Who else is outraged that Starbucks actively solicits for tips now? They are doing nothing more that what there job description is. But should they deserve a tip for doing there job? They do nothing extra.
I don’t get Starbucks a lot but yesterday I walk in and place my order. The barista says “ a screen will pop up encouraging you the leave a tip before the payment screen”. I wanted to ask her why she is basically asking me to pay even more for my overpriced coffee but kept my mouth shut. I click no tip on the screen and proceed to wait for my coffee. I get the coffee and walk out the door. I take a sip when I get in my truck and it’s not even what I ordered. Didn’t order anything complex. Venti blonde roast with almond milk and sugar free vanilla. There was no vanilla.
At this point I’m pretty pissed(I know first would problem) but drive away and go about my day. Had a left a tip I would have lost my shit. Am I alone here?
Why is it people think they deserve a tip for simply doing there job? Why does Starbucks encourage this behavior by even having that screen on their pos system? Tip jar, fine. I’ll accept that but I think this is too much
They hire the employees with ads that listed 14-16 per hour but when they actually interview and start them, they tell them it’s 10-12 per hour with an extra 3-5 dollars as per credit card tips. It allows employers to pay their employees less. Caveat is it’s not entirely a trick, a lot of employees end up making an additional few dollars an hour from this per week depending on the business.
Starbucks isn’t really the vibe for tip solicitation but I understand why they push it as they’re the premium fast coffee chain. I will tip if they’re personable and seem genuine but if it’s an absolute shit show or a run of the mill boring service, I won’t.
We don’t have a Starbucks but Subway and Sonic do. It’s annoying AF!
When Jed gets a gift card it takes twice to ring it up so they can mention the tip option. Poor things don’t understand the concept of a cash tip. Just put it in your pocket and STFU.
I did not want the sour old bitch in the back to have any of it because she almost had a stroke when I asked if they had any cookies.
Im pretty fed up with the whole tipping concept now in most places…
Especially now since im now seeing the 22% tip option now.
My current partner is really big on me being generous and tipping no less than 20%. Otherwise im some tight cheap ass.
As she puts it the waitress depends on those tips. BUT …I have a issue when I go a little extravagant and take a group of us out to say celebrate a birthday for one of my sons. This can include both sons any girlfriend and myself and partner and at least one of hers.
So it can get a little pricey. Than you throw in the added 20%. One time this happened and the tip was more than my own hourly pay.
I get the server need to make a living also… but God Damn , they might have actually put in 10-15 minutes of direct work for our table when we where there. Yet morally im expected again to cough up more than my own hourly pay .
I’ve been to several restaurants now where the waitress or waiter hands you the actual payment unit and 25% is selected. You gonna have to decide if 22 or 20 is your choice. I’ve always tipped 20% and I thought that was high.
When tips become an entitlement I am much less interested in being involved. You have most likely had a server who “just” managed to do the minimum to get the job done. And you have most likely had a server who was all you expected and much more. “Entitled” has no place as a tip, IMO.
25% tips for service are approaching ridiculous cost value, especially in the restaurant business. So, 20% of the total “out the door” payment goes to the server as pure profit. The remaining 80% goes to keep the doors open, and the server’s hourly wage is a component of that 80%. You can itemize the list of costs the keep the doors open.
But the difference is a waitress/waiter at a sit down restaurant is actually doing something other than cashing you out and possibly making a drink. Agree that the pre selected tip options are rediculous.
Again, we need to differentiate. This post is about starbucks/panera/fast food type restaurants. Someone who takes my order and hands me a beverage is doing the job they are hired to do. In no way are they enhancing my experience at that establishment. In fact it’s the opposite. The person behind the counter could be the nicest most pleasant person to deal with but the minute they solicit a tip from me they have just ruined the experience.
Fair enough, but I could say volumes about Starbucks - some good, most not.
Occasionally, my wife likes to eat pizza. We get a pickup pizza from Jet’s Pizza. They have a tip prompt tablet. One of the tip options is 5%. That seemed reasonable enough to me. My guess is that they distribute the daily tips among the workers.
I agree. I do sometimes tip at these establishments but when an employee actually has the balls to tell you about the tip that is a whole other level of entitlement.
What irritates me is when gratuity is automatically added, but then there is still a tip line to fill, and they’re hoping you don’t notice the additional charge.
Tipping as whole should be abolished.
They even have an offer to tip when you self-order at the kiosks.
I get that. If the tip automatically is added to the bill, and the server expects an additional tip, the service had better have greatly exceeded what is expected.
Sorry I did understand I was just expanding on tip culture. I usually throw a buck to the Starbucks workers out of feeling obligated. Now all the fast casual places where there is no server are doing it. No personalized service should be no tip.
