Tips and Tipping

Counter-rant: Has anyone else noticed this country is run by a bunch of retarded 15 year old kids who expect tips just for showing up to work?

Hell one of my good friends is 26 and graduated with a Bachelor in Business Admin. back in DEC. He STILL doesn’t have a job, and constantly bitches about not being able to find “the job he deserves.” He seriously fucking thinks that his generic degree (that took approx. 7 years to complete, along with no real work experience) will qualify him for, at the minimum, a CEO job paying 6 figures. I have emailed him a few jobs within the company I work for, and each time he replied that the salary is too low or the job is below him. As a matter of fact, why the fuck am I friends with this guy? Fuck him.

Way to ruin a friendship, Lifty.

Haha…that reminds me of this guy I know. He thinks he deserves a six-figure-paying job just because he’s taken a few training classes and has some certifications. He has no real work experience in the field and doesn’t have a degree either. He just thinks he’s entitled to them just because.

I remember thinking this way when I first graduated from college. Fortunately for me, I have enough self-respect that I loathe mooching off my parents, so I pretty much stayed employed in shit jobs from the day I graduated. It’s been good for me.

Don’t be too hard on him. It sucks to be bitch-slapped by reality. He’ll eventually come to the realization (if he hasn’t already) that one’s pride doesn’t replace hard work and experience.

Well Fuck, you should have told me that before I shot him in the face with a small caliber handgun.

No no that’s good, it’s all part of his reality call.

…Wait is he dead!!!

Is this from Scrubs? I remember an episode about Dr. Cox having a tip char and saying something like that to the person who gave him his coffee. I always get excited when I know a quote…then again maybe I should be ashamed of being so dorky.
Ha. Nah, it’s based on Family Guy when Quagmire, Peter, Cleveland and Joe are playing that drinking game. The things Quagmire has done… that guy is my hero.

There is nothing elitist about paying someone for a well done job. As a matter of fact the reason why service is so AWESOME in the US and SUCKS donkey balls every where else is precisely because of the almighty tip jar.

I bet you have no problem sliding a dollar into a strippers thong, you hypocrite.

I’ve never been to a strip club.

That’s why I’m not qualified to do anything and yet they still let me design massive structures where people are going to live.

The world is funny like that.

No, he’s a guy. Serially.

Once again, while I have gone off topic a little, my main focus was tipping at non-traditional places like the movies and department stores. I think putting a “tip jar” up is a crock of shit.

I’m shocked it hasn’t happened at a place like Bally’s or other big chain gyms. I mean someone has to sit at the front desk and play Solitare on the computer.
sorry for the hi-jack man. i totally agree w/your view on tip jars.

No prob at all, hell I got off topic too!

Just didn’t want people thinking I didn’t tip in a traditional sense.

What? That’s insane. That’s impossible.

Oh god. Oh my god. I’ve got all these magazines. Oh god.

I only skimmed through most of the posts here, and it seems as if the main point of tipping has been missed:

Tipping promotes a self competition to do the best job possible… Do a good job and get a good tip, do a shitty job and get a bad tip.

As a waiter you actually worry about whether or not you do a good job serving people… Getting enough refills, getting sauces quickly, getting problems fixed fast, getting the order correct.

Take away the tips and you take away the incentive to do a GREAT job, and you are left with people who do the bare minimum. Need a refill…Eh, who cares. You want some extra ranch… Eh, I’ll get to it when I get to it.

I’ve heard from a number of people that service in England is lackluster because of the tipping system… There isnt one.

I dont know that every job on the planet needs a tip jar, but if you take away the tips from jobs where you are basically reliant on service for everything, the experience will diminish considerably.

And as far as people doing shit to people food for bad tips, I’ve never seen it happen in my restaurant in almost 5 years, and would strongly discourage it were I to witness it about to take place. That sounds like bullshit 15 year old crap.

For all those “Fuck that, I don’t tip!” people; you do realize that sometimes there are “consequences” shall we say for the lack of tips? I’ve never been one of the people to spit in other people’s food, but I’ve bore witness to many things much worse back when I worked in the service industry.

There was a restaurant in our town that got in serious trouble a few years ago because one waiters got caught pissing in the soups of the people who gave shitty tips. (a la Fight Club) He admitted to doing it for over a year.
On a related note, I’m assuming everyone here has seen the movie “Waiting…”.

I get what you are saying, but most jobs are based on service whether it is to a customer or to their boss or another department. If you aren’t a good employee someone will complain and they should. Some folks may fly under the radar but it will come back to you and be reflected in your pay.

I fill out forms, type, answer phones, process paperwork, … no tip jar. This is all providing a service to someone. I still do the best job I can because it is the right thing to do… even with no tips.

Sure, but do you qualify for bonuses at your job? A bonus is the same thing as a tip.
