This Thing We Do

God Bless my friend. Give him a hug from the Missouri Mule and thank him from your crazy net buddy. Sometimes you guys tear a big fuck up, this would be one of those times.

Thanks Barry. It means a lot to be able to share with you guys. I’ve got a lot of friends but none of them who understand why we do this thing we do. Sometimes it just great to be able to say things with out always getting into the bullshit.

Colin, and anyone else reading this with someone “over there”, I hope you will be reunited soon and your love ones come home, if only briefly, safetly to you.

Home invasion! My house has been over run and we don’t even know when my son will get leave, yet. Mamas gone crazy(er). If there’s someone she hasn’t called she’ll probaly get around to you. Grandma’s just as bad. Great when everyone gets excited. One’s speaking german, one’s speakin Tagalog (philippino), one sister-in-law is speakin spanish and the rest are speaking bastardized french/english (cajun). What melting pot? I, being the man of the house, take the situation in hand. I sneak off to the gym.

The season approaches. Time to turn strength into force. Need to start concentrating on explosiveness over heavy lifting.

Great news hel320! You do sound very proud, as well you should be sir. And that’s some damned heavy lifting my freind, great job.

God Blees your son and your family. That is a melting pot brother.Your bench press strength is strong!!The training is looking great. Jimmy T

Thanks DZ and Jimmy.
Started the day with church and a breakfast that’s goin take draino to clear out of my arteries. Planned on throwing today but it started pouring. Went for a swim instead (indoor pool). Just in case the breakfast didn’t do the trick heading over to one of my brothers for chicken wings and other health food during the game.

Great news, man! Great news!

Pre workout thoughts/rants:

We will now start hearing the leg press sled referred to in much the same way as doing curls in the squat rack. I rarely venture outside the over 35 lifter part of this web site, mainly cause I’m old and grouchy. But in my infrequent visits I’ve notice it’s becoming the topic de jour to bash the leg press machine. Equally, the good ole back squat is getting a bad rep, too. I’ll be the first to agree the back squat when done wrong has been responsible for some screwed up bodies but I feel I must come to the defense of the leg press machine.

Oly lifting is all the rage. Hell, I’m trying to do front and over head squat. Do I ever think I’ll get to the point where it will give me the leg work out I want for what I do? No. This is the over 35 lifter forum and 35 still sounds young to me. But the body is getting set in it’s ways. Much as I’d like to think I can make my body do anything I use to it ain’t goin happen. Certain parts of the body ain’t going to do certain things no matter how much I try. I can stretch all day and the splits aren’t gonna happen.

What’s all this got to do with the leg press? Personally I get a hell of a work out using it. By varing my feet postion I can hit every muscle in the leg. I walk away wobbly. Is it the most effective leg workout there is. For me, yes. For someone who gets to the point they can go ass to ground, “or asian squat” with 400 pounds in the front, no.

Anyway, I’ll keep on trying the oly squats and maybe they’ll eventually click. Meanwhile they’ll have to carry the leg press machine out with me on it. Then I can lay down in the squat rack and do leg presses in between curls.

Just my thoughts. Like I said, I’m old and grouchy.

Started taking fish oil and a whey protein drink, vanilla flavor. Tastes like crap. Maybe I’ll add some tabasco to it:)

Off tomorrow so I’m hitting the gym a little late tonight. Need some advice from the more diet knowledgable.
Admittedly I have the worse diet of anyone I’ve seen posting on here. Typical workday meal.

breakfast: coffee
lunch or afternoon: sandwich/soda
before workout meal: fruit/coffee
After workout meal: full meal
go to bed
(I’m actually ashamed reading this.)

Just started taking fish oil and drinking whey 2 days ago. Been adding it to my coffee as a creamer. In all truth, I usually have a lot of energy, sleep great but not long. Never have. Here’s my question’s. When I ate like this I rarely got very hungry til the evening after my workout.

About a week ago I started to eat some breakfast so I would cut down on eating a big meal at night. Nothing fancy, cereal, Chex and low fat milk. Well, since I started eating breakfast I’m ravenous come mid morning. I mean hungry. My sandwich doesn’t even put a dent in it. The rest of the day I stay hungry, too. Any theories on why this is happening? Small animals on my mail route are no longer safe.

