As a general point, why is Herschel’s behaviour considered crazy for believing there is a cure, when he hasn’t seen the ‘science’ behind the plague? Isn’t he just trying to quarantine the walkers?
Because they are dead.
The only cure would be for them to stop attacking the living and then bury/burn the bodies.

He doesn’t know they are dead. Rick and co have seen the process first-hand, Andrea put her own sister down.
^ I can see People doing this. People have a hard time thinking of loved ones being fucked up. No imagine you see them walking. Hell it’s really not that big of a leap to go nuts and hope they are still alive.
But that mass murder in front of the old guy may have pushed him into the warm Arms of “Fucking Nuts”

He’s crazy because they obviously have rotten flesh hanging off of their bodies. Even though he’s just a veterinarian, he should know that no person would be able to survive a septic wound like that for very long, much less months. He’s in denial and crippled by thinking the answer is in the Bible. The only zombie in there didn’t moan and bite people.
Which is why Rick, personally, had to put the girl down.
Had he not, or if Shane had done it, who would have believed him that he thought that it was the right thing to do?

I don’t know. I recently watched my father die. He was in a bad way the last few days. Had he gotten up and started gnawing on a raw chicken, I would put a bullet in his head.
Well, I might not do it right away (I’d probably get bit after trying to give him a hug), but after he started to decompose, I don’t think the decision would be all that difficult.

See borrek’s answer above.
How does he not know they are dead?
Serious denial.

See my answer above. Have you ever had a pet that died and you didn’t want to bury it in case it wasn’t dead, even though you know it was?

He had to have seen that the walkers were a major danger to his loved ones who weren’t infected.
The funny thing is, a farm raised veterinarian would likely realistically be the first one to make the choice to put them down. My father-in-law was a vet, and he loved animals but could put them down with zero emotional issues because he knew it was right. Herschel grew up doing some hard living on the farm and should have been the first one to cut the losses and get on with life.

Do you think he hasn’t witnessed an attack? If his family was in the barn I’m guessing he has seen what they can do…
Keeping that kind of danger around is nuts
I think that this is a world where you should throw out all your preconceptions. Summoning your pop-cultural knowledge on how someone should survive a zombie invasion is wrong. If you never heard of a zombie, how would you react if a corpse got up and walked around?

We aren’t talking about animals. A farm-raised religious vet with no prior experience of reanimated dead bodies would not attempt to put humans down. He would default to religion.

And… another problem with those who believe in superstitious nonsense.
(Zombies are real though, don’t tell me otherwise.)
