Welcome to the club, PP. Don’t try to preach about veg here, btw. You won’t convert anyone-though I realize you’re not trying to.
A big flaw I see in your diet is there is no fruit, and you’re eating way too few veggies. You should have at least 1 massive raw salad a day whether or not you’re a veg, and at least 1 more meal w/ veggies on top of that.
But, being in school myself (class 3x a week) with almost a 4 hr. daily commute, I can sympathize with it being hard to carry around veggies
If you are paranoid about fruit, add it to your diet slowly and see if there are any negative effects.
At the least dump in a ton of frozen blue- or strawberries into one of your shakes.
How about 1 meal of rice and beans or just beans?
Are you using rice protein or regular whey?
1 more thing: don’t go overboard on the soy if you plan to use soy products. I usually have no more than 1 serving a day-I think you know why. There are MANY days where I have no servings.
Sonny S no soy in my diet
Protein powder is whey.
I don’t usually eat fruit when I cut, but I eat tons (1-2lbs a day) when I bulk. I buy the big frozen bags of it at Costco. As for veggies, I eat about 2lbs a day! I get the big frozen bags of them at Costo (6lbs eat) and they last me about 3 days. I just throw them in a baking pan and cook them in the oven for a bit.
I’m not trying to preach about being veggie. I DO NOT THINK IT’S THE HEALTHIER WAY TO GO. When I was up in Phoenix this weekend I cooked for my friends, and guess what I cooked for them? Chicken and Salmon. I agree I would have better results if I did it another way, but this is what I do. I think people are better off eating meat but I compenstate as best as I can because I don’t feel right. I’m not trying to convert anyone to being a veggie, I’m just saying that when a vegetarian puts time, effort, and research into what they do, they can make progress.
Sonny, I was eating 2 cups of beans (before they were cooked) a day before, it’s just too much of a pain too cook them. Even when I would make 4 days worth at a time it would take 2 hours to cook them and I would usually eat them all before the 4 days was up. Not a good thing. The fruits not in there because I find I do better with the lower carbs, but as soon as I bulk they’ll be right back in there!
a 300 raw bench at 198 @ 20 yrs old is a preety good bench…most 20 yr olds i know in that weight class who are not very competitive powerlifters cant even bench 200 none the less 300…i have a 181 hs senior in my gym who is trying to break the usapl 181 pound class record for hs and it is 368 in a single ply shirt…so at 198 and with no real competitive training under his belt i would say that is damn good work reaching 300…keep it up…bm
Big Martin, I did Body Comp today because I remember you asked for the measurements: So here goes (I did the caliper readings myself so don’t consider them the most accurate)
Weight 192 after morning piss
Chest diagnol fold = 12mm
Umbiliculus vertical fold = 15mm
Leg vertical fold = 9mm
Body fat = 9.1% I HEAVILY doubt my body fat is that low though.
I’m determined to get my stomach back below 10mm. Once it’s down to 7 or 8mm I’ll start to bulk again.
Thanks for all the comments everyone.
OK, so you do eat a lot of veggies and fruit. Only thing I would suggest is to have at least one fresh vegetable meal a day. Usually a lettuce or spinach-based salad loaded with solid veggies like tomato, fennel, carrots, celery, maybe some cucumbers etc.
(I know its annoying to keep eating salad/spinach on a daily basis cuz they won’t last more than 2 days tops.)
Re the beans, I hear ya. What you can do is cook more than a lb at a time or keep some cans handy when the freshly cooked ones run out.
I’ll be learning some vegetarian cuisine in the future, this way I can have some yummy dishes like veg chili on a regular basis.
And re: the soy, don’t get paranoid about it. As usual, moderation is the key. I use veg “chicken” nuggets and soyburgers when I get the urge for meat, and no way do I freak out about possible side effects. I simply don’t eat much on a regular basis.
I also alternate betw soy and rice milk. I would go all rice milk but the only brand that tastes good is not available everywhere.
I have to say I’m Getting sick of Garden and Boca burgers. They all taste like dogshit no matter the flavor.
BUT I did find a great brand of the nuggets that taste awesome, so that’s a consolation.
Most people put down what are known as vegan diets. You get plenty of good protein from the eggs and protein powder(which I’m assuming is a dairy variety of some sort), so there is nothing wrong with your style of eating in most people’s eyes. The issues come up with vegan style diets because they usually lack good sources of animal protein, but you are getting plenty of these.
his bench is good, hell i benched
275lbs @ 155lbs end of high school 12th graded. give him kudos for goodwork.
you should see jack lalane in his early
40’s and still total vegie eater and he’s 89!
