Throwing Heavy Stuff Far

Here’s that set of 4 on the snatches from yesterday, a pr of sorts. They got progressively better until the 4th one. I like the third one quite a bit, but I could still be keeping the bar closer as it passes my knees (I think I need to start the hip extension a little sooner) and I need to keep my heels on the platform longer.

Not working, so subsequent youtube link:

You snapped that 3rd rep off some kinda pretty, Carl. Great work[/quote]

Yea…they all looked pretty damned good to me!

Thanks jw and dz. It’s as always a work in progress.

2/20

Squats: (132/4, (132/3)3
Couldn’t get the last rep on the last three sets. Will try again this week.

2/23
Snatch: 55/2, 66/2, 77/2, 90/1, 95/1, 100/1, 105/1, 97.5/1, 102.5/1, then three close misses with 107.5
Squat: (116/2)6
Bench: 72.5/3, 82.5/3, (92.5/3)3
Snatch High Pulls: (116/3)2

Snatches from yesterday’s session. Includes the closest miss at 107.5. The 102.5 (5th) was my favorite. Especially at the heavier weights, I still need to work on getting the bar closer to my thighs at the bottom.

Edit: Waits 15 minutes… still no video.

Didn’t feel like doing anything except snatches today, so that’s all I did. Eleventy million and twelve singles at 100kg. Missed the first two and third to last, but all of the rest were pretty good. Just how many and how good will have to have to wait until I see the video tonight.

Such speed.
your speed is amazing I could watch all day…

the olymipic lifting gym in Queens has the worst hours for me, but I need to get out there, what ever horrible form I have is probably getting worse.

regardless your speed is powerful and graceful
kmc

Thanks kmcnyc. Speed getting under the bar is a matter of timing and how hard you pull on the bar after the second pull is done. Too many lifters think of the part where you get under the bar as “dropping under”, when in fact you should be pulling yourself under as forcefully as possible. One secret on the speed is this: during the second pull, besides extending knees and hips, also start pulling with the arms.

With someone like me, seriously lacking in arm pulling strength, there is little visible effect (if you look very closely, you will notice a slight arm bend by the time the bar reaches my hips), but that way, there is absolutely no delay pulling under after the second pull is done. The moment I quit pushing on the platform with my feet is the moment the pull under actually starts. Then it just becomes a matter of timing with when the feet quit pushing on the platform.

Here’s how it actually happened.

2/25

Snatch: 55/2, 66/2, 77/2, 90/0, 90/1, 95/1, 100/0, 100/0, 100/1*, 95/1, 100/1*, 105/0, 95/1, 100/1, 105/0, 95/1, 100/1, 100/1, 100/1*, 100/1, 100/0, 100/1, 100/1*

The ones with the asterisks are on the video.

Thank you, I had to read that a few times… but its a great explanation.
it is almost like the “giant” in gymnastics
the pulling under

When I did these, I was one of the people who needed to stay with the dowel or broomstick for quite a while… I should do that again.

I use the snatch and the OH squat more as an indicator than actually trying to get good numbers or be strong in the lifts

they tell me right away what is tight,
or where I am weakest.

I need to get out to that gym in queens
lost battilion hall.

again really nice to watch.

The 107.50 looked there, so it is a mater of time, peaking and a little luck.

Your training recently seems to have picked up a little momentum again, not sure how you felt at the time, but from the posts you looked like you had hit maybe a very small wall after the comp.

It felt more like the Great Wall of China, but I seem to be slowly getting over it.

2/26

Clean and Jerk: 65/2, 80/2, 95/2, 105/1, 110/1, 115/1, 120/1, 110/1, 115/1, 120/1, 125/1, 127.5/.3

Just clean and jerk this day, the 125 was solid, the 127.5, I caught the clean, but my elbows dipped down at the bottom. Whenever this happens, I never get the jerk, so being the wimp that I can sometimes be, I didn’t even bother standing up.

3/2

Snatch: 55/3, 66/3, 77/3, 79/3, 80/3
Squats: (116/2)6
Bench: 72.5/3, 82.5/3, (87.5/2)3
Snatch High Pulls: (90/5)3

Gonna try mixing in some high rep low weight workouts. Seems that quickness and power increase when I do this.

