Training Legs

How do you guys feel about putting ten pound plates under your heels during front squats? seems like it would help hit quads well
I would worry about my arches collapsing over time.

Maybe investing in some olympic lifting shoes would be a better idea, if you have the cash… Or a wooden block with a gradual gradient

Yea, thats how i do my front squats, elevated, though i use 35lb plats. Think i said that earlier =p
do you put them under there just to isolate the quads more or does it have a bit today with ankle mobility at all?

I bought a pair of Rogue Do Wins 2 weeks ago, and the difference on squats is huge. The heel elevation is really great.

Purely for Quad isolation. Throwing some 35s under my feet and really standing up on them, with basically only being on the ground via the metatarsals of my foot really isolates the quads. Plus, doing this, you HAVE to do it with a narrow stance, so as a bonus, you get some outter quad development.

OK when I do front squats, I feel it more in my lower back and abs than my legs. I mean, Im sure my leg are probable getting worked but wtf i just started doing them and i thought they were going to be amazing and burn the hell outta my legs but i mean my abs burn more than my legs. wth? maybe I just dont notice it? i dont get it. grrr I repped 160 5 times today and i got tired after the set obviously but it doesnt burn my legs that much.

might have to fix your form then. If youre feeling it in your abs, that means your core is basically try to stabilize you. If you simultaneouslyfeel it in your lower back, you’re probably dipping forward and trying to correct yourself, stimulating both your abs and lower back. My advice is fix your form, do some research.

Calves are hit differently depending on if youre sitting or standing (Gastrocnemius/Soleus).

FYI,

Soleus = Seated

Gastroc = Standing.

Carry on.

^^yeah that can’t be good. Shouldn’t be squatting with any variation and saying “I’m sure my legs are probably getting worked” lol

Re evaluate your form and video yourself if you can. That has helped me so much with my lifting form. Actually doing the lift then right after being able to see exactly what I just did (not what I thought I did)

Gotta love a smart phone with video

Anyone do Jefferson squats? They are great for hamstrings and glutes.

Let’s see your legs for proof.

Is Jefferson squats this?

I’m sure they target the lowerbody good enough, but this obscurity will place too much uneven load on your upper body in my view. I don’t really see what this exercise does that regular squat and deadlift variation can’t. The load you can use will be too much limited by the upperbody anyway.

yea I was thinking of getting a video. But I mean my second exercise is hack squats (with the pads on shoulder) and they kill my legs and I can keep a great arch and go almost glutes to hams, but front squats are so weird. Then again, I am about 6 foot 5 so I mean maybe barbell squats are just akward for me and I should stick to hack squats and try some leg press varieties?

my legs are freakin long bird legs

That’s why you ask for pics. If someone asks me why I like Hammer Strength machines, the answer is in the progress made. If someone logs on and states that some exercise REALLY WORKS for a body part, clearly they should either have developed a decent sized body part from it or directly trained someone who has.

Jefferson squats eh? I believe ive seen Kai greene do em, but personally i havent given them a shot. It looks really fucking awkward lol

I believe jefferson squat are simply what we could call pin squat. A little bit like box squat but you start at bottom (some may start higher for bigger loads) position with the barbell on pins. Now find someone who has built huge hamstring with this …

Awkward you said ? hehe with my arm’s length I would probably end up crushing my ball.

Wow - I just spent 15 minutes watching Jamie Eason doing Jefferson Squats.

exactly, As H4M put it, I have “T Rex arms.” That bar would be riding Bounch N sack the entire set.