Ok, as for why I’m veggie:
I feel bad eating an animal. I ate meat until I was 12 and then quit. Trust me, I learned the consequences. While I stopped getting sick, I also stopped growing. I can say that I’m about the same height as I was then, shit, my penis is still probably the same size ;). I started getting stricter when I was 17 and at that point cut myself down from 190 to 160lbs over about 6 months. The end result, I got a six-pack, but I was TERRIBLY skinny, My bench had gone from being 240x1 rep at that period to 185x3 reps max (about 200lb max). It wasn’t worth it. Last year I tried experimenting around and keeping food logs seriously for awhile. I never really got skinny again, and until the last 4 months or so I’ve gone too low on caloric diets and never lasted long on them. This is the first time (at this forums advice) that I’m keeping my calories higher. The results so far are that my waist is not dropping anywhere near as fast but my strength is increasing as I cut, and I feel I can sustain this diet for my intended goal of 8 weeks.
As for taking the 1-ad I’m not exactly sure on how they make it…but even being veggie I have to accept that there are certain facets of life involving animals that are almost unavoidable. Try finding a good pair of workout shoes without some form of leather in them for one. I’m not vegan, I just do what I can, and it’s enough to appease me.
Sonny: I used to eat a lot of soy stuff, try veggie buffalo wings, those are awesome. The reason I don’t anymore…the same as with fruit when I cut…they trigger my appetite too much. This is the only diet I’ve found I’ve been able to sustain without going batty for food and breaking down and hitting a buffet for a cheat meal on Saturdays. So I’m doing what I can to the best of my ability. Nothing’s perfect.
ProteinPowde - nice work. definitely got some serious progress going on there!
My only thing is, and I’m not trying to start anything, is that most of the veggies that I know don’t eat any animal products. This includes seemingly just about everything. Since just about all ‘products’ have an animal product in it, one way or another. I see that you eat eggs and milk based products. Again, I’m not sure exactly the point here. However, those eggs were not produced willngly, and neither was the milk. Nor did the animals’ fate that produced those items end up any differently than the tenderloin I just ate this evening.
Again, I’m not trying to start any arguments with you. I certainly understand where you are coming from, not wanting to eat flesh. I certainly hold a good deal of respect for the food that I eat, even if this respect was not given during its life.
What I’m trying to say, is that I think your results would be much different if you relegated yourself to eating nothing but non-animal based products. Eggs and milk based proteins are wonderful sources.
Even the glucosamine I recently bought was obtained from bovine sources (fine print).
Ok to clear an issue up. The protein I use is whey. I very rarely touch soy. It’s your typical low-cost protein powder (whey concentrate and isolate), except it tastes amazing. This is really surprising because it’s the best tasting protein i’ve found, yet it’s the cheapest. I guess that comes with the buying power of Costco. It’s not in the same league as Grow, but it’s what I can afford, and based on strips I’ve put in my urine, it has what it claims. I don’t drink milk too often because it’s too high in lactose. I just don’t feel a need to eat meat anymore. I’m used to my current regime and happy enough with it. Maybe my results would be better, maybe eating meat would give me the extra edge. Then again though, I know the type of body I want, and this type of body goal can be accomplished without meat.
Jason
BrentM could you explain the contradiction in this statement?
What I’m trying to say, is that I think your results would be much different if you relegated yourself to eating nothing but non-animal based products. Eggs and milk based proteins are wonderful sources.
Eggs and milk protein don’t count as non-animal based.
Your comments imply that an accomplishment is not worth celebrating if there is some one in the world who can do better. Give the kid his moment – his PR in no
way detracts from what you have done. Congrats, Powda.
Cazzo also has 40lbs on me…and eats meat
Out of everything that’s going on, I’m still learning. Every one has a body that responds differently and I’m still fine tuning mine. Thanks everyone for the positive feedback thus far. I’ll post more pics after week 8. I think I even have the inspiration for the wedding I have to go to next week to not even eat that much while I’m there. I think I’ll keep some ephedrine in my pocket during it and load up on that along with some coffee at the wedding. Hell, I’ll be jacked, but the combo of that with warm beverages will keep me from eating too much. I don’t expect to see a six pack on me for atleast a year but a waist reduction would be very nice.