Hel320, don’t worry about the leg press thing sir. Just keep doin’ what works for you. About the diet, I would guess to say your body is processing your food quicker now. I’ve found that my body has become accustomed to more frequent meals, and I’m hungry almost all the time. I’ll guzzle some water to curb the hunger for a while, but every couple of hours I need to eat. On heavy workout days, I’m ravenous all damned day.

Hey buddy!! Don’t ever get tooo wound up in some of these a-holes. I can put together a leg press workout that would make most puke. My favorite is the toilet, pause, press. You bring the weight down until your ass starts to come up or your knees are at your chest, pause, explode. The curl thing in the rack is overdiscussed. I curl in the rack sometimes but not when it’s needed by someone. The best to the family.

Woke up the morning of the 6th at around 0330 to the sweet sounds of the Tornado sirens going off. Power went and then one big old cedar decided it would look better in my kitchen and another one took out my shed out back. Spent the rest of the 6th and yesterday doing a DZ type workout. Chainsaws, axes, and hauling lumbar off. Boarded up the hole in the house and finally got power back last night. Good to have lots of family around. Turned the whole thing into a cook out while we worked. Got to love the wife’s outlook. “Now we can add that breakfast nook I want right there”. Hope to get back to the gym by tomorrow. Guess I’ll be eating my breakfast in a new nook soon, too.

That is great news about your boy! OCS, you and I both know that is the way to go, although the NCO in me doesn’t think so, HAHA

Hug him hard for me when you see him and tell him I thank him for his service and sacrifice. When we were doing it it didn’t seem scary at all, just what we had to do when we put the uniform on every morning. Now that they are doing it, scares the crap out of me…

Aw, man. That’s rough. The closest I’ve come to that was Hurricane Alicia knocked down one of our walls back in the day. And then there was the whole Northridge Earthquake when we were absolutely, positively sure we were going to die.

All our best, man. And it’s great to see someone taking such a great “silver-lining” approach to something like this. Breakfast nook, HAH!

Amen, brother, Amen

When I heard about the storms rollin through that area, I wondered if any of my fellow gym rats and Jeepers (I’m also into Jeeping and am on a Jeep forum) were affected.

Who needs the gym after a w/o like that?

LOL! I agree, gotta love the wifes outlook!
hel, I’m happy to hear there was no worse damage, and especially that no one got hurt. And I salute your son, and am glad he’s returning to your family. And BTW, you can take him…

Thanks to all for the well wishes. I make a good living, got a wife I love who tolerates all my ways, wake up in my own bed every morning, I’ll see my son soon, got family all around me, and no one’s shooting at me. Life is damn good. A little damage to the house is a minor annoyance in the big scheme of it all.
Love to all and keep liftin’, cause it’s the thing we do.

Finally got back to the gym this morning. Felt so good I even got some throwing in after. Tried all dumbbells for a change up today.

Bench
50wu, 60x10,65x10,70x10,75x10,80x10
Low angle Inclines
50xwu, 65x10x3
High angle Incline
65x10x3
(damn but that pump the chest)

Stiff leg dead w/dbs
60sx8,70sx8,80sx8,90sx8
db sng arm lat pulls (new for me)
40xwu, 55x10x3ea
shrugs
75sxmax x 4

Different kind of workout for me. Really liked the dbs for chest because I tend to use the delts too much when benching. This really pumped the chest. Walked around the gym all swoll up. Hey, it was 4:30 in the morning and I was all alone.

Glad you all can get a new nook for the kitchen. That coulda been really bad hel320. Exactly why the wife and I left Oklahoma 10 years ago. Great workout!

Thanks DZ. Sometimes I just don’t get along real well with nature.

Clark AFB, Philippine Islands, Jun 1991- Mt Pinatubo, volcano, took most of our stuff. Wiped out Clark AFB. We were transfered to…

Homestead AFB, August 1992- Hurricane Andrew blew all our new stuff into the ocean. Wiped out Homestead.

Sent us to California. No earthquake while we there.

Both times I was on Search and Rescues when it hit our places. Wife evacuated herself and the kids while I had to stay behind looking for survivors. She doesn’t get upset real easy. Cést la vie.
I’m pretty sure she’ll get her nook.
