Tightness and Mild Pain in Mid Back

Lately I have had a feeling of tightness and dull pain in my back. It feels like the back of rib cage is where it hurts, and the pain is at its worse after I rerack the barbell when squatting. It feels like my ribs are getting compressed and it makes it difficult to breath too.

Does anyone know what this is or what I can do about it? Its bugging the hell out of me and I would love any feedback. Thanks!

Also It does not really hurt much when I am actually squatting or doing any other excersise, only immediately after. I also have pain taking a deep breath during the day, even before I lift.

just some ideas

subluxated rib? Do you have numbness in your little fingers?

Maybe rhomboid spasams?

cheers

X 2

Serratus posterior spasm?
Intercostal spasm? (ribs stuck together)

It maybe the muscles that are involved in breathing that are casuing you problems? Deep breathing after exercise will illicit a greater pain response as these muscles are brought into play more so than usual. This can be the result of trigger point activity, which can lead to muscles spasm. Intra abdominal pressure can stabilise these muscles / structures during lifts, but when the bracing action caused by the lift subsides, then pain is produced.

Just a few ideas…

thank you for the response, I think it might actually be breathing related, and what you have described about pain when the bracing action is ended makes a lot of sense

Also, I have pain in my lower back aswell even when doing certain non-back straining exercises and especially during something back intensive like deadlifts. This may be unrelated, but it seems to be coming from the same source.

Yup yup…

Highlander,

Find a good chiro? Good ones are hard to find.

How flexible are you pecs?

x3 (or 4) on the subluxed rib and finding a good chiro. I had pain breathing, coughing, and unracking/reracking barbells from squatting. i often found doing crunches with a quarter on my chest hurt the area as well.

wouldn’t hurt strengthening serratus either.

Does foam rolling the affected area hurt more than the rest of the back?
