Torn Bicep Tendon

That is good news! Now nuthin to it but to do it! (Rehab that is, lol)

I like that Colin… I think I have found another mantra… “Nothing to it… but to do it”.

I like it. Plain. Simple.

Go Beefy, we are behind you.

Thanks Everybody!

I have a favor to ask.
Can you suggest/point me to/post a link to motivational articles regarding sports injury recovery?

Just trying to read up and keep my motivation high to get through this. Anything powerlifitng related would be great, but sports injury recovery in genral can work too.

Little help?

Thanks guys!

Frank

Messing with my kid Friday and had a 50 % tear on my right bicep. Im going to the training room here where I work and see the Dr. thats comes once a week to see if it will need surgery. Its hell to get old!!!

Crap! No Way!
Sorry to hear that. In my recent reading and also my talks with MD’s. and other lifters who have had full and partial tears, I’ve heard this:

If you are older, and you have a partial tear, most Doc’s will NOT want to do surgery, and say it will heal on it’s own. The people that listend to this later told me it was the worst advice they got. They have 50% strength and terrible grip and supination in that hand. Doc’s figure you are gonna sit on the couch and use your remote for
exercise now.

My suggestion: IF it’s a tear, even a partial tear, push for surgery and get it fixed right.

That is…unless you like the thought of the remote and couch option

Let me know what they say, and what you decide.

Prayers are with you Bro!

I tore mine a few months back. try rubazolus, its a natural herb. works pretty good. I’m back to lifting now only 3 times a week to start.

Drip!
Thanks!

Did you have surgery? Type of surgery? Total tear? partial? Never heard of that, but I’ll certainly check it out!

Thanks again.

How are you dealing with the rehab time out of the gym, etc?

Frank

Hey man –

Some advice as I tore my tendon completely off as well in the exact same way and doing the exact same thing:

Remember neurological crossover. Hit your opposing side really hard, I mean hard. I had surgery september of 07, and by march I was doing pullups again.

If you beat the healthy side, the injured side must keep up. As soon as you are able to lift again on that side your gains will be amazing. I am actually a little heaver than before right now and leaner. Just make sure you up the calories too as healing makes your caloric needs increase.

Good luck man!

How ya feeling mrbeefy? I hope all is going well. I went to the training room today to see Dr.Cain. after looking at my arm he wants to do surgery next week. I start my vacation on fri and get home from the beach wed. So wednesday when I get home I am driving to B-Ham, get a MRI done and have the surgery first thing Thursday. what a vacation. I looked at my records and I had surgery last August.

Physio…
Man if that is your pic in your avatar, you look really familiar. Something tells me I’ve seen you at a meet before. Where you at in Ohio? I’m in Garfield Heights, right outside of Cleveland.

Would you mind sharing more of your rehab story with me? Things you did, things you may have done/or not done differently?

Uwacop!
Bro…more surgery! Who would have thought that as I was recovering from tis injury, and you were helping me out…that YOU would need the same surgery!!! WEIRD Huh !!!

Well, we certainly have to keep in touch to walk each other through this process, share our rehab, and motivate each other to a newer, stronger MONSTER!!!

Have fun on vacation and TAKE care of your arm! Be careful with it.

Keep in touch…
Let me know how it goes. I will be updating my journals on Friday, after my surgeons apooitnment.

Peace out Bro!

Frank

yea man! I live 45 minutes north of Columbus but I am up in Cleveland all the time! You may have seen me at the arnold or somewhere else as I own a nutrition store and am usually at all the events.

I didnt do ANY physical therapy as my doctor allowed me to do it all myself, as it is part of my field of study. You just have to make sure you rub the scar from surgery to prevent any adhesion from tissue, allow the muscles to stretch, and get your ass in the gym asap.

Five days after surgery I was squatting with a sling on, and doing all left body exercises haha. Make sure you are supplementing with plenty of fish oil and uber high amounts of protein.

21st Century Medicine at it’s Finest!
Rehab Update:

Well…everything is A-OK…and running right on track (or better!)
PT is going great! I’m at 110% flexion without pain, and my supination is equal to my right arm.

