Triathalon and Getting Big

Hey guys,

Had a question regarding this. Is it possible to achieve this or do they not go hand in hand. I have always wanted to compete in one, and would love to do them for the rest of my life. Always been a strong swimmer and biker. Swam and played water polo in high school, and am continuing in college. Runnings not my fortay due to shin splints, but I am sure I can overcome it. So would it be possible to get bigger while training and competing in triatholons?

1st Step would to get on a schedule. so if anyone has any info or advice on a schedule of how to train for a triathlon I would appreciate it. Thanks again.

Sure it is. Now be Good/great/elite in Tri’s No prob not. The two just dont go hand in hand. Yes you can compete, heck may even do OK but I would guess great at all the sport just isnt made for it. its a long endurance event you r body will need and want to be pretty light.

With ANY goal you have to take the consequences the negative. me for instance right now in gaining a ton of weight concentrating on strewnght etc for powerlifting and strong man. I can sure as hell tell you there no way Im going to go win or do well in a marathon. The two dont go hand in hand. It doesnt mean however I get winded getting up from the coach etc. you have to pick your poison accept the good and the bad.

Also depends on what type of Tri’s were talking. smaller shorter distance events or full out crazy Iron many 100+mile biking etc events. Being bigger would lend more towrd tghe shorter versions then the full on crap your self while running to win the race Iron mans.

Best of luck with what ever you choose

Sure. Pat Tillman did a triathalon or two, nobody told him giant 250lb football players aren’t supposed to be able to bike/run/swim that much.

Of course, if you want to really excel in triathalon competition, then no, you can’t get big. Phill’s right on the money.

Eat a crapload, for starters. If you’re going to do both, you need to make sure you got plenty of fuel. Especially on a schedule including both weights and insane amounts of energy systems work, it is unlikely you’ll gain too much fat unless you really let yourself go.

Also, take care of your Test levels. I mean, nothing drastic or anything, but with a crazy amount of BOTH weight and endurance work, your test levels could really hit bottom pretty quick, and cortisol levels could be pretty bad too.

How old are you?

to go with my other post: if you’re under 18-20 years old, under no circumstances should you take a test booster. Deal with exercise induced crappy test/cortisol levels instead. Don’t mess with your endocrine system while you’re still developing it. Risks outweigh the benefits. If you’ve stopped developing, then feel free to go for the TRIBEX/Alpha Male.

I agree, you can certainly get bigger and train for a tri, but you won’t really be able to excell at both.

I remember a couple of bigger (compratively) sprinters who could run some decent times in cross country in high school.

Thanks guys, I am 19 years old.

I guess your right, sack up and pick your poison.

Any sites or books that anyone recommends?

You should look into SPRINT triathalons. These are hard work / painful because they are very fast. The run is only 3 miles. With the shorter distances, they’ll be good for a beginner, but also you won’t have to get endurance athlete thin either.
As far as the training program; are you going to incorporate major iron, what are you doing now, how much time you got etc?

www.triathalontraining.org is a good starter
