Thigo Alves Misses by 4 Pounds

WTF

what a dissapointment.
I was actually looking forward to this fight
Now, not so much.
Its just rude not to make weight.

No excuse for that. Hughes, to his credit, didn’t let it bother him and agreed to fight at a catch weight of 174.

Alves will be in the dog house for this.

He missed by 4 pounds in an opportunity to fight Hughes? Now I bet they’re going to test him for roids like they did one of the other guys who missed (help me ought here).

I dont think there is any testing body in England.
MMa is still kind of on its own in the UK…

Thiago had gotten popped for a diuretic which is also a masking agent.
but that was a year or so ago.

Lazy bum should of made himself country breakfasts instead of the crap he usually eats.

Like you guys said there is no reason for it. You know how much you need to weigh and as a pro you should know how much water weight you can cut whether it is 5 lbs or 20 lbs. If you train properly for MMA you burn so many friggin calories a day I don’t know how they all don’t look like marathon runners.

unprofessional…yea…but imo when it comes down to it…its 4 fucking lbs big whoopie.

Not to single you out, but I don’t get comments like that. “Hughes, to his credit.” Why?

On fight night, Hughes will weight as much or more than Alves. He just has the science and art of cutting weight down. So Alves is NOT going to have a weight advantage.

This isn’t like when Clementi (walks at 170, maybe) agreed to fight Johnson (walks at 200), even though Johnson missed weight. Hell, even Clementing agreeing to fight Johnson (if he had made weight) was to his credit, since Johnson is a big dude. Here, Hughes and Alves are the same size. Hughes isn’t giving up anything.

Oh, and like Hughes is just going to say, “Hey, I’ll give up a huge fighter’s purse, PPV bonus, and not fight because this guy doesn’t know how to cut weight?”

So I don’t get people going all goo-goo for Hughes because he agreed to a) not forfeit a huge purse and bonuses, and b) agreed to fight someone who weighs as much or less than he does.

Yeah, that’s my thought.

Both Hughes and Alves are walking around at 185 or so. No one is giving up a size advantage. Weigh 'em both before stepping into the cage, and I’ll bet there won’t even be a 4 pound weight difference.

Hughes is just a master weight cutter. He even uses IVs. Has it down to a science.

In today’s world where everyone cuts weight, it’s just dumb not to know exactly how much weight you can cut and to know exactly what you need to do to cut it.

I agree on the surface of things that it is ‘just’ four lbs, but Hughes actually had to go through the effort and perfect his timing in order to make weight. Alves, on the other hand, just showed up overweight and gets to fight anyways. Even if he wins it’ll be a tainted victory in many people’s views, mine included.

Weight-cutting is a talent just like any other, and not making weight is unforgivable. You’ve agreed to fight at a certain weight, yet you show up over…I can’t be blase about the situation.

That’s what I’m trying to say.

And, I was also trying to point out that Hughes, unlike some fighters, didn’t make a big stink about his opponent missing weight, because as CA. Law said, he’ll be around 185 or so tomorrow and it won’t matter then. Still, some guys seeing their opponent miss weight can throw them off…

Alves looked a lot bigger in the fight to me.

yea he looked huge which is why im not fighting 170 lol everyone’s REALLY 190-200lbs

They should have went the EliteXC route and given Hughes some of Alves’ purse. Money is a strong motivator.

ditto - much bigger!

This wasn’t good for Hughes, he is done once he falls to Serra

Haha for real. If he ever gets tired of kicking ass he could have a future in bodybuilding.

Thiago Alves should ask Ricky Hatton how he loses weight. Hatton, when not training for a fight, gets up to 180-185 then fights at 140-147. This is both amazing and stupid at the same time.
