Tips for Increasing Squat

Hardware store would be good, or a tractor supply store, or something that deals with shipping/freight.

could you not just use the safety bars in the rack if youā€™re trying to do partials?[/quote]

Iā€™m not a fan of it, mainly because the set up is terrible with pins. With chains, you can wiggle your way under the bar and set yourself up to squat the way you would normally, like I do here

With pins, you have to squat under the bar rather than be able to push it forward and roll under it. Iā€™ve cramped up massively trying this in the past, and you really kill any chance of being explosive under the weight in my experience.

that is crazy weight your doing there :open_mouth: i have actually noticed the couple of times i have tried them feeling more in my lower back than anything

what do you guys think of olympic atg squat versus powerlifting squat ? which is better in terms of strength and benefits for mass etc

Your going to start a war with that question bro, but here goes. Personaly as a strength coach I start guys of with PLing style squat, the bar not to low or to high on the back, I like it to sit on top of rear delts, about 3" below base of the neck, thereā€™s a shelf there if you can find it.

when held properly should be able to slide a finger down between bar and spine, you have to play around to find this spot, but everyone has it. I also teach beginers to squat down about 2-5" below parelle depending on how theyā€™re built. The cues at first are to push the butt back, and then squat down trying to keep weight on the heal, and posterior chain, try to keep lower leg fairly upright.

The reason I start this way is because most people have the tendancy from the start to squat off theyā€™re toes. I like them to learn and get strong at PLing style first, then once a certain level of strength is reached (double body weight) you can start using different squatting techniques to target weak and stong areas.

High bar squats with the weight on the ball of the foot places a greater part of the load on the quad (better for BBing) and is a completely different animal, I,ve found when guys start this way, if they can do it properly, they tend to build big quads quickly, and theyā€™re postieror chain falls behind, this is hard to fix, beter to play catch up with the quads, than vice versa, this is what Iā€™ve found.

Oly squats are a great move, and have theyā€™re place, but I feel itā€™s better to perfect your form on PL style first, Iā€™m sure other people feel differently, but thats what Iā€™ve found after 20yrs. 2cents

There is no ā€œversusā€ here. Do them both. Youā€™ll never be put in a situation where you can only do one.

Not much to add, other than Pwnisher is maybe the most underappreciated poster on this entire site.

stumbled across vid I thought was interesting, and relavent, also agree with pwnisher on both, and on him being great poster - YouTube

Much appreciated. I try to give back.

Few things that has helped me a lot is various jumps, Weighted jump squats & speed squats. I feel much more explosive and less grindy during the concentric portion of the squat

ive tried jumps they helped so im gonna include them again , speed squats ive never tried because if i use 50% its only 85kg it doesnt feel like it benefits me and jump squats if you recommend them im always willing to try

oh btw we seem to have very similar physical stats like weighing 80kg whats your lifts like ?

Yeah use about 20% of your max back squat for the weighted jump squats and aim to be explosive with that weight. My vertical jump is noticeably higher to.

Um Best lifts so far are:
Bench press: 140kg
Back Squat (High bar): 175kg
Front Squat: 165kg
Trap Bar Deadlift: 220kg (Like on my avatar)
Power Clean & Push Press (Not Squat Clean & Jerk) - 110kg
Snatch High Pull From blocks - 115kg
Barbell Deadlift - 200kg (Havenā€™t Done a barbell deadlift since the first half of last year)
Nothing too impressive but decent I suppose lol and my weight is hovering below 80kg now adays because Iā€™m aiming to get leaner. Tbh I only started squatting again 4 months ago as I was using the trap bar deadlift as my main leg lift but It didnā€™t do anything have any transfer to my squat at all. I was following CTs layer system at the time which is an awesome program to increase strength fast.

Nice man, I need to start deadlifting again so I can keep up with everyone else lol. I think Its awesome youā€™re nearly lifting as much as me despite not training as long as I have. Iā€™m currently 18 and I have been training for about 4 years. The first 2 years was spent at my school gym, but the crap thing was I was limited to train 3 days a week with 30 minutes of my lunch break and my workouts was the typical ā€˜bro kindā€™ curls, bench etc. But the last 2 years were my serious training years which has given me a huge percentage of my gains.

thankyou my friend it means alot , yeah love deadlifts myself its always come easy unlike squats haha , ah im 18 in 2 months, oh yeah show muscles guns haha well i was quite lucky my gym is like mainly olympic lifting kind of anti bro which was good starting out :stuck_out_tongue: ah what dya train powerlifting mainly ? or a mix and if you dont mind asking your goals? cause where im from not alot of guys my age are serious about training which is odd

Haha nice I wish I started out in the same place you did, especially when you have teachers telling you not to squat deep because it will cause injuries to your knees or deadlift too much because you will mess up your back. Iā€™ve been training to be strong & explosive for the last year but now I want to try something different now to mix things up and try bodybuilding. Iā€™ve started ā€˜cuttingā€™ in the last 6 weeks because I didnā€™t pay too much attention to diet so Iā€™m carrying a fair bit of extra flab. I will still incorporate explosive & strength work because I love simply love lifting heavy shit lol. What are you goals right now? Any numbers youā€™d want to hit on your big lifts by the end of this year?
