I bet your persistence and patience (something we older fellows need to have in spades: also when recognizing that not everyone is going to pay attention to our good advice) are going to win out in the long run.
Hel you must be tired of me butting in, but have you considered using DMSO on the joints to speed along mobilization?
It helps soften fibrous tissue and scarring, is non-toxic and has the added benefit of making your breath smell like you’re going out to do battle with vampires (garlic).
I’ve used it in the past with no problems and it’s a complete coincidence that my son has that third testicle.
Hel,
The workplace discussion regarding health/fitness/nutrition is always the best! I tell people I get up at 3:30 AM to workout and they look at me like I am crazy. They don’t understand how anyone could want to do this. I just walk away so that I don’t say anything nasty. What I really want to say is, “Go ahead and eat your dounuts, drink your Coke, and sit on your ass all day long, and see what it gets you.”

Hell if we were worried about anyone butting in we shouldn’t be posting parts of our lives on here for the world to see and comment on.
DMSO, I do remember the garlic breath. Can’t get that in most states can you? Or do you get it from vet suppliers?
Yeah Geech, I can be a stubborn SOB.
Mday, wait til you start competing and you won’t believe the comments you’ll get. Usually I just blow stuff off but postal supervisors are the reason carriers go postal.

Pouring down raining right now so should be a great day at work.
Went to throw this morning as the sun came up. There was fog so thick couldn’t see where the disc were landing. Shots were sinking a good couple of inches into mud. Just my little piece of heaven. Loved it,had a great workout.
Just don’t understand wives. Mine has stood by me through thick and thin, all manner of disasters and calamities. But try and get one little hug when I come home covered in mud and drenched with sweat and she turns a garden hose on me. Love is fickle.
Everyone have a good Father’s Day.
Worked
Lifted - heavy and fast
Sleep now
hel,
Been quiet for a stretch; just checkin’ in to see what you’ve been up to over the last week or so. Looks like things are shifting more to the throws and their drills and slightly less training, yet the training is still looking OK. I guess you are looking for that balance bet the two; I wish i could offer you a solution, but you are better versed in that than I. How if at all, do you incorporate any plyos? I know they can be hard on the body and it is hard to train, throw, plyo and still function all day at work and home. Maybe specific drills that give you the greatest carryover with the least wear-and-tear(most bang for your buck!) I’ll be curious to hear your response, till then take care and keep up the nice stuff you’re doing!
Great stuff hel! That’s funny you mention the wife, mine does the same thing to me. Points me towards the door like the pooch when he’s been in the mud.

The lifting does suffer in season. Young throwers can manage lifting and throwing on the same day but its just too much strain on the body for us older guys. Even the young studs cut back on their lifting intensity during the season. Last 2 seasons I’ve gone through the I’m getting weaker and wasting away thought process. Kept up my regular lifting schedule and my form suffered. This year I’m sticking to more throwing and less lifting. Seems to be working this year but I still keep having the “I should be lifting more” thoughts.
As for plyos I do some everytime I time I throw. Maybe not technically plyometrics but I either do hurdle hops or sets of real short sprints from blocks. On the hurdle hops I use 5 hurdles in a row and just hop over them. I also have other things like backwards over head shot throws from a squat and toe board pushups with a clap I do for explosiveness.
Yesterday, after work, lots of throwing.
Meet is this coming Saturday. Hope to get in one more lifting and one more throwing day before that.
Today:
Last lifting day prior to meet
Lots of stuff x much weight
Ate food
Will sleep
Plan on throwing tomorrow
Hope the last day of throwing gives you a good indication of how things might go this weekend. If things get busy tomorrow, i want to take the time today, to wish you luck in the Meet. I hope the things you have been working on kinda come together and manifest itself in some extra distance.
We’re accustomed to 1st, bring home the gold!!
That’s what I like. No pressure. I’m as ready as I’m goin be. Based on my highly scientific aand extremely complicated practice to meet calculator I’m hoping for 2 PRs. If I’m throwing x in the shot, add at least 3’ for a meet, add 10’ for the disc. I never throw near in practice what I throw in meets. Guess I need an audience.
Last practice after work today. Feeling better with moving faster. Plan on going balls to the wall Saturday and seeing what it brings.
Good luck with the meet. I can’t wait to read of your accomplishments.
Hel, about time I join the party here and wish a fellow thrower good luck. Always remember the golden rule, get in a fair throw without fouling on your first attempt before going aggressive.
It was fun reading about your thoughts about decreasing lifting before meets, which we all had to do reluctantly. I used to get paranoid about losing strength also, even when I was 22! Its probably a bigger issue for us older guys, but what I learned by my tenth and final year of throwing was that I decreased volume but not intensity, and as a result I kept my peak strenth. The last two months of season I would only do power cleans, squats, and incline/regular benches. Of course, keep in mind I was a power cleaning nut and I went balls to the wall on that until the day I graduated college.
Oh, btw, regarding your comment about doing a little bodybuilding and how much it reduces strenth (on QT’s thread). DONT DO IT. I did this every summer, “cutting up” from my end of season bulked up weight of 275 or more down to 230ish to look pretty for the ladies. (Actually, just to even get a date lol) I would typically lose 15% of my strength or MORE. My biggest regret. Doc
Thanks Doc. Not sure I could ever pull off the dieting necessary. Looking for some other stuff to get into so I definitely want to keep my strength levels up.
Meet prep after work today:
Gas up car (ouch!)
Assemble equipment
Wash balls and disc
Load car
Super secret recipe spagetti dinner
Hot bath
Video with wife
Sleep
Suppose to rain tomorrow so it could be interesting
Good luck on the meet hel. Give it to 'em
Tear it up hel!
Stick with the “I may not not be who you want but I’m all you want.” Bring home the gold.
