Training With Ed Coan

CARPE POON!

You’ve probably already covered this CS, however- I’m going to run coan bench and was wondering what his thoughts on pausing reps on the heavier days are? Especially in the first few lighter weeks? I was thinking of just pausing everything (including CG’s and Inc. Bench) until I feel like I won’t be able to get the weight without touch n’ going.

Close-grips are the only thing that are paused. You can paused the inclines if you feel the need to.

Good luck at the meet, bro!

I’ll probably just pause the CG then, thanks man. If I enjoy this as much as I suspect I will I can see myself looking into Coan squat too.

Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - Squats & Deads

Warm Up

 1. PVC roll everything
 2. Lots of stretching

Back Squats
2 X 5 X 145
1 X 3 X 235
1 X 2 X 285
1 X 1 X 325
2 X 2 X 360* Tied PR.
1 X 1 X 405 (7/8 squat)

NOTES: The first set of 360 fucking sucked. I was seeing stars and my face was on fire after the first rep. Lost tightness and didn’t open up my hips. Second set I came back and put on a clinic.

The 405 is a funny story. Ed just slapped on some more weight for us to do a “half squat” and get a feel for the weight. He said I was closer to parallel then I was a half squat, so I’ll take it haha. I’m thinking 405 will be my final attempt at the meet.

Deadlifts
1 X 5 X 135
1 X 3 X 225
1 X 2 X 315
1 X 1 X 365* Slow.
1 X 2 X 385* Not sure if PR?

NOTES: Well, on 385, Ed told me that I walked up to the bar completely unprepared with my head up my ass (verbatim). I stepped back for a few seconds. Ed told me to move my stance in a few inches. Next time I pulled, I could’ve cleaned it. Ed told me that I shouldn’t have been able to do that, but I did.

Bent-over Rows
2 X 3 X 225

Wide-grip Lat Pulldowns
3 X 10 X 150

ENDING NOTES: It was an “OK” training session. Everybody was there in the morning and it was kind of crowded because of the holiday. Oh well, I got my shit done and got out. The gym had to be 100 degrees by 9:30. No AC FTW.

In other news, kind of depressed today. Don’t know why; maybe it’s the girl situation. I know I shouldn’t be bummed about the chick because I was played like a fool and it’s my own fault, but I can’t help but feel kinda shitty about it. Having it be the fourth doesn’t make it any better 'cause I don’t have anyone to spend it with. Fuck it, right? Hoes will be hoes. Hopefully gonna come home early from my uncle’s house tonight and have a stogie and watch the fireworks with my bro.

Also, growing out the power beard and shaving my head the night before the meet for some xxxtra gainz.

Happy 4th, everybody.

No problem. If you do decide to run the Coan squat, then you’re going to want to kill yourself the first 4 weeks.

IDK man, I struggle to imagine anything which makes one want to die as much as smolov base. Running it right now for 2cnd proper time. 4x a week with such high % of max is very very rough.

I’m excited to see how your meet goes. You’ve made awesome progress so far, you are going to kill it once you start to peak!

Thanks, Mol. I’m 24 days out, so the time is winding down. Also looks like you’re making some good gains in your squat and deadlift.

Saturday, June 7, 2012 - Back & Biceps

Warm Up

 1. PVC roll back
 2. Lots of stretching
 3. Shoulder stuff

Pull Ups
3 X 10 X BW

Wide-grip Lat Pulldowns
3 X 12 X 60

Close-grip Low Rows
3 X 15 X 60

Barbell Curls
1 X 12 X 45
1 X 10 X 50
1 X 8 X 55
1 X 8 X 65
1 X 8 X 70

Plate-Loaded Preacher Curls
3 X 12 X 50

Straight Bar Cable Curls
1 X 12 X 25
1 X 12 X 30
1 X 10 X 35

Standing Double Cable Curls
3 X 10 X 15

ENDING NOTES: Changed up the exercises this time around because my biceps haven’t grown much in the past month or so. I’m hoping the straight bar curls can get me a good peak going, along with the strict preacher curls. Actually starting to see some veins in my arms when I’m lifting, so I guess that’s a good sign.

Was also talking to this woman who had to be about 30 years old, but was smokin’ hot lol. She was pretty strong, too. Chatted her up for a bit, exchanged pleasantries and went on my merry way.
