I only skimmed through most of the posts here, and it seems as if the main point of tipping has been missed:
Tipping promotes a self competition to do the best job possible… Do a good job and get a good tip, do a shitty job and get a bad tip.
As a waiter you actually worry about whether or not you do a good job serving people… Getting enough refills, getting sauces quickly, getting problems fixed fast, getting the order correct.
Take away the tips and you take away the incentive to do a GREAT job, and you are left with people who do the bare minimum. Need a refill…Eh, who cares. You want some extra ranch… Eh, I’ll get to it when I get to it.
I’ve heard from a number of people that service in England is lackluster because of the tipping system… There isnt one.
I dont know that every job on the planet needs a tip jar, but if you take away the tips from jobs where you are basically reliant on service for everything, the experience will diminish considerably.
And as far as people doing shit to people food for bad tips, I’ve never seen it happen in my restaurant in almost 5 years, and would strongly discourage it were I to witness it about to take place. That sounds like bullshit 15 year old crap.[/quote]
I get what you are saying, but most jobs are based on service whether it is to a customer or to their boss or another department. If you aren’t a good employee someone will complain and they should. Some folks may fly under the radar but it will come back to you and be reflected in your pay.
I fill out forms, type, answer phones, process paperwork, … no tip jar. This is all providing a service to someone. I still do the best job I can because it is the right thing to do… even with no tips.
