I don’t know if this belongs in this forum, but I’ve heard a number of people who do martial arts complaining about it. Does anyone have any big toe issues that I can only describe as a constant feeling like your toe is dislocated?
I’m under the impression this is referred to as turf toe, but not really sure. All I know is it’s painful as hell, and I don’t really like feeling so gimpy when walking around.
Anyway, if anyone has this, or has had it, what have you done to improve or fix it? I’m going to a doc today and will bring it up, but since this doctor is half a retard, I’m sure she won’t know what I’m talking about.

Haha…half a retard. what about other half?
Fish oil, tape it, rest…can’t do much to fix it. Pain in the ass injury.[/quote]
Thanks for the reply, man. As for the other half, we’ll see when I ask her about it today…she may be 100%.
So the fish oil really does help with joint pain? With normal doses, or do you need to go higher for that effect? This has been an ongoing issue for probably 5 or 6 years, it just gets a hell of a lot worse when training a lot since it gets constantly stomped, folded, twisted, etc…
Anyway, thanks again…I’ll rub some dirt on it and hope for the best.

Fish oil helps but it isn’t magic. My joints ache more when I don’t take it but I can’t tell if it has an effect on injuries. I suspect it doesn’t do much for a real injury but every little bit helps.
I take at least 12 grams a day. Maybe quite a bit more would work for you but I didn’t give megadosing much of a chance. Too many pills.
i used to have really bad toe pain when i was kicking 5x a week. what worked in the short term was taping the big toe around the first joint and trying to isolate the movement of it at that first joint. a trainer told me the injury is common (“turf toe”). i figured it was from the torque and repetitive straining on the big toe from kicking as well as constant hitting. if you’re kicking, try to turn your foot over more so you’re not making contact with that area of the foot.
try to get an athletic trainer to show you how to tape up “turf toe.” i used to pop a lot of motrin/ibuprofen as well.
You have turf toe. I have had it chronically for awhile the best advise i can give you is don’t do anything that go cause stress on it like sprinting/plyos/for me it was takedowns then wait till it feels good, try not to aggravate it and use lots of ice.

Thanks guys. I’d love to rest it until it feels better, but it never really feels much better. It’s been going on for a couple years. Of course, I’ve been taking some NSAIDS for the shoulder, and that seems to be helping the toes somewhat. That which doesn’t kill us…right?
I had a similar deal with my big toe. Almost looked like gout the joint would get so inflamed. I was able to reduce stress on the toe when kicking by buddy taping it with a small piece of sponge between the toes. It functionally isolated the toe and stopped it from deviating to the lateral when pivoting on the ball of the foot. Experiment, as it does take a while to get the tape tension correct.
