This Thing We Do

That sucked. Went to the gym in the morning. The best of Polkafest was playing over the speakers, there were rug weaving lessons being taught in the squat racks, two 80 pound 60 year olds were fighting over a crouton and an assortment of tofu was laid old on the benchs. One of the people came up to me and said “you’re not one of us, are you”?

Okay, a slight exaggeration, but that’s what the atmosphere felt like. Only one other guy was near the free weights and he was doing seated curls with some db so light it had a red covering on it and I could barely see it in his hand. When he got through he sprayed and wiped down the bench. I think he may have worked up a “glow”.

It’s bench day. Been a long time since I’ve been stuck under the weight and had to do the roll it down the stomach, hips, other parts thing. Ever the optimist, I ask Mr Best Biceps 2007 for a spot.
True conversation:
“Hey guy, could you give me a spot?”
“I don’t do that exercise.”
“You don’t have to do it. Just grab the bar in the middle and pull up if I can’t lift it all the way.”
“If you can’t lift it all the way, why are you trying to lift so much?”
“Your right man, let my ego get the best of me there. Thanks anyway.”

So I went for some reps.
Bench 135wu, 225wu, 275x6x3
(Kept one eye on Mr Biceps to make sure he didn’t try to hump my leg)
Incline Bench
135wu, 185x8, 225x6x3

Went and did some bent rows (butt against the wall)
135wu, 185x8, 225x6x3
Shrugs
225xmax x 3

Hit the showers, carefully

Most unsatisfying work out I can remember

I’ve incured a bad karma debt somewhere and I’m paying it off this week.
I didn’t spray and wipe my bench off, though!

Hi Hel320. I was wondering if you have ever use a balance board to work your leg stabilizer muscles. I have used it between sets for about thirty seconds at a time. Within days I could feel the results, I felt a lot more stable on the ground, and if someone accidentally bumped me there was little to no give.

I don’t know much about your sport of choice but I would think that having that solid grounding maybe of some assistance with your throws, just some food for thought. If you give it a try please let me know if helps or not. One more rep!

Morning work out. part duex,

I think today was some Vegan high holy day. The morning crowd had formed all the barbells into a pentegram and were praying to a stalk of celery in the middle. Two French poodles were leashed to the treadmills. Everyone was wearing togas and dancing to Donnie and Maria’s greatest hits. Then they all…

Ah, never mind. The atmosphere sucked again.
Are the moonies still around so I can join up?

Power cleans
135wu, 145x6x3
standing press
135wu, 155x8,175x6,185x4,205x4
steated db press

rear lat raises
35x8x4

Cheat curls to forehead
135x8x3
Alt hammer curls

Maybe I’ll be paroled soon

That’s funny shit hel320, I’ll bet they look at you funny.
I remember getting weird looks each time I put more than 135lbs. on a bar, and they would stare when more than 300 went on. Great work, and cool vid!

Day 3 with the morning crowd. I’m really starting to consider how I’d look in a lime green spandex pair of tights. I’ve also come to realize elevator music is a very under appreciated art form.

Leg Press-

CG Bench

Legs are starting to feel a little stronger

I guess I never really appreciated how much the atmosphere of where you work out effects your lifting. I’ve been really blessed to be able to lift with some big, strong, serious people. The last few days has really given me some respect for the dedication you guys (and women) lifting big and regularly at home or by yourselves have.

Okay, group virtual hug now

I here you hel320. I workout in the mornings, I walk into the gym with the headphones cranked, eyes straight head. I surround myself with serious attitude and dedication. No one talks to, if some one is yakking and I need to be where they are I just move in with out even looking at them. I just don’t have the patience any more, and I’m not going mess my thing up because of a bunch of yahwhos! They all probably have sweet nothings to say about me LOL!! Stay Focused Bro.

hel, Now that there is funny stuff, I don’t care who you are!!!
(Mental image of Lime green spandex under a Tartan Kilt…)

Impressive numbers, I look forward to the year I can post comparable numbers.
And yeah, workouts away from your ‘regular’ group suck.

Hel320…that’s hilarious big guy! Keep it up, you’ll survive.

After work yesterday

swimming - actually caught myself thinking about buying a pair of speedos

Last night - zydecko @ the Knights of Columbus. Nothing like a little dancin the day after a heavy leg workout but Mr Beam do seem to help out a little bit

Conversation with one old gent last night

“podna, why come you kee trin get big. Yo ain be no boug (boy)no mo”

“Guessin jus’ fray be a vieux (old man)”

“dat easy. Ke afta de young fille (women), ea good, dance, drink, you ne’er be a vieux”

The cajun workout - patent pending

Wow…just Wow, lol

My abs are achin’! had such a belly laugh reading your morning ‘adventures’ and actually bought back some similar memories(soap on-a-rope for the shower, lol) Nice to see you can keep a sense of humor while trying to get stronger in spite of your surroundings. Best to ya hel!

That was too fricking funny, I needed the laugh. You are right about commercial gyms, THEY SUCK!
Keep going big man and may the gods of Valhalla be with you.

My last day in purgatory has come and gone. I bid a tearful farewell to the morning crowd. I am now more in touch with my feelings and find myself a more loving and caring person. This alone has made the ordeal worth it. As a parting gift they gave me an autographed Susanne Summers Thigh Master. I lovingly gave them the finger, with feeling.

Tommorrow night - back with the regular crew

Odysseus returning to Ithaca(not New York), Napolean’s escape from Alba, David Lee Roth reuniting with Van Halen, The Police reunion Tour, all pale in comparison to my return to my evening lifting crowd. The smell of chaulk dust mixed with sweat and AC/DC blasting away welcomed me and said yes, you can come home again. My regular crew was gathered in the free weight area like a pride of lions awaiting the next kill. A welcoming cry went up as I approached.

Okay, they said “About f…ing time you got back”.

Now those are serious workouts. Atmosphere sure helps with your state of mind, and your state of mind reflects your workout. Great to hear your back in your game, give her hell Bro, this is for life.

Went straight from work today to one of the local High Schools to help with a little coaching. There were 12 throwers, a mix of young men and women. Group included a couple of newbies but the rest had thrown before. Had a great time. Nothing like teaching what you love to do to a group of enthusiatic youngster to get your own energy up. Always brings back good High School memories but damn, were we ever really that young?

Thats cool brother.Working with the youngsters is a thrill!!Yes we were that young too.I even had hair on my head. That post time stuff happened to me earlier in the week.

I can really appreciate your love for throwing. You should be complemented for helping the children. Sorry I have to have VH with Sammy, 5150 'til the wheels fall off and they have severals times.

Got one of those scary middle of the night phone calls last night. My wife hated them when I was in the service and now we both hate them. Real good news this time though. My boy is coming home from his second tour of Iraq. Heading to Lackland AFB to OCS and going to be a 90 day wonder (2Lt). Means he’ll probably head right back over to the AOR cause he’ll still be a PJ (pararescue). Guess he’ll get all big headed so I’ll have to take him out to the mats and (try) and show him who the alpha dog still is. Don’t know how he got past the commissioning screening, though. His ma and I were married when he was born.

Just read what I typed. Sorry for the milspeak but I just had to share.
