Training in the Heat

When I started my weight lifting venture about 6-7 months ago I weighed 57kg. Today I am 74. When I started (it was in the australian summer) and I was working out in my backyard I enjoyed the heat and worked out in the heat just because I could. I never really got hot.

Fast forward and im 17 kilos heavier. Winter is about to start in a week or so, its nothing like summer right now. Every gym session I am half dead. Resting I am about the same but as soon as I start doing exercise I start burning up easily. I was never much of a huge sweater. Today when I would sit in between my squat sets to rest I would leave a pool of sweat behind me. The back of my singlet was absolutely drenched.

I came into the gym weighing 74. something kilos, left at 72. I had drank 2 bottles (1.2L) of water during my 1 hour gym session. Some gym sessions I drink 3 liters, I am always thirsty I just drink as much as I can without chugging it & throwing up mid-set.

I am just getting hotter and hotter I notice I am leaving after every second or so to go to the bathroom and wash my face to cool myself off. Just wondering if this is normal, I guess as you grow you would get hotter. Especially since muscles generate heat and fat just insulates it. Fits my description well when im idle there isn’t much difference from 6 months go but when I do physical exercise I boil up.

I can’t imagine what I would be like when im 90kg lol.

Well, your intensity is probably a lot higher now than it used to be, so that would account for it somewhat.

I am a sweater myself… some days barely any, some days I’m swimming; humidity is probably the biggest factor here.

You could look at your diet to make sure your salt levels are right. You could also start drinking something with carbs in it as you work out (gatorade or whatever).

Yes, working out when it’s hot outside isn’t fun and is sweaty. Big muscular guys (or big unmuscular guys) working out when it’s hot outside can get even sweatier.

You do the best you can do. Wear layers/light clothes, bring a towel so you don’t drench the equipment, and pre-hydrate before you even start training.

This. Nevermind the heat, but drinking water when lifting is a missed opportunity for key nutrition. You can easily throw down a few hundred calories of protein and carbs that your body wants/needs. Something like Plazma or Surge Recovery would be top choice, but I get that you’re in Australia. Even whey with juice or Gatorade would be better than water.
