Damn, I’m ready for some NFL …

How about rugby? NFL is for pussies! lol

I’m going to take a wild guess and assume you’ve never played American football… the real shit, not throwing a ball around in your backyard.

How can you compare tackling someone while covered in plastic and foam pads to a game where you have no protective gear besides a mouth guard?[/quote]

OK, if rugby players are sooooo much more badass than NFL players, how come I have yet to hear of even one rugby player coming over to the U.S., becoming a star player on an NFL team and making millions at something that, apparently is much easier?

I don’t really follow sports, so maybe it has happened, I’d just really like to know why someone wouldn’t rather make a shitload of money while wearing “protective gear”, than getting their head split open and nose smashed making (I’m assuming) less.

Hey man, American beer has NOTHING on European beer :stuck_out_tongue: Have you ever been to Belgium or Germany? The best beer in the world matey…and are you saying European people are less free than Americans???

With regards to the shaved armpits thing…european girls do shave. I think a few mediterranean women don’t however.

And i’m not even gonna go there with guns

Actually European beer has nothing on Australian beer but we could argue that until the cows come home, and yes I am absolutely saying that Europeans are less free than Americans. And that’s pathetic because Americans aren’t all that free. Ask a Brit who not only isn’t allowed to carry a gun, but also can be jailed for carying a pocketknife. Ask a muslim in Paris who is denied their right to wear a stupid Burkha in school. Ask a German who is required to inform the gov’t when they move for more than two weeks or the cops show up at their door looking for them.

And I aboslutely will go there with the gun thing. A gov’t that denies your right to self defense, denies your most basic right of self preservation, your very right to exist.

Hey no worries mate…im not gonna argue with you on a topic i don’t have any particularly strong or knowlegeable opinions on. HOWEVER…Australian beer??? I am prepared to argue until the cows come home! :-)I just spent the last 10 months in Australia and the only good thing about the beer over there is that they serve it well. Nice and cold.

Their beer is all about quenching the thirst. Flavour wise it has NOTHING on European beer. And i tried almost everything man. Carlton Cold (average), carlton draught (good), VB (shit), Tooheys New (shit), Tooheys Extra Dry (shitter), Red Back (not bad), James Boags (terrible), Boags St George (dishwasher liquid), Cascade (good stuff), Hahn Pemium (ok), Hahn Light (surprisingly good), Fosters (average), XXXX (average), Coopers Sparkling (Average), Coopers Pale Ale (average). Give me Leffe, Stella, Hoegaareden, Lowenvbrau, Erdinger (the list goes on) any day.

By the way im am not an alcoholic.

I think it would be fairly difficult for one to cross over from either rugby to american football or vice versa, paticularly if you assume that they play at a high level of either sport. There is not, in my mind a great many skills that can be transferred one to the other, particularly when one has been honing the skills of their particular sport for the majority of their life. The larger logical and tactical considerations involved in the games are also quite incongruent, so any “intellignce” or “instinct” for the game that a player would develop would likely have little carryover either.

The american football - rugby pissing match comes up here every now and again even though it is really difficult to compare the two in my mind.

As to your original question I would have to say if one is truely motivated solely by money they would be wise not to switch from rugby (assuming they compete professionally) to american football as although the average annual salary of an american footbally player may be higher, the average term of one’s career is much shorter. In north america there is the NFL (and I suppose you could include the CFL) and that is about it, whereas in europe and australia and new zealand (my knowledge does not extend beyond those areas of the world) there are various levels of professional play and, therefore (barring injury, etc.) the oportunity to have a longer career. Similarly, with more opportunities to play professionally at some level the probability of playing professionally at some level and being afforded the chance to move up are better (think in terms of baseball and farm leagues and independent professional leagues here in the us).

We weren’t arguing about which one takes more skill (a fruitless argument that’s impossible to resolve), we were arguing about which one makes you a pussy.

Rrrright… That’s why I asked what I asked. I never mentioned skill, I asked if someone is supposedly so much tougher without a helmet, shoulder pads, etc., then shouldn’t they be virtually unstoppable if they did wear this gear? That, to me, is the put-up-or-shut-up challenge to those who think rugby players are so much more tough.

I can only speak for football, as I’ve never played rugby, but it is definitely no joke toughness-wise. In fact, that easy sport we play with all of that padding on gave me a lifetime gift that keeps on giving (pain, that is); a deformed lumbar vertebra.

I’d agree that the NBA has become unentertaining to watch. Gone are the days of actual “teams”. Now all that’s left is 10 egos on the court competing for who can make the most highlight reels.

I’m also one of those people who are kind of glad in a way that the last couple olympic teams have done so “poorly” (since they are expected to simply roll over any and all competition). This illustrates that the game is being ruined. Basketball is a team sport, and yet the NBA encourages it’s players to insert a great big “I” right smack in the middle of the word team.

What really angers me is when these teams are reffered to as “Dream Team (insert number)”. There was only one “Dream Team” and it was only a dream team because even though every one of it’s members was a future hall of famer, they all knew how to play as a team.

Good training,

So true.

This pissing contest between Rugby and football fans crops up every so often on this site. However, I don’t really understand how anyone can make an arguement for either Rugby or Football without having played both. If you haven’t, then what is your grounds for comparison? Having played both, I would say they both are tough. Personally, I find Rugby much more enjoyable to play.
