Tips and Tipping

I don’t want to chit chat with my server, I’m there to eat, not meet new people. And a good server should recognize that. Good servers adjust their service style to the customer. Bad ones don’t.

I do agree that the price would go up, although not triple.

I didn’t say the price would triple. Their wages would have to triple in many states just to reach minimum wage.

Pay these people for a typical labor job. No one tips care takers for the elderly on a daily basis. Now that’s a hard job, cleaning up after people (who the hell wants to change diapers?), bathing people, feeding them, carrying them etc. These people get payed very little for a MUCH harder job than working in a restaurant and aren’t tipped.

Then perhaps these people should get a job in a restaurant.

Too much double standard BS going on. While we’re at it why not tip a doctor or a police officer in relation to a life saving act. Oh wait… they make too much money. I’d think tipping for good medical care would outweigh good service at a restaurant since poor medical care can easily result in death, ask any ER doctor about medical negligence.

Like Mr. Pink said, you tip these guys, but not these guys… And that’s the point. There is way too much double standard tipping going on. I’m not responsible for anyone’s career choice, so why should I be responsible to pick up the slack for a lack luster pay check that you get for lack of an education?

So what if there’s a double standard? There’s double standards everywhere. Some jobs pay more than others. It doesn’t mean one is harder than the other. That’s life.

And you keep bringing up lack of education. Are you insecure? You sound worried that a waiter with only a GED might be making more money than you?
I’m still in college, but I work in a medical research lab and have a job lined up for me so clearly, I’m not insecure about my level of education at all.

Whats up with the personal attack? I didn’t attack you. We don’t agree, but its uncalled for.

I have to agree with Synthetickiller and Octobergirl on this one. Employers should pay for wages not me directly. If you do a good job, the company can give you a raise, if not you get fired; Tough shit.

While I do tip for food service, I hate when waiters/waitress say “I live off my tips, I make $2.15/hr,” what the fuck does that have to do with me? Would you listen to a father of four bitch about what he makes if his job was a Part Time lifeguard only during the summer? Hell NO!!! You would say, “Get another damn job, ain’t my problem.”

No offense to anyone in the food service industry, just my worthless $.02

You gotta tip unless the service is bad.

Cut the macho “I don’t care what anyone thinks of me” bullshit. Like it or not, you need to make good impressions on people in the real world.

So I think it’s a good idea to always tip in the neighborhood of 20% when you’re out on Business, out on the first few dates, or out in an otherwise unfamiliar situation where you’re with people who are still shaping their opinion of you.

If you’re out with people you know, then tip what’s deserved.

Avoid situations where people at a hotel or something are handling your luggage. But if they grab hold of it, I think 5 dollars is a fair tip since 1 dollar is kind of a joke and 2 dollar bills are hard to come by.

Tip the cab driver. If you’re in a cab you’re in a big city. It’s expensive living in a big city.

I don’t know what to say about tipping bartenders. I guess if you want to establish yourself as a regular then it’s a good idea to get on the bartender’s good side and ensure fast service the next time you come in.

Gas is gonna be over $6.00 when McCain starts his first term in 2009 and continues Bush’s economic policies whether you like it or not. Don’t waste any of your money in tip jars. You’ll need it to save up for a fuel-efficient Vespa Scooter.
Where I’m from, no one tips the bartenders well - so I’d usually give a BIG tip for my first drink …and then every drink thereafter is mostly booze. Saves you money in the long run, and the girl gets more money.

Thanks Chewie, srry I rehased your thread. For the record I agree with you. Next time I will actually use the search function instead of ignoring it.

It is all good.

I was actually glad to see that this came up again.

You know what really pisses me off is when your at a bar and the bartender automatically puts your change into the tip jar. If its like 1 or 2 bucks, whatever, but at least let me put the money in there.

This other time, I was expected to get $8 bucks in change, so again, this bartender throws the change in the tip jar. I got really pissed off and mad that I just reached into the jar and got my change back. Shit, maybe if your some hot model or something, but just for 3 bears, fuk that.
That is called stealing. You should have gotten his/her name and told the manager. It would’ve required you to call the next day to avoid the bouncers and getting in trouble for being drunk.

