Train the Boxing Way

I’m not interested in becoming a boxer, but from what I’ve read, training to box can quite possibly put you in the best shape of your life and get you jacked in a hurry. Exercises like hitting the heavy bag, speed bag, jumping rope, etc. Any thoughts? Also, what would one do to gain access to such equipment. I see the obvious answer to go to a boxing gym, but I’m new in the area and there are probably other solutions that I’m not thinking of right now.

The general training around Boxing is extraordinary and quite diverse. Personally its one of my favorite forms of training and I keep goign back to it.

However, you will want some instruction on “the sweet science” in a broad range of topics (everything from technical aspects of throwing a punch to proper wrapping of your hands) and even if you were to set up a small gym at home I would still suggest joing a boxing club as well.

Do you want to box for fitness or fight competitively? If it’s the latter, finding a boxing gym or a trainer is a must. Learning to box is something that simply cannot be learned from a book or a video.

Boxing for fitness is a great workout, too and could be found at any health club.

Where in FL are you? I know there a ton of boxing gyms in Miami, a few in Boca Raton, Tampa, and Orlando I think, just off the top of my head.

got to jump on a borrow your thread for a sec.
Grappler: I live in Orlando and would love to know aobut any good boxing or MMA schools in the area.
thanks a ton.

For MMA and grappling in Orlando, check out Marcio Simas BJJ school. It’s on Colonial Dr. For boxing/kickboxing, check out Florida Fitness Concepts, which is just around the corner from Marcio’s on Mills.

If you want to benefit from some of the conditioning benefits of boxing, test drive my HOC programs that combine havy bag work with ballistic dumbbell drills. Also test drive the Jump Rope HOC combo. See my HOC article here at T-Nation.

This is good stuff. Thanks for the input and keep it coming. Grappler, I’m in West Palm Beach so Boca is not too far from me, but I’d prefer something closer.

invinciblehero,

For reliable quality equipment I’ve been shopping at Ringside.com for the past five years or so. Their inventory is huge and in addition to quality they have reasonable prices as well.
