To Surge Or Not To Surge

Am having some trouble deciding what to do, I picked up two cans of Surge and am about 1/2 done one canister. I really like the stuff but am having some difficulty with maintaining my daily calorie intake using it.

I am on a restricted diet for fat loss (19.5 lbs of fat loss to date btw so am pretty happy with this achievement so far). I workout around 5PM on my weight training days and am done around 6PM, before I started using Surge I would eat at around 7 PM (my last meal of the day). This usually consists of a chicken breast and veggies so it was a light meal of around 250 calories. My first three meals of the day are my largest and consist of protein and complex carbs like plain oatmeal and brown rice. With the addition of Surge after my workout I am going over my target of 1900 calories and bumping me up to 2250 cal per day.

Is it adviseable to use Surge on a fat loss diet? If so, should I cut back my calorie intake in the morning to accomadate Surge and then eat a larger meal consisting of complex carbs and protein? or is it adviseable to skip Surge right now it and use it when I try to gain lean muscle?

Thanks,
Dave

Well, I am a big fan of Surge. My recovery from workouts tends to be poor, so Surge makes a big difference for me. ESPECIALLY when dieting, because with a caloric deficit my recovery is even worse. So I would recommend using the Surge. In theory, Surge is going to feed your muscles, not your fat cells, because of the favorable metabolic environment after intense exercise. So remember, your post-workout calories are much less likely to make you fat. These are the calories you want to keep in your diet.

Keep careful records of your daily calorie intake including Surge, for the next few weeks. And take careful weekly measurements of body comp and fat loss. If you stop losing fat, or plateau for a couple weeks, try reducing the carbs in your midday meals. In other words, reduce the calories that are LEAST likely to feed your muscles and most likely to feed fat.

I think you should still go with the Surge. Post-workout nutrition is still very important even when cutting. I would recommend cutting calories from your earlier meals and/or eating higher protein-lower carb meals (if you aren’t already doing so) to accomodate having Surge after your workout.

Take a look at John Berardi’s tip
“Nutrient Timing For Training Days” for some good info as well.

Definately keep the Surge. You should never ever sacrifice post workout nutrition, cutting or bulking. Sacrificing this will just lead to muscle loss and slower metabolism.
