Thibs New Training Questions #4

This isn’t specifically direct at Christian, so feel free to chime in if you can help.

I haven’t been reading T-Nation as regularly as I used to, and was wondering where I would find a summary of Christian’s current training philosophy. I’ve noticed that there is a lot of talk about HP Mass and the methods involved.

Would be very interested to read more. Is most of the info tucked away in threads in this forum, or are there articles I should read too?

Thanks.

CT, when is the optimal time to begin consuming liquid nutrition around a workout inorder to ensure that most of the nutrients are used as fuel or shuttled to the muscles? How many grams of carbs (such as those in Surge Workout Fuel) are needed inorder to produce the proper insulin response before we begin our workout?

I just realised I’ve read the articles in the Look like a bodybuilder, perform like an athlete series, and this covers a lot, if not all the info, so what I’m getting at, is are there any threads I should be reading on top of this?

Thanks

Christian, what do you recommand people who don’t have a sledgehammer (I have one but it has one-arm handle) when throwing in some staggered forearm work in the upper body days?

CT,

In the Look Like a Bodybuilder article, you mention using a 2 week Ab blitz:

Just curious if you had any other recommendations to bring up lagging abs, i.e. particularly effective exercises. I am preparing for a bodybuilding contest in April 2012, and ab thickness is one of the areas I am lacking.[/quote]

You can find you answers here

Sorry, I just realized that I didn’t paste the URL…silly from me

CT,

I think it’s been mentioned a couple times before, but I can’t seem to find it. Any way you could list the different ramping methods again. I’m aware of the force spectrum/wave loading, double set, extended load, max rep down, and max force maintenance. Just looking for additional ideas to add volume to the hp mass program then the ones given.

how isnlt 72 sets at 80% - ish every 3 weeks plus eccentric-less work enough volume?

1.) maybe I recover quicker/better than say you or someone else and I need more.

2.) The question is about different methods to add volume. The program uses double set the 2nd week, and extended wave loading the third week. Those are only 2 methods and there are many more, if you understand the principles, it’s not hard to develop your own program. Some-days I feel in the zone and I’ll do an extended load, other days I’m not feeling it and I’ll do a max rep down set.

It just depends but once you get to week 5, you may want to do something different. Also, if I understand physiology well enough, as well as the principles, I believe the slight variation would better results than repeating the EXACT same routine. It’s still the same, just the amount of work you do at different spectrums change. I imagine CT wrote it the way he did for simplicity, and an easy for most to see the increase in volume.

What I like to do, is say you follow the program how it was laid out weeks 1-3, well weeks 4 on the 2nd workout I might do an extended load ramp instead of a double set. Week 5 I might go back to week 1 to help recover, or still add more, depends how you feel obviously. Then week 6 on the 2nd workout do a max force maintenance really pushing the limit seeing how many sets I can last. It just takes a little know how and practice, but if you have been following along and reading, it’s quite easy to understand.

I was merely looking for additional ideas, but I hope this answers your question.

CT, i am training 7 days a week, and hit every body part twice, now on the 7th day,i don’t know which body part i can hit 3 times a week. Which one of these can be worked out 3 times? Chest or back or delts or arms

Hello CT;

I have long arms and started training strongman and was wondering if you have any suggestion in regards to training my overhead pressing which is my weakness. Thanks for your help.

I’m about to start the HP Mass program once I test the 3RMs of all the movements that I’ll be involving but i was wondering if its a problem to use DBs on any of the pressing movements. I was thinking of doing either OHP or standing Pushpress for the overhead movement and then doing DB inclines and after BB Bench Press. I know it sounds kind of stupid but i like using dumbbells for incline press more than the bar but i know that dumbbells require more shoulder stability and coordination than using barbells.

Thanks for your time and wealth of information!

CT, in your skinny guy training livespill, when you added in the upper back and bicep work staggered in, can you give an example on how you set that up?

While i’m not as skinny as that guy, i’m still striving for building a good base and i find a pure lat/bicep day drains me and that i perform well and feel better after and during performance work. So, i had contemplated replacing the lat/bicep day with another performance day with lat/bicep work staggered in and a lot of sled work for the areas which i feel i respond well too.

I wonder what will CT use to get his strength going after he passes nebie gains period.

I understand that guy because I came form that level of strength and improved a lot but if CT manages to bring his strength up and better than mine (very unprobable the he’ll cach up with me and get even stronger, but life has tought me never to say never and never to back down) I will clearly have much to learn form that experience.

at least this one is simple, do more sets… do circuits… do more eccentric less work… do more sessions… just do more volume…

Christian, what core variables do you take into considiration when and if you add HIIT to a body-builder who is removing excess body fat.

Thanks

Coach if one is mainly looking to add size to the arms, is a specialization approach with concentrated loading 3 days or 2 days a row good for arm growth or is the other approach better letting them rest a few days and then hit them again?

About the week 5-8 part of your Get Jacked program, the setup is often something like this: 6 sets, 6/5/4/3/2/1 reps. This is well and good for most exercises, but how do you do a heavy single like that on the bent over row? I’ve never seen anyone do heavy singles on rowing exercises and I have a hard time imagining how to “pull it off” so to speak. Is it more of a Yates row that is intended?

Great template by the way, it’s rare for me to be losing fat while consuming this many calories.

Hey coach

I wondered if you could have a peek at my up-coming fat-loss/conditioning program

Mon - Friday AM 45-mins to an hour treadmill walking (ala - Lonnie L style with MAG-10)

Mon PM - Upper performance + staggered traps/rhombs/rear delts)
Tuesday PM - Metabolic circuits (carries/TRX/throws etc) + sled work (should I stick to whole body eccentric-less or upper to help me recover from Mon?)
Wed PM - Lower body + 1 press
Thursday (Pulse fast) AM - NC workout
Friday PM - Lats + biceps
Saturday AM - Metabolic circuits (carries/TRX/throws etc) + sled work (should I stick to whole body eccentric-less or Lower?)
Sunday - NC or off

Any thoughts from CT or any of you guys?
Thanks in advance

Hey CT,

I just had a couple question:

1.) In your neural charge videos, I have seen you wear the VS Dynamo Olympic lifting shoes. I actually own a pair myself, bought 4 weeks ago. I used to do squats in Vibrams before, get around 295x5. However, since using the olympic shoes, my squat has dropped to about 265x3. Is this something you have seen before or normal when switching to Olympic Shoes?

2.) Secondly, the HP Mass has been going very well for me. I’ve been very happy with my progress in my body shape for past few years, however I’ve always lacked chest size and shape. On the end of Push days, would it be smart to add a circuit of flyes? Or is this too much load on CNS?

Thanks for all the great information you put out here, learning so much from you.
