, it’s a symbol of our convictions.

We do not need law makers farther from the people they govern even if they’re tourists. We need more of that, and this tragedy will ensure we have less of it by a mile in the name of “security”.

Now, make no mistake I think that heightened security is necessary in the short term with threats ongoing. But my concern is very real that similar to 9/11 the landscape will change permanently for the worse.

Yep. Right now it’s like we can’t work on simply math problems because there are people out there that have decided that 2 doesn’t equal 2 or the + sign doesn’t mean to add.

In order to work on higher level problems there has to be some agreement on some basic facts. Right now we have significant group of people in this country who are living in an alternate reality.

Some addressed up thread but kinda hard to keep tabs on. In any case these are important questions to think about.

CNN’s coverage has been deteriorating rapidly over the past couple months. Invasion is uncalled for. Consistent with my long-running theme on these boards that word choices have consequences and need to be considered, this is a problem. I’m in full agreement with @dt79 that the media is part of the problem.

I was reading a CNN article just a few minutes ago which was not labeled an opinion piece, and the presence of words that were not just sensationalist but emotive and opinion oriented was striking. Words like “lawless” - which was not applied to the mob but to the past 4 years - and “poetic justice” and “oppressive” etc.

This is bullshit. It was an opinion piece disguised as news. I don’t even disagree with the opinion expressed about Trump (shocker I know). I have no doubt that the person who wrote it thinks it was unbiased (no chance in hell) and factual (it was this) and is a news article and not an op-ed.

There were several other pieces prior to the capitol mob that I almost posted in the mainstream media" thread as examples of EXACTLY the type of thing that could take a moderate and start pushing them to find other alternative news sources.

It’s taking away from things that need to be talked about.
