So I had an argument with a buddy of mine about liking teams that aren’t ever going to win a championship. We were discussing soccer and how I liked a team in the English Premier League that is not a big club like Manchester United, Arsenal, etc. He was saying that there’s no point to like a team who has a very slim chance to win one. He said that you should only like the top teams who win. He then went on to say that people have to like a team from where they live or maybe where they were born.
I like teams out of my state and for various reasons. I like the Steelers, Vikings, Golden Gophers, etc. I haven’t heard something so ridiculous in a long time. Every team has fans and those fans like those teams for different reasons. Does anyone agree with my friend? I told him he sounded ignorant and honestly he started to piss me off.
I like the idea that a fan roots for their hometown team. You live there or grew up there, support them! It’s like rooting for a college university that you didn’t go to. Be proud of where you went to. I live in San Diego and no team here has ever won a championship unless you call the AFL a legit championship. I will root for them as long as they are based in this city even if they suck. I don’t like the idea of a person picking a team to root for because they are good. That is a typical bandwagon fan.
around these parts regarding Football (soccer) “true” football fans tend to support their home town team, or the team their Father supported or for some historical, cultural, geographical reason.
fans who support successful teams because they are successful are termed “glory hunters” and looked down upon by the “true” fans

Someone who likes a team only because they are successful isn’t a fan of any team, just a fan of a winner, a bandwagoner. He roots for who he things is going to win, vs. following a team through wins, losses, ups and downs like a real fan. That’s how a lot of people who don’t really follow sports are. May as well celebrate regardless lol.
I don’t think it matters which club you support, or which team you root for. If it’s a team from where you grew up, great. But maybe you moved around a lot, and don’t have a “home” team. Or maybe your grandfather is from Liverpool, and that’s why you support them (like me). I think what IS important is the loyalty you show to your chosen team.
If your team has NO chance of winning a championship (much like the Miami Dolphins of recent history), then you should still support them to the fullest extent. I agree with Severiano and Diddy, and I am anti-bandwagon/glory boys. Stefan, tell your “buddy” that’s it’s your prerogative to support any team you want, regardless of whether or not they are able to win a championship.
What I can never understand is why someone would support a ‘team’ which is owned by an individual or corporation. Where’s the emotional tie-in? I can get to vote for the president of my club…may death come swiftly to her enemies.
I wouldn’t die for my football team, but I would be willing to risk an extended coma. Sure we haven’t won the big one since 1980, but I have a good feeling about next year!
Eat em alive Tigers!
I knew a guy who barracked for the Swans all his life. He died without ever seeing them win the Premiership. The very next year the Swannies broke the drought after 72 years! I shed a tear to think of poor Smithy. Go Bloods.
As a Cleveland fan, i am expert in this area with well over 10+ hours supporting hopeless sports teams. The only logical reason i have for supporting these teams is that i grew up going to all the games, and im not a front running douche who’s going to flip flop. There is usually another team that i’d like to see win and will watch during the playoffs.
bandwagon sports fans are some of the worst people to be around.
Arizona Cardinals fan. the only one I know of in this area.
who is their equivalent in the Premier League? probably no one as they would be cycled out.
some friends TOLD me I am a fan of Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. go Wolves
Go Aston Villa! I like them because they have a guy on their team and when the announcer says his name in fifa it sounds like he is saying IBUMMEDAWHORE! I like Canadian hockey teams and American teams that Canadians made great like colorado, other than that I root for teams that are of close proximity. Hence why I like the jets they are not the closest team to where I live but the bills are reserved for toronto dicks.
You like who you like and he can like who he likes. There’s something to be said for the integrity of rooting for the underdog. That and if your unsuccessful team wins a championship it’s absolutely glorious.
Oh good grief.

Have to agree, this was where you went wrong. [/quote]
I strongly disagree with you, you are wrong.
ot: If you are a fan, and always have been a fan of a team with a huge winning tradition like MU, then I could see how it would be difficult looking at teams like ‘Newcastle’ and seeing anything of worth. You only know winning, why in the world would you ever commit yourself to a ‘losing tradition’ ?
You probably wouldn’t, so I understand your friend, as he mimics a majority of fans in this world. However, myself I’m a huge fan of talent. I absolute loath people who scream for their own QB, but hate on P.Manning. It’s just a clear sign of ignorance, in my humble opinion.
It’s one thing to bad-mouth a team in the midst of a upcoming-game-week(friend rivalry etc), but it’s pretty stupid to overlook or not even acknowledge greatness.
I mean, did anyone see Suarez hattrick this weekend? He might be a biter, but holy shit, is he talented!
Oh good grief.

If you are not from the US then you can talk soccer all you want.
You can start a thread about soccer and talk about all the flopping and tied games in that thread.
However do not include real sports like Football, Basketball, Baseball and Hockey with Soccer.
That is for foreign guys with no money for a real sport and I guess Hipsters in the northwest who have to be “different” for the sake of being different.
It’s nice to have a winning team to cheer for, but sometimes it just isn’t happening. Like with the Steelers. They’re just sucking this year. Next year or maybe in a couple more they’ll do O.K. again.
