This Thing We Do

Hel, you asked about waves on one of the other threads. a bunch of us are doing Jim Wendler’s 5/3/1. the wave refers to the month you are in.

Great workout.

Found a high school I could throw at so got some good shot and disc work in yesterday. First meet is this Saturday. Looking forward to seeing a lot of the guys.

How about Don’t fug with the mail man.

Nice training Hel , how is your grip in the morning?
Mine is always feeble.

Have fun at the Meet this weekend

kmc

hel, good luck at the meet tomorrow.

Thanks Carl. Had a good turn out yesterday but a couple of the really good shot putters didn’t show which is why I did so good in it. Basically did what I set out to do and showed up. Loved the meet and the format. Nothing but throwing events, plenty of official, ran smooth. Plenty of water and fruit on hand. This was the 1st Annual for this meet but I think as the word gets around it will grow to be a biggy. Saw a lot of old friends and a bunch of new ones moving into the age group.

Notes of interest, probably mainly for Carl, Myrle Mensey, w60, set the American Record in the weight and superweight. Put one about 2" out of bounds that measured 4" over the world record. If you ever run into her at a meet she’s as sweet as they come but don’t let her hug you if you value your ribs. A kid from the U of Louisville who’s a Canadian was throwing to qualify for the University games up there. Needed so many meets with over 60m throws. Got a couple over it yesterday. They guy running the meet really knew what he was doing and put in a lot of effort. Even handed out some unique medals/key chains (picture provided, I hope).

Anyway, how’d I do?
weight throw = 12.96 = 1st
Super weight throw = 7.05 = 1st
shot = 13.17 = 1st (scoot, no rotation)
disc = 39.75 = 3rd
Only 1 turned on the weight throws.
Next meet is 6/6 so really need to get some throwing in.
Spending the rest of today at the Vets home. Big bro Remi is in charge of the Bar-B-Que out there so good eating today. Every one have a good day and take a minute to remember those who gave everything for this country.

Just showing up, at your first meet of the year, you better all your marks from last year. Maybe getting bit by a snake is a good thing. Very nice first meet.

Hel – very cool stuff. Congrats on the events!!!

x2 Great job, Hel. Good to see you back at it and doing well!

I’m with Carl - Hel, you give a whole new meaning to “snakebit”!

Congrats!

Happy Memorial Day to you, Hel.

Great job on the meet Harry. Sorry I didn’t get round to telling you before now. Looking forward to the June results.

just catching up brother… good to see you back in the swing of things, you ol’ snake charmer you!

Carl was right, did better than last year. Went in totally relaxed with no expectations and things went real good. As the day went on I started getting the old fire going again and my throwing actually got worst. Guess I’ll take a Valium before the next meet. Since I’m not sure where to post my work outs here’s some other stuff and I’ll put my workout in the other place.

In the “Just cause your paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you” category. I was in charge of the wood for the bar-b-que at the vets home yesterday. Getting a stack when, hello. Felt bad after I followed my natural instinct. As One of my thoughtful, feeling brothers, informed me “Dumbshit, it was only a rat snake”.

Better safe than sorry. There’s a reason we have a startle reflex at snakes and spiders…

Nice meet, hel!!! I see bigger & better in the near future…6/6 is right around the corner, man. I had to laugh about the Valium…the kid, travis who competed in the TSC is a thrower for a local college; he also needs something to calm him down so he can throw better…my wife gave him some homeopathic stuff…when she gets home, I’ll ask her what is was if you’re interested.

Love to know what it is Art. Got a couple of homeopathic practioners on my route. Gave me some onion based pills for hay fever one day. Don’t know if it was just a placebo affect or if they really worked but I cleared up in a few minutes.
Gonna have to change back to lifting nights and days off. The morning workouts and then all the walking in the heat are taking a toll. Still feel like my energy is a little low and I tire a little easier than I should.
After work today got in some highland training. Pictured is some of my equipment. 28# weight and 18# hammer. Though it may be hard to believe, both are home made.
Have to share these from some old friends of mine.
Bumper sticker being sighted on Marine vehicles in Afganistan. “Only God can judge the Taliban. We just arrange the meeting”.
T. B. Bechtel, a part-time City Councilman from Midland,TX, was asked on a local live radio talk show, just what he thought of the allegations of torture of the Iraqi prisoners. His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience.
HIS STATEMENT:
“If hooking up an Iraqi prisoner to a car’s battery cables will save just one Texas GI’s life, then I have just three things to say,”

  1. Red is positive,
  2. Black is negative, and
  3. Make sure his nuts are wet.

The hammer actually looks a bit like a hammer. I mean the kind you pound nails with. How does the rigid connection to the weight affect the feel when you throw it?

I especially liked the first joke.

It is a 8# sledgehammer with a 10# weight slid down the handle. My po man’s version of the highland hammer. The pix shows the one used in the game. You feel it a lot more in the shoulders and grip. There’s a lot more putting your strength into it as you can’t move your feet and generate the velocity you by turning you body with it.
