Thanks guys, enjoying the hell out of what I’m doing. Actually considered entering some master’s swimming meets but no way I could fit the training in for that. Do wish I could master position 102 from the Kama Sutra, though.

Got a confirmation on my highland games for 20 June. No master’s class so I’ll be in with all the younguns. So todays workout went:
5 throws for height, 56#
4 sheef toss 20# (sheef busted open, got to make a new one)
5 each 56# & 28# for distance
5 (approximately 20#) stone throw
Nothing real hard. Just getting the form back and the body ready for some harder throwing.
Made big wife points today. Drove her all over town, to the new mall, didn’t moan and groan, much, as she went store to store. Bought her lunch at the newest hot resturant and didn’t even make fun of our “server” even though I’m sure he bites the pillow. I was sorely tested, though, when he arched an eyebrow seeing my liberal use of Tobasco. Even let her pick out a video to watch tonight. Might need the Surge Recovery before the nights out. Gym tomorrow morning, see if I can get back to benching normal.

Still can’t get the thumb around the bar but it isn’t affecting the lifting much.
Funny how you can be working out and lazy at the same time. Just kept slapping 2 more tens on the bench each set instead of changing the plates out.
Question, anyone else using the Surge Recovery? I really like it and surprized I like the taste, too. But I swear it makes me sleepy. When I use it after my morning workouts I notice I get sleepy afterwards.
Figured it may be my body digesting it. Like after you eat a big meal. I’m not use to eating any breakfast so I thought that might have something to do with it.

Good lifting hel. I’m the only guy in my gym that does the same thing. All the young bucks like to change out the big wheels. I’m still not good at adding in increments of 45.

Being in with the younguns kind of puts it all in perspective doesn’t it.? I’m hoping that vicariously I can get a sufficient feel for highland games through your reports, so that I won’t actually have to go out and do one. I’ve been sorely tempted, but have so far managed to keep it at bay. I did a red dress run once. There’s something about wearing a skirt while doing athletic things that’s appealing, or at least silly enough to make you do things you would not otherwise do, like run for 5km.
How are the throws for height done? How does the sheaf toss work? Are the weight throws done the same as in field and track? How about the stone throw? Is it more or less like shot? I used to throw big waterlogged logs that my dog found on the beach, like cabers. Silly dog would then spend hours biting, licking, and barking at the thing, trying to bring it to me, so that I would throw it for him again.

Throws for height are done over a set of standards like a pole vault. Sheaf toss is a real kicker. Stuffed burlap bag thrown for height using a pitch fork. The weights for distance are done using only 1 hand, from a 9 foot sqaure. Most use a 2 turn running approach going from corner to corner. Discus type release but a lot lower towards the hip because of the weight. Stone throw is held one of two ways. First way you can move and then most throw it using shot put technique, glide and rotation. Other set of rules are feet planted and the it’s a power position throw only. Rocks are all different shapes and it’s a bitch getting them seated just right agaist your neck.
Didn’t pracice the hammer the other day because I broke my handle. Hammer, 4’ long shaft with 20# at the very end. You can’t move your feet at all. Swung around the head and released over the shouler. Some people even have a spike extending out the front of one shoe so they can dig it in and get and exaggerated lean back on the release. Caber equal killer. Points are awarded based on positions of the clock. You’re not judged on the distance but the way it lands. A perfect throw/score would be one filp, facing directly away from you at 12 oclock.
No points are given for best dressed and there are always some “ladies” who just got to look under the kilt. Not being of Scotish ancestary I usually wear a generic patterned kilt. One company jut came out with kilts in the using the branches of the military colors. Just ordered mine.
Joe, like the idea of the whey in the rocovery, going to give it a try.
Last night

Edit: Damn, I typed this very fast early this morning before work. Please forgive all the typos.
So I had this doctor’s appointment yeserday. As a military retiree I still use the medical facility on the local installation. We’re assigned a primary care provider who we see whenever we go. My old one left and I had my first visit with my new one. She is a civilian contracted by the military. I went because of chronic popping in my neck and my trap on one side feeling tight all the time. Visit didn’t go well.
“You’re a little over weight but your BP is very good and the last time your cholesterol was checked it was also very good”.
“What’s my body fat percentage?”
“I don’t know but based on the ideal weight for your height you could probably lose a few pounds”.
“Get right on that.”
“When did you first notice the pain you’re having?”
“It started a couple of weeks ago”.
“Have you done anything outside the ordinary?”
“Been squatting more lately, (puzzled look from her) type of weightlifting.”
“Are you lifting heavy weights?”
“Not by some standards”.
“I noticed in you medical history you’ve had an extremely high number of orthopedic problems. Lifting heavy weights could’ve lead to a lot of these.”
“Have you gone through my medical records?”
“No, I have a summary on the computer of past visits and what was done”.
“All my orthopedic problems were caused crashes and bullets, lady”.
At which point I walked out. Went to the patient affairs office. Fellow retired E9 runs it. Unloaded on the guy. Conversation started with, “Where the fuck do you get these…”
End result, referral to doctor off base who I’m assured is very good and use to be dealing with “guys like us”. And she ain’t my primary provider no more.
Prior to the appointment I’d done some squats, a weightlifting thing.
Damn, I’m getting grouchy in my old age.

hel320 is leading the “Grumpfest 2009”!! Good luck with the new doc. good ones are hard to find.
And why does everyone want us to look like marathoners?[/quote]
Hey, at the American Masters a few years ago, I was told I looked like a “damn marathoner”. I’ve never recovered. Looking at pictures though, I guess he was right.
hel, all that really matters is how far, or how high they go, or in which direction they are pointing when they land. Anyone who doesn’t understand that is not entitled to an opinion. I hope the new doc has some sense.
It
took a very cool no nonsense Dr. here to give me any faith in the medical community.
I went to school at first to go into PT…
till I got my first grades.
I am amazed at how little the medical industry understands the body
hopefully youll find a Dr. you like.
Eco, funny thing is there are 5 massage therapist on my mail route who have all offered me “freebies”. And I mean real message theropy, not the other stuff (I think). The military still refuses to use chiropractors or to refer patients to them. So I may just go ahead and pay for one myself if the visit with the new doc doesn’t work out.
Carl, I don’t mind someone throwing farther than me. It just when they throw farther and look like a (shutter) runner that it really hurts.
Last night, different kinda workout
DB, Squat to overhead snatch (grab db between legs with both hands, snatch to overhead, for caber toss)
85,90,95,100 x8
Dbs, from hips, dip and snatch to over head (kinda like power front delt raises to overhead, weight for height)
45,50,55,60 x8
Cable reverse chop from floor (sheef toss)
50,55,60,65 x8
face pulls (for my face:))
90,95,100,110 x8
rear lat raises
35x8x4
Trying for explosiveness so I was doing each set as fast as possible. Workout definitely wore me out.
