The Small Block Chevy Thread

LT1 had the water pump placed over top the Opti spark (like a distributor). Water pumps were known to go bad, not a good idea.

About $1500 to fix.

changing the plugs was horrible a shop didn’t even want to do it. quoted me at aroune $1200 IIRC[/quote]

Ha that does sound like a good way to short the ignition. Plugs are a pain in the ass to change in the 3rd gen too because of all the emissions crap. Good thing I won’t be putting any of that back on

Found this pic.

Another hard day working on this thing. Just as much mental work as there is physical.

The chevy 305 is a severe POS compared to the Ford 302.

That said I have limited loyalty to either brand. I pick the part that is superior everytime.

My first car was a datsun 1980 280zx with a ford 302 swap.

Great car, I planned to put a chevy 5.7 in it eventually, but ended up totaling it, long story short, Ive never been more depressed in my life.

Had an 86 IROC that I put a 350 in with aluminum heads, 650 DP carb, etc etc. God I want that car back.

I just bought a 91 Stang 5.0, it’s nice, but I should have got another IROC.

Nice Mullet Camaro.

Man, people are giving those cars away on craigslist for pennies on the dollar.

I have always liked the v8 datsun z swap. Such a sweet setup.

I’ll agree the 302 is better than the 305 stock. 305 is a pos. The economy v8.

Ha my neighbor used to call mine the redneck mobile when it smoked and had shitty paint and interior. The one’s selling on craigslist for dirt cheap are v6 cars. Same as the mustang v6, cars are garbage IMO.

Jehova has an IROC though and he could prob have gotten anywhere from $5,000-$10,000 for it with that new paint job and engine swap. Hardly a “give away” price for a 20+ year old car.

I’m not saying they are bad cars because of the price they now command, but you can pick up a nice IROC for 3000 or so here in San Francisco Area. Compared to a nice Chevelle, they are a great bargain. Nobody wants one around here because smog checks make mods difficult.

Get ready to replace that t5. I had a piece of shit '86 iroc z with a 305 auto. Lightly modded and severly beat to shit but a ton of fun. Got me into cars that corner. 140mph (according to the speedo) on the highway was fun too.

They are insanely cheap to mod as well. Tires, shocks, sways, and some homemade control arms and panhard rod, and they will outhandle just about anything on the street.

If you up the power, get ready to replace the tranny and rear end.

I’m going to an automatic. I have a th350 that is built like a brick that’s sitting under the car right now. I had to buy a conversion kit because the damn torque arm bolt’s to the transmission tail-housing. Pain in the ass but it’s in there now

x2!

Also, what sucks about california is that you can’t replace an engine in a car with anything but a newer engine. Therefore an 89 iroc has to have an 89+ engine installed and that is more expensive than slaping togather a 72 350 and dropping it in.

Here are my projects:

71 Chevelle, 350 bored .60 over. 2.02 camel back heads, gear drive, 590 cam,…um…th350 with a 3500 stall…12 bolt rear with 4.56 gears and a full spool. This one just got painted and is pretty much done.

48 Plymouth special 2 door. This one’s got a 396 big block, camaro front sub frame with disc brakes, ford nine inch rear. Needs paint and interior.

My newest project is a 69 GMC, 350 small block with a 3 speed. Needs about everything.

My buddy in california ran a 408 fox mustang with glass packs, countless mods and his “interstate plates”

Basically theres a little motor that covers the rear plate.

His car wouldn’t pass smog if his life depended on it.

He bought a fake inspection sticker, and I doubt he can count how many times he ran from the cops in that car.

He only took it out for kicks at night, so its easier than youd think to get away.

Haha, living dangerously!! I hope they don’t ever require emissions test where I’m at.
