This Thing We Do

That’s incredible, one block huh? I’ll bet it was all you could do to keep from giving her some advice.

Naw, DZ, wasn’t hard at all. Not a chit chat kind of relationship. She sits there with a clip board and makes notes. I do my deliveries. One big happy family.

Anyway, mananged to get some throwing in yesterday. Ht and I have been having some discussions on throwing and I’m trying to implement some of what we’ve discussed. Tried to work on form only and not give in to the urge to throw as hard as I can. Worked pretty good, too.

Yesterday, after work, worked with the college throwers. Lot of leg work on the track.
Overhead backwards shot throw 10 (works lower back explosiveness)
5 x 30m from blocks
5 x 5 hurdle hop (line up 5 hurdles in a row, stand directly in front of the first one, hop over all 5 in a row)(oh yeah, low hurdles)
5 x 50m Twirls (continuous discus spins for 50m)

Power clean
135, 185, 225x5x5
High Pulls (something tells me I need to work on my technique with these. Hit myself in the chin)
135x5,155x5,175x4,185x3
Power snatch (speed work)
135x3x3

rear delt raises
35x8x4
alt hammer curls
45x8x4

Hel - all you guys constantly keep me in awe and demonstrate just how ignorant I am on these lift variations. I’m off to figure out just what some of these lifts look like…

Great work hel! Don’t feel bad, I hit myself in the nose one day doing cleans and jerks too. Didn’t bloody myself but it sure did hurt.

Funny thing is I look at most of my lifting as pretty basic and not near as complicated or thought out as many on here. I see lifts/moves on here all the time and have no idea what they are. I think you’ll also find a lot of us calling the same exercises by different names.

The different name thing has been happening but I am so new this this game that I did need to lookup the lifts in your last workout. I have literally never done or been interested in lifting before last October. It’s going to be quite the trip…

It will come Sol. Consistancy is the key to this game. Just keep at it and track it so you know what is working for you and what isn’t. Just have a plan, determine your weak link, attack that, find the next one, rinse, lather, repeat! remember to have fun with it!

Well put hel. I have rediscovered the point you make and Colin’s of "rinse, lather, repeat. It took a 23 year layoff to understand this line of thinking and perspective.

Now If I can grow up to be you guys…

The other day I taunted Soldog and DZ with our beautiful weather down here. My vanity angered the weather gods. We are under severe weather warnings. For my penance I will refrain from staring at the figure competitors for a period of… damn, looked.
Anyway, it’s Friday night and I wll get to the gym. What’s a little water, I love to swim.

Great stuff hel. If I could bench 375 I’d sport wood for a week. Even without my peter pills. The best to ya.

Spend most of the day at home today which is rare for me. Weather still sucks and I had to move a bunch of furniture around cause they start on that breakfast nook I’ve always dreamed about on Monday. Had the TV on during most of the day so I’ve probably seen more today then I usually see in months. I really hate to break it to yawl but we’re wasting our time. Things I’ve learned today…
-Throw out all your fancy eatin plans. You just have your meals shipped to you and in no time you’ll lose as much weight as you want and be all buffed up, too.
-Quit your gym and throw out your weights. As little as 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week with a boflex(?) and you’ll be damn near in Olympia shape.
-Women on their period are compulsive swimmers, joggers, and bike riders.
-You can now pre-plan hard-ons up to 36 hours ahead. But if that sucker lasts 4 hours and 1 sec you best get to an emergency room. "911, I’ve got a 4 hour hard-on!!

  • Lot of people have bathtubs out in the middle of their fields and this is where they plan the husbands next,up to 36 hour away, hopefully less than 4 hour, hard-on.
-If I dye my hair so many woman will want me my hard-ons will be booked solid for the next 36 months.
  • There’s a pill I can take and sleep straight through for 8 hours. Then I’d only have 24 hours to use my you know what.
  • If I drink some fiber drink and crap regularly I’ll become a really interesting person, take up bike riding, hiking, mountain climbing and still have enough energy to take the wife dancing.
  • Only young, tight, sexy women wear underwear. Older, heavier, apparantly pantiless ones, sit at the kitchen table talking to their husbands about insurance

Well, having learned all this I’m gonna need a little time to re-think my workout, sex life, and bathroom routines. Have a good weekend. I’m off to my backyard bathtub. It’s right next to my throwing area.

Priceless!!!

Hel - we cut off our satellite TV a year ago for just this…

Movies and Internet - “That’s the ticket, Doc!”

What a Sunday morning laugh! After a 5 a.m. Sunday morning session in the weight room, laughing hurts. I’m sure glad I checked the thread this morning!!

Saw this thread this morning for the first time and got a big kick out of it. I recently entered my fist track meet in 39 years, having competed in a bunch of field events, mainly the throws, in HS and college. Had been meaning to get back into masters’ T & F for years but, with work-related travel, never got around to it (you know - “the round tuit”). Anyway, discovered my local county’s senior games a week before, signed up for the 60-64 age group, but had no time to practice anything. I nearly chickened out due to a bad back and hamstrings I’ve been struggling with several weeks.

Last weekend were the field events. I entered 10 events and managed to win 9 medals: gold in the shot, javelin and high jump (hadn’t high jumped in 44 years), and silver in the long jump, pole vault, hammer, 25 and 35-lb wt throw and weight pentahalon. Finished dead last in the discus; had to throw without a spin so as to keep from fouling.

Needless to say, I was hurting most of last week. The track events were yesterday. Competed in the 100M dash after pulling one side of my groin warming up. Ran anyway and managed to pull the other side of my groin as well. Came in 2nd but there were only two of us in our age group (LOL). I wouldn’t have had a chance of beating the guy who won, even without the groin pull. Sitting here now typing this with an ice pack on my groin.

Injuries and all, the bug has now bitten me and I’m going to start practicing and competing on a regular basis. It’s tough finding a place to practice where I live on the FL Gulf coast on the beach and don’t have a yard or abandoned lots anywhere close by. They lock up just about all of the local high school facilities and people don’t like it if you throw implements on the beach. The heavy work travel schedule doesn’t help either. I’d like to compete in the decathalon, but there are very limited senior games anywhere that offer that event - guess it’s a liability issue with the old folks trying to pole vault - can’t say I blame them.

Anyway, I’d be interested in hearing about your progress and meet plans. Incidentally, there’s a big annual highland games competition locally that’s happening next week in Dunedin, FL. If any of you guys are competing let me know and I’ll cheer you on - you’ll know me - I’ll be the guy on the sidelines with the ice pack is his pants.
