Training with Anemia

Hi coach. I remember you once has a severe case of anemia caused by hemorroids. What would be your training recommendations for someone in that same situation, besides fixing the hemorroids obviosuly.

Thanks

Well, I’m not sure that I’m the right person to ask as it ended up in a heart attack from having too little red blood cells to deliver oxygen to the heart due to the blood loss. To be fair, I did not know it was as simple as an hemorroids issue and it took 8 different tests at the hospital to figure it out!

In retrospect, I think the same recommendations as someone recovering from a heart attack might have been appropriate. Basically using a type of training that minimizes oxygen update and blood pressure elevation. Basically doing the least amount of work, not going close to failure and doing a decent amount of ver low intensity cardio.

How severe is your anemia? Could you look at blood transfusions or IV drip? Those would bring your levels up sharpish.

For hemorrhoids, electrotherapy is showing alot of promise. My uncle had it done and after two sessions, the volume of blood lost had reduced close to 0.

Its severe. Next week I,m going to meet with the proctologist. I´m already doing IVs, Thanks

From a medical standpoint you should avoid physical excercise when suffering from (severe) anemia. Coach Thibaudeau just explained the reason why. Why train at all when the conditions not allow? You would not drive your car with no oil in the (combustion) engine. The poor results would also create a negative spiral mentally.

Come back to fight in the gym another day! I recommend you use the time available for reading up on, and plan your training in the future (when healed and energized in about 3 months - after proper procedures and re-established iron levels). Any fun programs you’ve always wanted to run?

Hello Christian,

do you take any supplements that help with your anemia? Or recommend anything natural you do?

Thank you