Inna (PT) is working on breaking up the remaining scar tissue around the site of the injury, and Marty (LMT) is working the nerve problem in the thumb and index finger. No serious pain anymore, just tingling (falling asleep feeling). When I wake up in the morning, my left arm is stiff as hell, and takes a lot of moving around to get it limber. Might just be age? “Duh…I don’t think so!”

Added 4 new exercises/all done 3 times a day:
Resisted Elbow Flexion: 2 x 30
Forearm Pronation/Supination: 2 x 30
Elbow Flexion Stretch: 2 x 30
“Make It Go Away” = I have a shredded flat piece of sponge that I have to ball up in my hand until you can’t see it anymore (ergo=make it go away!)

Saw Dr. Levy (Surgeon=Post-Op) who says my arm looks great! He examined my arm and said my bicep looks great and feels right in place. The tendon is strong too! He said that besdie the small surgical scar, know one would even know I tore the tendon!

We went over what he did in surgery and he said it was a COMPLETE tear off the bone. I was also incorrect on a previous assumption. He only required ONE ANCHOR SCREW into my forearm, not three (So I can still say I’m good for “one screw”! )

He locked my brace out at 100%, so I’m only wearing it as a safety now to protect it from outside injury (grandkids grabbing it, banging it in the gym, etc). Tentative goal is to toss the brace on July 4th!

Dr. Levy and I also discussed the addition of acupuncture to the mix down the line after or at the end of PT, depending where my nerve pain is at in my thumb.

We also discussed the addition of HGH into the mix to encourage growth in the tendon and bicep to aid in recovery.
“NOTE: HGH is not an AB Steroid”
He was all for it and wanted to review the best way to approach it with my Endocrynologist (Dr. Faiman). I think this will be a “big” help!

So…all in all…a good week, and progress is beieng made. Workouts in the gym are going well. Keeping up with a minimum of 20 - 30 minutes of cardio (dropped to 176 lbs), stretching, Rehab exercises, legs (leg presses, leg extensions, hamstrings, etc. Please note that POWERLIFTERS do not routinely use these machines, so my hams are sore as hell!)

And yes, I was a little “bad”…but careful.
Just wanted to see how my arm felt so I did a few cable curls (1/2 lb, 5 lb, 10 lb) ALL assisted with my right hand for safety. Felt REALLY good.

No stretching in the tendon and no pain. I also did a few push ups (“girlie” ones first) to see if I can support my weight. No problems, and I will NOT push the window on any of these. I am going forward in my rehab~ ~ ~ NOT backward!

Spirits are up about 99% of the time. Do get a little down in the gym, watching all my Bro’s (that includes my wife!) lifitng thier little hearts out while I cheer them on from the sideline!

Bernie is prepping for St. Louis RAW Nationals and looks great. She is right on target…so I’m there for her!

Just finished reading Lance Armstong’s book: “It’s Not About The Bike”/ My Jurney back to Life". Very inspiring about overcoming insurmountable odds.

So…onward and upward…time to head for the gym!!!

Keep your comments and uplifitng stories coming…the road is long!

Good to hear! Funny it has been over a year and my elbow still feels like its asleep. I hardly notice anymore, lol.

Keep hear head up man! Pour in the extra protein and fish oils!

Wow that looks like quite an injury. The same thing happened to Tom Platz and he recovered.

Best of luck

O.K. Mr. Beefy I know you got a head start but the race is on! I had my surgery this morning the tendon was a complete tear from the bone. This is going to be alot of fun!! Are you ready??

That’s actually a sort of good news, isn’t it? No damage to the tendon proper, then?

I guess if you look at it like that but I just hate to miss sixteen weeks!

Uwacop!

Glad the surgery went well! Looks familiar! Kinda De ja vu!
Mine is coming along nicely so far.

Still have that incessant pain in my thumb though.

PT coming along well.Brace is now off.
Doing light assisted reps with light weights and bands.
Feels pretty good. Little tight in the mornings.

How’s yours feeling? What did the doc say about rehab?
Details, details!

Tomorrow is 4 weeks since surgery.
