catchweight (apparently it’s a new co-ed weight class)

Yer he didnt even make weight

in his interviews, his excuse was a badly sprained ankle days out hence limiting his training and losing the last 4 pounds. Also why he had it heavily taped up.

Dunno… possible.

Possible I suppose, but things happen. Whatever. At any rate, he’s a very talented fighter and I look forward to watching him take on the top welterweights.

Yeah, that excuse just doesn’t wash. You can hop on the bike or some other machine to drop the weight. But, still, congrats to Alves for beating Hughes. He’s an exciting fighter to watch.

And he’s a Welterweight-170#

Which was why he was unable to leap and make that flying knee and put plenty of pressure on it otherwise.

He is only 5’9 so he looks bigger than he is. I think he would get out-muscled by both Fitch and GSP any day of the week.

Edit: Looked it up and he is 5’8. I remember after he lost to Spencer Fischer (a very small welterweight that now fights and lightweight) and Jon Fitch (6 ft tall, big strong wrestler) there was talk that Alves might move down to 155. Yes, he carries some extra bulk and maybe he did a few cycles of something to add muscle, but with his frame he is actually at a size and strength disadvantage to some of the bigger fighters at 170.

I wonder what he was walking around at come fight time, because he dwarfed Hughes who many have said is one of the best welterweights at cutting weight (and I guess I have to agree that up until GSP came of age and Alves knocked him out, that he was the best welterweight ever.)

Yeah, he is shorter than Fitch and GSP, but he came in four lbs over the limit. He didn’t really get outmuscled by Fitch in their fight, but he’s even bigger now. I suspect GSP would have the strength advantage if they were to fight, however.

I personally would like to see Alves fight Koschek.

Trust me. He’s much bigger. I’m 5’10 and only looked like that when i was 180-185 and i carried quite a bit more water/fat at that time.

Damn. I’m 5’ 8", 190, don’t look near that.

Whatever he’s doing, he’s apparently doing it well.

Just because you don’t look like him at a higher weight doesn’t mean a whole lot. Look at high-level wrestlers… they usually look 30 pounds heavier than the weight they wrestle at. Whatever Alves weighed, I don’t think that was the deciding factor. Strength matters, but technique and cardio will always be king in MMA.

Does sarcasm really come across that badly on the internet?

You don’t think the strength and size advantage Alves was playing with helped him stop Hughes’ takedown attempts?

I met Alves when after his fight against Karo. He was pretty thick and looked huge compared to all the 155’ers that were fighting that night.

Even compared to Karo (who carries a lot of weight on him) Alves looked a lot bigger.

BJ Penn has the best TD defense I have ever seen, and he is (despite what you may have heard or think) not very physically strong. He has amazing technique, and when someone has great technique they feel much stronger than they are on the mat.

This is something you experience early on if you have every done a grappling sport. Alves did stop a few takedowns, but it’s not like Hughes has been taking everyone down recently. He couldn’t take BJ or GSP down, and he had way too much trouble against Chris Lytle IMHO, a guy he should have destroyed and finished.

Hughes DID take Alves down, and did absolutely nothing to hurt him. If you are going to fight a great striker, you have to hurt him when it hits the mat because they can knock you out at any time standing.

during the fight it was mentioned he weighs well over middleweight limit and hughes used to walk around at 190lb according to the comintator on 1 of his old fights (cant remember which one) though doubt hughes does now

I’m pretty sure alves is like 190, and that’s at a low bodyfat too…

I understand, but for someone with a similar build to be nearly the same weight says a lot about how thick he is REALLY.

Right and they practice similar weight cutting practices. Dude is just big as hell period. He’s easily nearly 200lbs.

I agree. But he’s still fucking huge. Though that has its disadvantages.