Stealing should be punished.

Fair enough. I didn’t mean to make it personal. Some people get very heated when it comes to tipping and I guess I just don’t understand it. I don’t mind it. Tipping doesn’t bother me.

When did tipping a hair-dresser/barber become the norm? At least in a restaurant, you’re tipping for good service in addition to what you’re paying for the meal. When I get my hair cut, I’m paying for the service. I don’t see why I’m supposed to tip on top of that.
OctoberGirl wrote:
I ignore the tip jars popping up all over the place.

I do tip at restaurants or bars but I would prefer just paying more for my meal, have the wait staff make a set hourly wage, and me not having to put down a tip.

I also tip my bartender really well for the first drink.

I hate when skycaps grab my bag and if they do that without me asking I do not tip.
Agree completely.

Tipping is the most American thing one can do. If you love America tip often and tip well when you get good service. If you hate America never tip.

If you don’t tip, the terrorists win, asshole!

it’s a free market system and this is the system we have.

all of this shock and consternation over tipping is such a crock of posing. i mean jesus christ this is nothing new. it’s not like tipping began this year. tipping has been the system since before every person on this board was born. probably centuries before.

tipping is how it’s done here. yeah wouldn’t it be great if restaurants just charged more like they do in europe blah blah blah. well we don’t. get over it. tipping is the custom here. tipping is polite.

everyone who goes into a restaurant knows that tipping is part of the deal. everyone. don’t tip and you’re the one breaking the deal and people will think you’re an asshole. if you’ve got no issue with that then so be it, but you can’t have it both ways. you don’t get to not tip and not be an asshole.

waiters and waitresses have salaries based on getting tips…some places it part of the bill…ill tip them when they are nice and helpful. I will not tip someone who rings up your clothes and gets 10$ an hour (waitresses get 4.50) I will not tip someone for handing me a movie ticket… I will tip the pizza guy because he pays for his gas and gets minimum wage.

certain jobs are paid based on tips… thats why places like big y wont let employees accept tips (if i get a job there I will be…fire me if want I dont care )

No, I meant if we don’t tip we’ll end up with a country with shitty service, like France.

Tipping makes the services we get to experience in this country so much better. How else do you expect the pizza delivery guy to give service with smile at 3am having to up with drunk douchebags if not for the expectation of a tip?

Most barbers/hair-dressers don’t work for themselves. Most of the cost of cutting your hair is going to go to the salon/barber shop where they work. And as usual with all things tip related, you tip for quality, friendliness and speed.

Exactly. I wish more service jobs had low pay and relied on tips.

Strip clubs have the right model. The strippers have to PAY the owner to work there - and make all their money on tips. Imagine how much strip clubs would suck if the strippers got a certain salary no matter what.

Once again, while I have gone off topic a little, my main focus was tipping at non-traditional places like the movies and department stores. I think putting a “tip jar” up is a crock of shit.

I’m shocked it hasn’t happened at a place like Bally’s or other big chain gyms. I mean someone has to sit at the front desk and play Solitare on the computer.

A tip jar only works if people actually think the service provided is worthy of a tip. I will not tip 15 yr old retards at a movie theater who cannot seem to get anything right. My question is why is there a tip jar at the concession stand and not at the ticket counter?

Counter-rant: Has anyone else noticed this country is run by a bunch of retarded 15 year old kids who expect tips just for showing up to work?

Hell one of my good friends is 26 and graduated with a Bachelor in Business Admin. back in DEC. He STILL doesn’t have a job, and constantly bitches about not being able to find “the job he deserves.” He seriously fucking thinks that his generic degree (that took approx. 7 years to complete, along with no real work experience) will qualify him for, at the minimum, a CEO job paying 6 figures. I have emailed him a few jobs within the company I work for, and each time he replied that the salary is too low or the job is below him. As a matter of fact, why the fuck am I friends with this guy? Fuck him.
