Training for 175lb Arnold Strongman World Championship (2013)

This Strongman log is awesome. Saw the 315 widowmaker set, crazy strong. Will follow because I’d like see further on how you work on your strength, keeping your weight down and strongman exercises. We have a small strongman community here and a competition annually. PS - your avi is total Boss.

Thanks Xander I appreciate it. 315x20 was a goal for awhile I just needed to man up and do it. I’ve thought about doing 335 here soon but it hurt to walk for 3 days not sure how beneficial those widowmaker sets are to my current training!

I am not planning on keeping my weight down actually. I’d like to eventually move up to the 231 class but we’ll see

I used to talk to a guy from Singapore who did that comp. pretty cool! You ever do it?

231 will be impressive. Most of the guys here tend to compete between 105 to 120kg which is around your target weight but there are some lighter guys too (it’s open meaning no weight restrictions). The competition tends to be more “cardio” based rather than more strength related - the events are truck pull (a firefighting support vehicle), a farmers walk with 100kg each hand (I think) and tyre flip for distance. I’ve watched it the last two years and I will work on my strength and endurance before considering it. I’m 33 definitely want to have a crack at it. I’m going to do a widowmaker type set for squats or leg press every leg day. My weights and maxes are so modest I’m embarrassed to say haha

Now I will check the entry requirements so that if you’re ever in Singapore during first quarter in coming years you can join and give the field a real shake.

Yeah I’d like to go lightweight pro eventually which is 231. People have told me thats not smart as they tend to have much bigger frames than me and I would be to small but it is not going to stop me. Hell yeah you should do it, training for it and the motivation you will get stronger than ever before and thats all that matters.

I doubt i’d ever be in Singapore but one of my goals is to do a contest abroad someday.

Worked up to this making plate jumps before 585 then 605

3x3 speed pulls with 315

Good stuff man - inspirational as always! You’re a beast on overheads! Looking forward to see how you do in your next competition!

I couldn’t find a big enough rock oddly enough for stone carries/lifts by the way; I found a 77lb one and walked it back to my house… about 15 minutes or so. It felt heavy THEN… lol… after such a long walk. It was the biggest I found though that wasn’t gargantuan (1,000+ I’m guessing). Most of the stuff around here is slate… big ones would fall apart when I tried to pick them up. I posted a picture in my HUB that my wife took just for kicks if you wanna see.

You have experience with Slater’s stone molds?

I think I’m gonna have to buy some.

ASC: Strongman Fitness to Debut at 2013 Arnold

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2012 IronMind

ASC has just announced â??a new forum for all athletes to compete at the highest level,â?? in what is being called strongman fitness.

2012 lightweight national champion Kristyn Vytlacil Whisman (left) with Dione Wessels (center) and Mike Johnston (right). IronMind® | Courtesy of ASC.

Here is the official ASC press release, verbatim:

Strongman Fitness Will Make Debut at the Arnold in 2013

January 2, 2012 â?? In response to overwhelming interest ASC will create a new forum for all athletes to compete at the highest level

â??When one thinks of a strongman, visions of great men of myth and legend like Hercules, Samson and Milo probably come to mind. In the modern era ASC strongman like Marshall White, Michael Burke, Brian Shaw, Vincent Urbank and many others fit the bill. But, letâ??s be honest who among us towers over 6â??4â?? tall and weighs in at 330 + pounds?

So what about the rest of the world? â??Stature is not the only determining factor of great strength or zeal for competition,â?? says ASC President Dione Wessels. â??I am a 5â??2â?? woman. I was a National champion strongwoman and World championship power lifter. I love and have dedicated my life to strength sports. With that being said, ASC is proud to announce that the first Strongman Fitness Championship will take place at the Arnold Sports Festival in 2013.â??

So, what exactly is Strongman Fitness? â??We are not reinventing the wheel here,â?? quipped ASC VP Mike Johnston, â??Light weight menâ??s and womenâ??s classes already exist in strongman. We are merely provided an opportunity for these amazing athletes to compete on the biggest stage in fitness the world.â??

The first Strongman Fitness qualifiers will take place at ASC platinum plus shows in 2012. Top men and women will qualify directly for the Arnold in 2013. The rest of the field will come from the NAS Nationals in November 2012. The weight classes for Arnold and the platinum-plus qualifiers will be a 175-pound menâ??s open with athletes weighing up to 175 pounds and 150-pound womenâ??s open with women weighing up to 150 pounds. The up to 175 pound menâ??s class and the traditional NAS womenâ??s lightweight and middle weight classes will remain at the NAS Nationals with a percentage of competitors coming from each class.

â??We are very excited about these classes as we believe that athletes from around the world will want to compete,â?? continued Wessels, â??In America this will help our local NAS promoters by giving them a whole new athlete base as lighter weight competitors and women try to qualify for the Nationals. NAS promoters will be able to offer the traditional menâ??s 175 and womenâ??s LW and MW classes.â??

â??We anticipate a myriad of questions regarding Strongman Fitness,â?? commented Johnston, â??We will be setting up a â??sticky postâ?? on the NAS Anvil to field questions. Further, ASC will be organizing training seminars and coaching conferences for those interested in strongman techniques, training principles and Strongman Fitness application. These courses will be rooted in science and proctored by our award winning team of National Champions, strength and conditioning coaches, medical professionals and physical educators.â??

More information will be forth coming on the nas forum at nasanvil.com
