This Thing We Do

hey Hel…I am kind of new to the forum and wanted to say hi as your log was the first I read on here. I used to fantasize pressing and pulling the big #s you do when I am your age…also quite some funny post too, especially the one you had about what you saw on TV when you took the day off…cracked me up so please keep it up…cheers!

Still doing them seated Geech. Standing I end up leaning way back.
Thanks ff. Been looking in on your thread. Very well thought out. 100 squat sessions in ayear is a hell of a goal.

After today I’ve got 4 straight days off. Planning on lifting everyone of them. Need to finish up a little Christmas shopping but that’s about it. So to all, a politically correct holiday greeting:

Best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral, winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most joyous traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, but with respect for the religious persuasion of others who chose to practice their own religion, as well as those who chose not to practice any religion at all. Additionally, a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted year 2009, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures, whose contributions have helped make our society great, without regard to race, creed, color, religion or sexual orientation.
(Disclaimer: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, no responsibility for any unintended emotional stress these greetings may bring to those not caught up in the holiday greeting.)

I never thought of doing face pulls seated. Generally I have to lean back so the weight doesn’t jerk me forward. That might help a bit.

Good idea.

That’s not funny. So why am I laughing so hard.

Hel thanks for the comments on Carls page, I am up to page 9 of your blog so will catch up again in real time soon.

and yep Jim Whitenhall is a bear. Other master to impress me (apart from Carl who I am still trying to get my head around), was George Mathews who I met in 2007, had never seen anyone mid 60’s look that physically strong, before.

Our 60 yr master throwers even some of our ex Olympians have lost so much muscle mass. George throws the 44lb 10m+. A few cms better than I do. Hard to get complacent.

I am enjoying your log a lot.

What I have found to help me is to try and keep my head near where it needs to be rather than where others try to put it.

If I don’t think I am old and don’t think the weights I am lifting are heavy, then I find it easier to progress. Blogs like yours and Carls are a great help. Being around others who lift more and throw farther, is great for my head.

Guess I need to stop thinking and just add some more weight to the bar.

I want to call you a really ugly name after seeing that pie. Looks like the ones my Granny would make. I miss her and her pie…

Yum! Pecan pie is my favorite!

No pecans in my yard, but I had a bumper crop of chestnuts! Way more work than pecans, for sure.

I cheated Capy. Shelled the first 2 cups I needed and took the rest to the farmer’s market. They shell them for $0.35 a pound.

How many highland games have you competed in Hel? I decided to enter 1 or 2 in '09 (they have some smaller local ones). I don’t have enough overall strength yet to do a strongman, although I will go watch one this year and see what they are all about. At least in the higland games, I’ll be able to pick up the implements! Guess I’ll need to buy me one of them dresses! is a pushup bra appropriate for a highland games?
