Op, don’t let the little back and forth between me and Clauden distract you. There’s more than one way to skin a cat and I’m certainly not trying to imply my way is the only way or even the best way. What I do works for me. You have to find out what works for you and just get it done. I don’t think what Clauden is saying is “wrong” per se, I just have a different point of view.
Thing is, I just wanted some feedback on if serious gains can be gotten while losing fat on keto. And the answer seems “no”.
Got that book you vouche, carb nite, I’ll see how it differs from standard keto.

Keto is definitely not a good way of doing BOTH in terms of losing fat/ gaining muscle.
Keto is for weight-loss primarily if I understand it correctly.
You will get nowhere with hard training + no food. You will only land in bed and never get out.

You are not going to add much muscle, if any. But you will probably get stronger if you are currently untrained.
I’ll add if you run carb night, you will most likely be miserable for 2 to 3 weeks and you just have to gut it out. It becomes much more tolerable after 2 to 3 weeks.
Keto is an extreme diet.
This will not help you as a beginner trying to gain strength.
You have to decide which master you are going to serve.
Inevitably, if you are already fluffy (read: fat) then your body should have no problem growing with strength. Focus instead on getting stronger and clean up your diet. That basically means get rid of junk foods, sugary foods, and drink water. Make sure to get 150-200g protein, FIRST. And let teh rest of the chips fall where they may. Believe me, if you make yourself eat enough meat/beans to get to 200g protein, you will NOT be hungry.
Your body will recomposition itself fine. More muscle means increase in metabolism. And after you have added some strength, then you can look at where you are fat-wise in about 6 months. If still too fluffy? Add in a couple of bouts of HIIT cardio on off-lifting days.
