Training With Ed Coan

Just kidding. He’s a great guy, best of luck in your training with him. I recommend you shut your mouth, open your ears, and be present. Spot, load, do whaterver. Make sure you are a worthy part of the group. I know it’s hard, but try not to act like a fan. Have fun.[/quote]

Thanks, Vince. After reading “The Education of a Powerlifter”, I think I got the idea of being “the new guy”. Like you said, just shut up and listen. And the hardest part is going to be trying not to act like a bitch in front of him haha.

CS

I think you should say something like, “Wow thanks for this opportunity I’ve always looked up for you.” But after that don’t dote on him excessively.

Well, the big day is in less than 8 hours. I’ll hardly be getting any sleep tonight.

Ed is a good guy. Always has a nice thing to say and still strong!

Well, today was the big day. I arrived at about 8:15 and met Ed at about 8:30. Real nice guy. Me and him were there training with about 10 other guys. Some of them were benching, but my group was squatting, and boy was it humbling.

First, he took a look at my form and gave me some pointers and advice. Here’s what he told me:

Stop watching Westside videos.
Take your stance in.
Point your toes out more.
Squeeze the shit out of the bar.

Most of these I already knew, but hearing it from him just made it abundantly clear. I worked up to 335x2 on free squats with a belt and wraps. I failed on 365. I got into the bottom of the rep and dumped it (kind of). Ed told me that I don’t know how to stay tight enough, but I at least hit depth lol. He told me that the narrower my stance, the easier it will be for me to hit parallel (or below).

We finished up the workout with some assistance work. He told me that if push hard enough on the main lift, then I shouldn’t need to do a shit load of assistance work. After squats, I did 3 sets of 8 on hack squats, a superset of leg extensions and leg curls for 3x12, and some abs for 3x15. It was a great workout and I actually enjoyed it a lot more than a Westside-style workout.

He told me that he’s there on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5, and to come back on Monday. I’ll be training with him and his guys 3 days a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The other day will pretty much be me on my own and doing what he tells me.

All in all, it was a great experience and can’t wait to go back on Monday. Ed said that as we get about two weeks into training, we’ll be able to start setting up a real program and shit like that.

Now begins my transformation into a champion. God bless Ed Coan haha.

Definitely awesome. Definitely jealous.

Sounds like a great time!

People like that don’t get impressed by your slobbering all over them and begging their autograph. (You didn’t, I hope?) They’re impresses by your attitude to the weights. It’s grabbing the bar and squatting the shit out of it that looks good.

Congrats!!

Haha, surprisingly, I didn’t lose my cool when he walked in. He introduced himself, as did I, and I said, “It’s an honor to meet you.” And that’s about it. We stretched, warmed up, and got to some squatting.

I always hated the westside style of squatting. Sitting way far back with a wide ass stance always made my hips cramp and cause my torso to tilt too far forward. I never felt like I had any real power. Good to hear that I’m not fucking crazy.

Keep up updated on your training CS.

videos ?

Very cool, CS. Don’t screw this up!

Enough about you, how much did Ed squat?

I tried it and it sucked. So you’re not alone.

Not to derail this thread, but were you using gear? If you tried “westside style” squatting without briefs or a suit, then that was a pretty horrible idea. Louie and Dave Tate always advocate the use of briefs or a suit on wide stance squats.

That explains a lot. I train squat raw most of the time and I’m build somewhat small with really narrow hips (I can’t pull sumo for shit, if i bench with my feet anything but close to the bench my hips cramp). Even with briefs though, I still feel like sitting back into the gear makes my torso tilt way too far forward.

Gotcha. Thanks

Hey CSEagles, just a thought(and you may have started this or at least thought about it), but you should start a training log about this. Post your workouts, and also the tidbits of advice he gives.

Haha, sadly, he didn’t squat in my time there. I asked him about his hip and he said it was completely fine. I’m hoping to see him lift one of these days, here. Just meeting the guy was an experience, and watching him lift will be a completely different ball game.

Very interesting!

Second the suggestion of starting a log (if you don’t have one already…)

I have a training log for my Westside workouts. Should I start a new one just for training with Ed?