3/3

Clean and Jerk: 65/2, 80/2, 95/2, 100/1, 105/1, (110/1)4
Front Squats: (105/3)3
Push Press: 65/3, 75/3 (80/2)3
Clean High Pulls: (105/5)3

Last two clean and jerks were very sharp. I’m going to go in on my off day and do some light snatch work. A disconnect between the way I pull doing high pulls and the way I pull doing the actual lift is developing. I want to try to correct this.

Nice work ,always a good read, its like a clinic.

kmc

Thanks kmc.

3/4

Snatch: 60/3, 70/3, (80/3)3
Cleans: 80/3, 90/3, (100/3)3

About half of these were actually what I wanted to do… just like a high pull until the pulling under phase.

So do you guys just put steel plates in your quads? I guess they just turn to steel after oly lifting for years? Jeez that’s fun to watch. Scared to try it, but it’s a great watch and read! Keep pullin Carl, and when’s your next meet? I can’t seem to back track at all…Little Z-man.

Yes we do. Although when it came time for me to have them installed, they only had bronze plates in stock. That explains my squat numbers. But either way, bronze or steel, it still makes airport security a nightmare.

By the way, once you have practice missing the lifts in various ways, it gets much less intimidating. You gain confidence that the weight probably won’t be bouncing off your head when you don’t make the lift.

Next meet is April 4th in El Paso.

3/5

Snatch: 60/2, 70/2, 80/2, 90/1, (95/1)10 missed #7
Bench: 72.5/3, 82.5/3, (87.5/2)3
Split Squats: 80lbs/6
Snatch High Pulls: (95/3)3

3/6

Clean and Jerk: 65/2, 80/2, 95/2, 100/1, 105/1, (110/1)4
Squats: (132/4)4
Push Press: 65/3, 75/3 (80/2)3

Very pleased with the C&J, and I got all the squats this time, although 133 would not have gone for 4 on the last set.

Only 4 weeks to go, so I’m starting to pay attention to body weight. Last few weighings have been from 86.8 to 87.5kg. Need to be 85 by April 4th.

3/9

Snatch: 60/3, 70/3, 80/3, (85/3)4
Squats: (116/2)6
Bench: 72.5/3, 82.5/3, 92.5/3, (97.5/2)4
Snatch High Pulls: (95/5)5

Didn’t miss any of the snatches. doing this lighter weight higher rep stuff is working the way I hoped. I’m getting back to where I miss very few of my snatches. Did stop squats today, where you pause for a second or two at the bottom. The stretch felt good. Other than that, pretty routine.

Looking good, “probably won’t”…that made me laugh! looking forward to you taking care of business in El Paso. Just wondering if you’ve got some other guys going too? An Oly lifting crew? Keep pushing it

No body else going, although I do look forward to meeting a few people from around the county who I have only met online.

Time to catch up on the log. Pretty mediocre results this last week:

3/10

Clean and Jerk: 65/2, 80/2, 95/2, 105/1, (112.5/1, 117.5/1, 122.5/1)2

Push Press: 65/3, 875/3, 82.5/2, 86/1,2,1,1
Clean High Pulls:(110/5)2 all I had time for

3/12

Snatch: 60/2, 70/2, 80/2, 90/1, 95/1,( 95/1, 100/1, 105/1) again, missed both 105s
Snatch High Pulls: (105/3)5
Bench: 72.5/3, 82.5/3, 92.5/3, (97.5/2)4
Split Squats (90/6)1 out of time

3/13

Clean and Jerk: 65/2, 80/2, 95/2, 105/1, 110/1, (115/1, 120/1, 125/1)2 missed both jerks at 125
Squat: 137.5/3,1,2 lost the groove on the first rep of the second set
Push Press: 65/3, 75/3, 82.5/3, (86/2)4

Well, at least the push presses got better.

3/17

Snatch: 60/3, 70/3, (75/3)2
Squat: (116/2)6 all reps were stop squats
Bench: 72.5/3, (82.5/3)2
Snatch High Pulls: (80/5)2

Quick and easy

3/18

Clean and Jerk: 65/2, 80/2, 95/2, (105/2)2
Push Press: 65/3, (75/3)3
Front Squats: (97.5/3)2 last rep of each set paused
Clean High Pulls: (100/5)2

Feeling tired. Only the squats and high pulls felt as easy as they were supposed to. Need to get better sleep.
