Before mutilation - Completely stock 305 with 5 speed (B&W world class t5)

Get ready to replace that t5. I had a piece of shit '86 iroc z with a 305 auto. Lightly modded and severly beat to shit but a ton of fun. Got me into cars that corner. 140mph (according to the speedo) on the highway was fun too.

I’m going to an automatic. I have a th350 that is built like a brick that’s sitting under the car right now. I had to buy a conversion kit because the damn torque arm bolt’s to the transmission tail-housing. Pain in the ass but it’s in there now :-)
The other option would have been to get a torque arm with crossmember to take it off the tail housing. Probably cheaper the way you did it. Did you just have to get a new tail housing?

oh fun, a spool. chirp chirp chirp!
True man and for that reason, along with the 4.56 gears, I kind of regret putting that in. But hey, it’s all in the name of speed right?

Old cars and trucks are a fun hobby, but they sure can rape your bank account.

I’m working on a '81 Chevy Pickup, short wheel base. Yanked the stock 305 and dropped in a new 350. It’s supposed to turn out 330hp, but I popped in a bigger cam, new valve springs, rocker rollers and a 750 Holley. Put in a new 700R4 tranny.

Last week I dropped $2000 on what was supposed to be just a new differential. I wanted a new 3.73 rear end. Turned out I needed a new carrier too. So I upgraded to posi-traction which gets me a new carrier anyways. Then I saw the left axel shaft was tore up, so I upgraded them too. Then I had to replace the U-Joints. Now I suddenly have a brake leak on the right rear. And it just goes on and on and on.

On a lighter note my father and I dropped a 383 stroker into my brother’s '72 Chevelle. Sorta Christmas present.

Yeah, I took the cheaper route. I kept the tail-housing, just attached a bracket to 3 of the bolts and bought a new crossmember. The shitty thing is that I have the short tailhousing th350 and so now I have to get a custom driveshaft. If I would have gotten the longer one, it would have been fine. Oh well at this point what’s another 200 dollars.

That’s the reason I didn’t go with a previous plan. I have a 82 z28 body with 4.56 gears in it. Whats your RPM around 60? Just wondering.

A little over 5 grand. The thing got bad gas mileage before…I’m just guessing but it probably gets about 4 mile to the gallon now. I never drive it. :frowning: What’s your plan for the Z now?

I’m giving it to a friend who helped me build my 383. I bought it for 200 dollars. The springs have been chopped so it only sits about 2 inches off the ground. LOL

Here is my engine as it is today. I’ve been trying to get it started. It’s turning over very slow so a friend has his big battery on the charger and I bought a new coil and ground wire that I will put in too since we couldn’t get the distributor to arc a test plug before we cranked it. Hopefully I will get this sucker broken in today.

Good and bad news.

Good - We got my 383 running and it sounds great. A wire on the distributor plug was kinda screwy.

Bad - After only 10 minutes of breaking it in, the radiator blew and all the coolant ran out.

It’s always something isn’t it.

Got it set up and started back breaking it in. We got it to spin at 7,000 RPM!!!

Heres a short clip of us tuning it.
