At 6’1" and 5’11" of pure muscle and awesome firepower, I would say Venus and Serena would qualify as “T-Vixens”, wouldn’t ya’ say? And forget all that crap about them being all power and no skill. Are you KIDDIN’ me???!!!
Only one criticism. Serena. Baby got WAY too much back for that “Cat Suit”! (LOL!)
What I love about Women’s Tennis right now? There isn’t just ONE woman (Martina) that has awesome muscularity. Look at Jennifer Capriati. The chick’s got some serious arm developement. As for the William sisters? Whoa, yeah. But, they’ve got to have that muscle. Especially when their serves are like, 120mph?! And some of the men are serving 125mph. Wild.
Gotta love where women athletes are right now. Yup.
I agree on the last Serena thought. I would, however, completely disagree with the assertion that they’re T-Vixens. I’ve seen an excerpt of their training program; it’s not much to stare in awe at. Basically, a bunch of medicine ball work and swiss ball stuff is all they do for weight training (from what I saw, at least). Granted, these two implements have their place in tennis training programs, but they should only be a part of an overall program. I’ve found that the single most important thing in determining success is how much time one spends on the court. Serving hard, like hitting a golf ball, actually has more to do with technique and leverage than maximal strength. Look at Andy Roddick; the kid is about 140 lbs., yet he’s been clocked in the mid-140s. Most of the biggest servers are tall: Rusedski, Ivanisevic, Roddick, Rosset. Then, you look at a guy like Chang, who’s built like a rock (in his lower body, at least), and he’d be lucky to hit 115. Compare a guy like Roddick to me (all-state back in high school) . I could easily outperform him in the weight room strengthwise, but in terms of experience, technique, and height (I’m only 5’8"), he’s got me beat easily. That’s why I’ve never topped 107, and he’s at a buck-fifty. Just some thoughts. How about my man Pete, though? Not too shabby for an old guy, huh?
Don’t know if they’re “on” or not, but I find myself agreeing 100% with zev. Serena’s butt, especially in that black satin thang, is definitely world-class. If she ever decides to retire from tennis, she has a great future in ass-posing.
First off, they are both great athletic talents, not to mention having unbelievable physiques (Serena’s mine, guys…I saw her first!!). I think that the idea of either of the two being on steroids is pretty ridiculous. If you look back at their physique development over the last 5 years or so, you’ll see that there are no huge increases in muscularity. Plus, I just don’t think that steroids would benefit tennis players that much (just like Eric said - it’s time on the court, and practice, practice, practice). That being said though, the juice monkeys in pro baseball might disagree.
There are lots of performance enhancing drugs besides steroids, many can’t be detected. I’m sure the top ranks of tennis use all kinds of stuff. I recall something about EPO use a while back. Of course Hemopure replaced that once they got a test for EPO. That Capriati chick looks like she’s on d-bol by the way. McEnro’s ex says he was using, but she’s trying to trash him for saying she was a lousy parent or something so who knows if she can be trusted.
For once I’ll agree with Nathan Say. I REALLY dont think they are no any gear. They are just two extremely talented athletes who have gotten to this level of competition because of hard work.
Gotta agree with Sewerhooker. The Williams’ were practically thrown onto a tennis court as soon as they could walk. They’ve trained HARD. They’ve got the talent. And the drive to succeed in this sport. I seriously doubt any use of any “gear” here. But this thought has never entered my mind.
I am in complete awe of Serena. Last year, she was ranked 8th-9th in the World (which is STILL an accomplishment) and blaming her losses to "stomach cramps", "being sick" - etc. She simply decided to she wanted to be the best in the world - and she set out to do it. And she has. And the greatest thing about these sisters is how they fully encourage each other. Both have such true competitive spirit and respect for each other. Very cool.
*shaking head in utter disbelief* yeah, they're on "gear".
No, no, no. I wasn’t suggesting they were on gear because of their PERFORMANCE or how dominant they are in the sport; I realize that’s much more a result of skill, practice, natural talent, etc. I think they’re on the gear because they’re F-ing HUGE. VERY few women, even professional athletes, are THAT big and muscular. I was noticing it from a bodybuilder’s perspective.
“Huge?” Not even, dude! Tall, well-conditioned, and weight-to-height-proportionate for world class athletes - yes. Steroids? Not likely. They happen to be tall women whose “figures” that have been athletically-enhanced through their life-long training efforts. Furthermore, they are are two gifted athletes whose physical attributes are no more or less remarkable than many women athletes today (check out women in track and field, basketball, volleyball, soccer, boxing, and even some of the other lesser-known tennis players, and I think you will quickly see this to be true), so the thought of them using steroids has never entered my mind (not that I care one way or another!).
Jennifer Capriati has muscular arms? Hmmm Patricia I don’t know about that one. They look a 'lil pudgy to me. She’s mega-talented and rather good-looking, but I don’t think she has a muscular physique at all.
How much does Serenna weigh? In the local paper it said she’s…5’8" and 130 lbs. I’m thinking what from the waist up. She has to weigh more like 180 lbs. or something. She’s a fucking panzer tank. As for roid use…I knew a black girl that was built close to her and she just played basketball.
Cardinal, many other professional athletes, ESPECIALLY track athletes, look the way they do because of – steroids. And like Nkeago said, they are HUGE. Not just big, HUUUUUGE. 130 my ass!
No one wanted to believe that baseball players were juicing either. Then the media brought it out. Then some still didn’t believe it. Then the players, or at least the retiring ones, started saying it was true. Now everyone talks about those “damned roid monkey baseball players”. Same thing will happen in tennis. This is the world of elite sports with millions of dollars and a place in history on the line. They use. You would too. Read the articles by Charlie Francis on this site to get the inside scoop. Hell, remember when the Chinese ping players were busted a few years ago?! World class sports (any sport!) = performance enhancing drug use. Don’t be in denial because of your hero worship.
jcbart: Hey, if you saw the pic I saw of Capriati while playing. You can easily see the delineation between tricep, bicep and delts. AND the mus-kels in her forearms.
And I really doubt Serena weighs 180lbs. C'mon guys, I know muscle weighs more than fat and I would say maybe she weighs 150lbs. But NOT 180. Has anyone thought to look up her stats on the net?
