Yep. None of these people get a pass just because they are horrified of the results they helped create. They tied themselves when they couldn’t even have a platform other than whatever he wants. None of these resigning Trump people talking about a peaceful transfer of power when they have spent the last two months opposing that every second.
You run a guy who wouldn’t commit to accepting the election results in 2016 and 2020. A guy who said the election would be fraudulent months before it happened because he knew things looked bleak. And you stand by him as he relentlessly attacks everything. You don’t get to pretend all of the sudden you’ve never been a part of it.
For those believing that the “system worked”, Trump had an excellent opportunity to do some serious damage, providing he didn’t care what would have happened to him personally.
For a 74 your old narcissist that could have been an enticing prospect - leaving his mark on history - it’s just that he was too lazy and cowardly to see it through.
It was amateur hour. Every aspiring dictator from the Sahel would have handled this easily. Here’s a basic primer:
Go out and address the crowd. Explain that a Dominion/Dem whistleblower just came forward and that they provided definite proof of election fraud and that’s why the Deep State is desperate to rush the process (it’s not being rushed but MAGAs don’t give a fuck). Explain that Pence is a good man but he’s being blackmailed by HRC and Pizzagate rapists. Call on “the patriots” to enter the Capitol, thwart the charade of a certification process and save America. Order the cops to stand down (details of the chain-of-command be damned) because the only thing you want is a ten day period to “audit the results”. This vague claim sounds perfectly sensible is GOP echo chamber, meaning that the GOPers would drag their feet on the 25th, at least for some time.
After the Capitol has been stormed, you can double-down add that the Dems and RINOs are planning to suspend the 2A as of right now and call upon “loyal Americans to arm themselves”. Burn the building to the ground, blaming Antifa who supposedly just came out as the armed wing of the Democratic Party.
And you’ve got a spectacular shitshow, with the worst possible option for you personally a personality cult with the subsequent martyrdom for decades to come.
It could have been so much worse. If Trump had the skill, if he had even a modicum of historical knowledge, if he had the humility to ask the right (well, the wrong) person how, he’d know he had the resources to do even more damage.
America stepped on a rusty nail, but dodged a bullet.
The exquisite irony is that the right-leaning media spent years claiming that Obama had made America a laughingstock…so the right went and voted in Trump.
I have served my country since I was 17 years old. I have taken pride in the uniform and for what it stands for. This morning, I am embarrassed and ashamed of the actions of my fellow Americans. I have never, ever felt this way and mere words cannot explain my sorrow. Our country is dying. General Mattis said it best:
His use of the Presidency to destroy trust in our election and to poison our respect for fellow citizens has been enabled by pseudo political leaders whose names will live in infamy as profiles in cowardice," he added. “Our Constitution and our Republic will overcome this stain and We the People will come together again in our never-ending effort to form a more perfect Union, while Mr. Trump will deservedly be left a man without a country.”
armed storming of Congress to stop peaceful transfer of power, encouraged and fomented by false fact campaign by the outgoing president and his sycophant supporters (of which graham was one of the biggest) is a time to NOT relax.
FFS trump refused to send in the national guard to clear congress. Pence had to order it and coordinate the response.
So we had members of Congress ready to object to the vote, people break in and dance in the Capitol a little and when they reconviegn no one objects. Seems like it worked.
Plenty of them still objected. 130 members of the House still objected to the PA vote along with at least 2 Senators. They were defeated, as they knew they would be. There was never any doubt how it would end up. It was a stunt that a few members of congress pulled away from after the assault on the Capital.
Honestly did not know that. Which 2 senators objected to the PA vote? All i see are the “I can’t now” story’s. It’s amazing how hard it is to find an actual vote breakdown.
Relax as in I was only commenting on several of the speeches I saw last night. I’m not giving Graham a pass overall on this and I’m as pissed off and embarrassed about the events of yesterday as anyone. However, I’m still able to recognize individual acts that deserve credit when they happen. It’s important for people like Graham to step up and recognize Biden and Harris as the legitimate precisely because he has been enabling the deluded masses.
Speaking of being embarrassed, I’m not sure I’ve really felt this way before as an American. Maybe I should have felt this way at times before but I never have. One can only hope that this is rock bottom and we’re on our way back up.
Invoke the 25th and let’s get rid of this guy from any chance of holding office again.
You’re right, Trump said yesterday that he was going to march to the Capital with them and many of them actually thought that Trump was at the head of the crowd. Of course he went back to the WH and continued to tweet instead.
If we ever get a Trumplike demagogue again who’s a true believer rather than just personally greedy we’re going to be in much bigger trouble. We’ve got a significant amount of people in this country who are ready to bend the knee.
You shouldn’t be. First off, it was a small number of extremists and avowed white supremacists and antisemites. They are not your average American or even Trump voter. They were not a threat to democracy and that characterization is just hyperbole. The real problem is Trump. He should be embarrassed. To a larger extent, the Trump supporters who for four years have accused his opponents of suffering from TDS and being snowflakes, should be embarrassed. The Trump supporters who said they don’t like Trump the man but support his policies and positions should be embarrassed. At the very least they should reflect upon the past four years of defending him and downplaying Trump’s behavior as irrelevant or just a distraction. No. It turns out the man matters. The people who have been calling him a lowlife and a bad person with few redeeming qualities, were right to believe that that mattered.
We should all be embarrassed that we are either poor judges of character or have gotten to the point that we believe character does not matter. If you are a Republican ask yourself: would prefer a Democrat with dignity, integrity and class or a Republican who lacks integrity, is crass and undignified but tells you want to believe is true? Character matters.
That’s bullshit. This narrative coming out that if this were BLM they would have been killed is backwards. How many Antifa members were killed by police? How many BLM protesters were killed by police? How many looters were killed by police? I believe the answer is none.
How many of these Trump supporters were killed? More than zero.
