Thoughts on a Bulk

Okay - If I may resurrect this thread once more… I’ve been having second thoughts about the bulk, even though I’m a few days in. I’m just not lean enough to go on a bulk right now, I think.

I guess I’d like some opinions from fellow lifters rather than my family or friends that don’t know what they’re talking about, so I’m going to include a few pictures after this post.

Before any flaming or people getting on here telling me to V-Diet immediately, please understand that this is what I look like after I lost 140 lbs - this is sitting at around 215.

Anyway, I’d really like feedback, so I’m not wasting any more time trying to figure out if I should stay on my bulk or go back to (blech) dieting.

Alright, well I guess this is my front. What I have circled there is a lot of my loose skin, which I can manipulate fairly freely… which I’ll be demonstrating in a picture below.

Loose skin.

Actual fat on my belly.

Back.

Dude, again, congrats on the weight loss. Fucking awesome.

Just remember, gaining muscle takes a long time. For someone in your situation, it would be wise to eat a sufficient amount of food to grow and progress in strength, but there’s no need to overdo it.

It will take a lot more discipline than just winging it and chowing down on everything, but if you want to keep your body composition in check, its necessary.

Also, let’s just assume for a second that you get RIPPED.

Then, you go for your “bulk.”

I can almost guaran-damn-tee you that your visual fat gains will far outpace your muscle gains, and 3-4 months down the road, you’re not gonna look noticeably more muscular, but you will probably look fatter.

In your situation, slow and steady wins the race. I think you can start gaining now, but you need to do it nice and slowly. Keep track of your nutrition, as big of a pain in the ass as that may be, and add in carbs and protein in the morning and post workout.

Try to stay consistent for 2 weeks, and if you are not progressing in the weight room or the scale, add in a few more calories.

Do this for 6 months to a year, maybe take a small break for damage control fat loss, and resume.

5 years later, you’ll be a monster.

You and I are in the exact same situation. I lost about about 140lbs over a long time and now I’m trying to put some size on and I’m finding it hard to get out of the “keep calories low” mindset.

Good luck, if nothing else you’ll get a lot stronger.
