Track and Field Discus Training

Does anyone here know of any good training methods to increase the distance of my discus throwing and shotput throwing?

I watched this video and saw him throwing a medicine ball and I’ll ask my coach if I could try doing that to our brick wall. Anything else like lifts that would increase my discus throwing range? Once my technique gets better I’m sure it’ll go further.

I’m a sprinter, but we are almost the same only you dont have to worry about bodyweight so you gotta go for absolute strength rather than relative strength.

Basically you want to become very strong before you get too deep into power training.
Are you doing any weight training at all ?

Look up Dan John’s articles.

I am a sprinter also and ran a 4.49-40 but my tendonitis is holding me back from doing running right now because I’m afraid of aggrivating it. And yes, I’ve been lifting for 2 years and is quite strong. I can lift 315lbs. 7 times as of last week. I’m 6’2 and my weight averages at around 197lbs.

Push press!!! If you can push press a lot you will shot putt a lot. Incline bench, squat and olympic lifts also.

I notice some guys who can bench a lot but can’t push press even 225 yet bench 315 wtf. Resse hofa could always push press a ton of weight and is a great shot putter. All the great shot putters can easily push press 350+

Also yes those medecine ball throws are great, one of the better things for discus.

My buddy who is great discus thrower -170 with 2kg, also weighs about 7 lbs less then you- does those medecine ball throws a lot. He mostly does oly lifting also, lots of stretching also will help you get more whip in discus. He has incredibly weak bench also, so that is not going to help you as much as say huge squat or power clean.

Your leg strength will be what you need to work on more then bench for discuss as well.

I can power clean around 250. Could be stronger but tendonitis is hard to shake off. I did those medicine ball throws today and I think they’re great. I’ll be doing those everyday in weightlifting class after my workout.

If your a young thrower, go learn how to throw first! Learn how to hit a position in the ring and what IT FEELS LIKE to hit that position. Its far more valuable than figuring out which specific lifts to do. Yes… get strong, but you technique is more important. I can’t tell you how many people I threw farther than that were FAR stronger than I am/was.

All through high school I was a position thrower. It helped me out much better as I got into college. Strength is much easier to develop than technique. Strength eventually came and I benefited from it, true. Watch as much video as possible. Watch people like Alekna, Powell, and Fazakas.

Check out the effortless throw and throw farther. Google search them. There is a Mac Throws website out there as well that is very valuable.

I practiced today at school and I threw only 102ft. I’m still working on my form but its a step from yesturday which I threw about 90ft at best. I’m getting a lot better at the spin now. Yesturday I couldn’t perform it right.

Does anybody know of a good video that teaches good form for both of these?

Check out a video by Mac Wilkins

You can probably pickit up on MF athletic or other T&F sites. John Powell also has a great video as well. Also, hit up you tube and start watching videos there. Again, Alekna, Fazekas, Powell are great people to watch. Jason Tunks is also, IMO, a good technical thrower. Oh yeah… LARS RIEDEL is GOD! Check him out too!

Also, get over to throwfarther.org , theeffortlessthrow, and MAC THROWS.com All great, THROWS SPECIFIC sites.

If you want a good Shot put video and you are a rotational thrower, I like Adam Nelson’s video at throwclean.com

J

if I’m correct it;s macthrowvideo.com, anyways, in my opinion, the best site for throwing resources!

That’s the one!

Would it be better to do push press with a barbell or dumbbells?

barbell you can move more weight, better for strength.

push pressing db sounds kind of dangerous too lol. Something I deffinately wouldn’t try.
