See my answer above. Have you ever had a pet that died and you didn’t want to bury it in case it wasn’t dead, even though you know it was?
He had to have seen that the walkers were a major danger to his loved ones who weren’t infected.

The funny thing is, a farm raised veterinarian would likely realistically be the first one to make the choice to put them down. My father-in-law was a vet, and he loved animals but could put them down with zero emotional issues because he knew it was right. Herschel grew up doing some hard living on the farm and should have been the first one to cut the losses and get on with life.
We aren’t talking about animals. A farm-raised religious vet with no prior experience of reanimated dead bodies would not attempt to put humans down. He would default to religion.
And… another problem with those who believe in superstitious nonsense.

(Zombies are real though, don’t tell me otherwise.)
One person’s superstitious nonsense is another person’s piety. Wait for a real-life zombie outbreak and try to tell a Christian that they were wrong. They’re incorrigible.

I understand hope in the beginning, but these are rotting corpses!

I think they touch on this in WWZ. I remember one story of people trying to train the zombies like pets.

Denial.
There is no precedent for dead people walking around in the series. No Romero, no WWZ, only knee-jerk reactions.
I must have missed something. How do we know that there is no zombie pop culture in TWD universe?

I understand this behavior during the initial stages of the apocalypse. But, at this point, they are way past the initial stages. I don’t quite buy that Hershel and the gang have been completely sheltered.

Either way, when Shane shot that zombie multiple times in the abdomen and it kept coming, should be a huge wake-up call to Hershel.
Ct. Rockula wrote:
Zombies as weapons against other groups…

I think that would be awesome…

I’m sure they could be trained with shock collars
or how about cutting off their heads (brain still intact) and making one giant zombie head pit then throwing your enemies into said pit one at a time as the zombie heads just consume the person into indistinguishable dust and bits of flesh, taking each chunk from the zombie head above it like a game of plinko, except each peg on the way down is a zombie head and each chip dropped is flesh

It’s not about being sheltered; it’s about a clash of values. Herschel is trying to cling on to the last shreds of normality (and the walkers in the barn could been seen as a metaphor for a flock with Herschel as the shepherd).

Rick tolerated that as long as he could because he sees the importance of maintaining some semblance of normalcy (they are on a downward slope now that Rick and Shane have stopped wearing their uniforms), but Sophia was his responsibility and he dealt with it. Besides, our resident loose cannon snapped and broke the walkers out of a secure barn.

Corpses are walking, and they ain’t Jesus.

Hershal needs to get down with the new normal, or he is going to be among them.

They should feed him to the zombies. Then they can call him Herschel Walker (and you thought the undead were rotten)…

I’ll check those out. Thanks.

I read an excerpt of day by day armageddon last night and now I can’t wait till pay day, that and WWZ are the first things im going to buy

I just read an interesting tidbit on io9 that says one of the major male cast members was so mad at Darabont being fired that they asked out of their contract every day. Word is that the request was finally granted, so we will see a major character written out of the show.

True irony would be if the character was Rick, and he gets the treatement that Shane got in the books. I’m laying my money on it being Dale though.

Praying its the token black guy, so far has been the biggest bitch of the show.

Or Lori cause that bitch needs to eat a sammich or two.
